susan mcginnis starts us off in washington this morning. good morning to you. happy thanksgiving. >> reporter: good morning. happy thanksgiving. this is a very tenuous cease-fire. deep mistrusts remain on both sides. it feels like both sides have their finger on the trigger. residents are gathering their belongings and heading home. many took refuge in a united nations shelter while israel and the militant group hamas spent eight days in a bloody conflict. under the cease-fire agreement hamas promises to stop firing rockets. israel says it will end air strikes and will ease border restrictions that have stifled gaza's economy for years. after a deal was reached the residents poured into the streets of gaza, cheers and celebratory gunshots replaced the sounds of gunfire. in tel aviv most israelis were happy to hear the news. >> i would like to believe that no fighting is always more good than fighting. >> reporter: egypt's new islamist government was the driving force behind the negotiations to end the conflict with diplomatic help from secretary of state hillar

susan mcginnis is live in washington with more. >> reporter: those changes kick in if no alternative deal is made. as of now, both sides are still talking about their willingness to compromise, but when it comes to that main issue, raising tax rates, both sides are digging in. democratic senator dick durbin will give what's being called a major speech laying out a case for a bipartisan fiscal deal. he's a member of the senate's gang of eight, four democrats and four republicans who have collaborated on ways to reduce the nation's debt for two and a half years. democratic senator mark warner is part of the gang and says democrats are willing to put entitlements like medicaid and medicare on the negotiating table. >> the math just doesn't work anymore. not because the programs are bad, but because thank goodness, we're living a lot longer. >> reporter: republicans are also signaling they're more open to compromise. many in the house are distancing themselves from a no-tax increase pledge they signed. they say they'll agree to raising tax revenue by limiting deductions for the wealthy.

susan mcginnis joins us now from washington to explain exactly what's happening today. susan, good morning. >> reporter: hi, good morning, frank. petraeus is here in the first of two hearings. he snuck into the first one without being seen by the press. lawmakers are already questioning him. they may be tempted it talk about the sex scandal but the focus is benghazi. they believe that petraeus has information about what happened there that no one else does. >>> reporter: former cia director david petraeus is headed to capitol hill this morning to talk about the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. congressional leaders say he has a unique insight into the attack. >> director petraeus went to tripoli and interviewed many of the people as i understand it that were involved. >> reporter: house and senate intelligence committee members spent thursday interviewing top military and intelligence officials. they were also shown a video taken from surveillance cameras from the consulate and from drones flying overhead. >> it does begin from when the incident --before the inc

cbs reporter susan mcginnis has more on the attacks and efforts to encourage a cease-fire. >>> reporter: bombs shook gaza city awake monday morning. the israeli air force targeted another 80 sites during overnight and morning bombing. the military says it targeted weapons storage facilities and police stations. hamas says israel is killing civilians. this sixth day of air strike follows an israeli offense on sunday leading to the deadliest day of attacks yesterday. at least 29 palestinians were killed including four children when a bomb hit this apartment building. israeli officials say hamas is using civilian buildings as cover to launch rockets across the border. in tel aviv, people on the street ran for cover when sirens signaled an approaching rocket. israel's iron dome defense system has intercepted more than 240 rockets. during a trip to asia, president obama warned israel about expanding into a ground war but he defended israel's fighting back. >> there's no country on earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders. >> reporter: u.n. secr

susan mcginnis is in washington with the latest. susan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the president is sending his top two negotiators to talk with lawmakers today about possible spending cuts. he's also getting ready to take his fiscal cliff message on the road. he'll try to convince the american people the best way to avoid the fiscal cliff is to extend the bush era tax cuts for the middle class. >> it's too important for washington to screw this up. >> reporter: president obama is putting pressure on congressional republicans and he's enlisting middle class americans in getting the gop to take action on taxes. >> when the american people speak loudly enough, lo and behold congress listens. >> reporter: tomorrow he'll host a campaign style event where he calls on lawmakers to extend the tax rates on families making less than $250,000 a year. once that's done they can work on other details such as spending cuts and changes to the tax code, medicare and medicaid. >> he's out there campaigning for his position. i get

susan mcginnis has more on the continuing violence. >>> reporter: mosques in gaza issued the call for morning prayers today even as bombs and missiles rained down around them. the israeli military says it hit about 100 terror sites overnight, including the islamic national bank in gaza city that israel says it used to fund terror operations. hamas militants have launched more than 1,000 rockets into israel during this week-long battle. palestinian officials say 38 more people were killed monday including women and children. israel says it's time to minimize civilian casualties. >> the problem is the terrorists are hiding these rocket launchers deep inside civilian areas in mosques and schools and people's homes, firing them at our civilians. it's very hard to get to this equipment, but it's necessary. >> reporter: president obama is sending secretary of state hillary clinton to israel to help with cease-fire negotiations. she will arrive today and meet with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu tomorrow. >> our bottom line is that a peaceful outcome has to include an end to rocket

susan mcginnis joins us from washington where lawmakers are now demanding answers. >> reporter: they are. hey, michelle. yeah, the list of questions including who knew what and why, why wasn't congress told sooner and was national security compromised? the sex scandal that brought down david petraeus and is now enveloping another top u.s. general moves to capitol hill today. house intelligence leaders will ask fbi deputy director sean joyce and acting cia director michael morrell about the events that led to david petraeus' resignation as head of the spy agency. petreaus left the job when news of an affair with his biographer paula broadwell became public. >> did you have any indication that -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: tampa social ice jill kelley initiated the fbi investigation that led to david petraeus's resignation after receiving threatening e-mails linked to broadwell. kelly is connected to another general. america's top commander in afghanistan, general john allen. the pentagon is looking at more than 20,000 documents and e- mails between allen and kelley which some have

cbs reporter susan mcginnis reports more work needs to be done if this truce is going to have staying power. >>> reporter: shops are re- opening and clean-up is under way in gaza. the city suffered massive damage during a bloody eight- day rocket war between israel and hamas. under the cease-fire agreement, hamas promises to stop firing rockets. israel says it will end air strikes and will ease border restrictions that have stifled gaza's economy for years. israeli troops that had been poised for a possible ground war pulled back this morning. in tel aviv, most israelis were also happy to hear the news. >> i would like to believe that not fighting will always do more good than fighting. but i'm very happy to hear that. >> reporter: egypt's new islamist government was the driving force behind the negotiations to end the conflict with diplomatic help from secretary of state hillary clinton. clinton spent two days shuttling between jerusalem, the west bank and cairo. >> people of this region deserve the chance to live free from fear and violence and today's agreement is a step in the rig

susan mcginnis has more on today's efforts to get democrats and republicans a little closer together. >>> reporter: president obama will begin a media blitz this week highlighting his efforts to steer clear of the "fiscal cliff." he will first meet with small business owners at the white house today. at the other end of pennsylvania avenue, fellow democrat senator dick durbin will give what's being called a major speech laying out a case for a bipartisan deal. durbin's a member of the senate's gang of 8, four democrats and four republicans who have collaborated on ways to reduce the nation's debt for 2 1/2 year. democratic senator mark warner is also in the gang and says democrats are willing to put entitlements like medicaid and medicare on the negotiating table. >> the math just doesn't work anymore not because the programs are bad but because thank goodness we're living a lot longer. >> reporter: republicans are also signalling they are more open to compromise. they say they will agree to raising tax revenue by limiting deductions for the wealthy. >> without compromising our princi

susan mcginnis is in washington with more. >> reporter: this is something congressional leaders have been calling for and now general petraeus will be here on capitol hill. his input is seen as critical regarding the attacks in benghazi and also he's expected to be asked about his affair and that fbi investigation. after calls by congressional leadership former cia director david petraeus will testify before congress tomorrow about the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. petraeus was scheduled to testify today before a house intelligence committee but those plans changed after he resigned following his admission of an affair with his biographer paula broadwell. bengazhi is at the center of another capitol hill battle. senate republicans say they will not accept the nomination of u.n. ambassador susan rice as a replacement for secretary of state hillary clinton. >> we'll do whatever is necessary to block the nomination. >> reporter: senators john mccain and lindsey graham said rice was either lying or incompetent when she made this statement five days after the attack. >> we don

susan mcginnis reports tonight investigators aren't sure what caused the fiery blast but the possible causes include a gas leak. >> reporter: the crews picked through the rubble of two homes leveled in an explosion in indianapolis. they're trying to determine what caused the powerful blast that killed two people and injured several others. >> the house probably felt like it moved a foot or so. and all we can do is get out of here. >> reporter: officials say the explosion damaged at least 80 homes and dozens are damaged enough that they may have to betorn down. the fiery blast around 11:00 saturday night left neighbors shocked. >> i was sitting here watching tv. the next thing you know a loud explosion, the whole house shook, things falling off of walls. >> reporter: 200 people were forced to evacuate while firefighters battled the flames that spread to other homes. this home is one of the homes that caught fire. people say they felt the blast as far as three miles away. >> the house felt like it was shaking. your chest was shaking. it just felt -- it's nothing that you've ever experie
