they called consumer reporter susan hogan and the nbc 4 response team. >> when a maryland couple gotgetting a refund from the manufacturer would be easy. not so much. >> there was nowhere for me to go. >> reporter: carol will never forget a recent scare. >> there was a shoulder and i had to drift off with no power steering, no nothing. the car just quit on me. >> reporter: the engine in her 2012 hyundai sonata with 6,300 miles on it failed. carol had the car towed to a dealership and was told the engine needed to be replaced at a cost of $6,000 because it was no longer under warranty. >> i said we'll just have the car towed home. >> but a mechanic friend of the family offered to replace the engine at a fraction of the cost. >> paid him $3,900 for it and it was running again. >> that was in july. less than two months later, look what arrived in the mail -- a recall notice. her engine, the very one that she just p was recalled. according to the recall notice, metal debris may have been generated from factory machining operations. federal safety regulators say this could cause possible
