susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning, susan. >> good morning, anne-marie. this could be quite a rumble here on capitol hill. you have wayne lapierre head of the nra, gabby gifford's husband strong advocate and some of the strongest senators we've got all talking about one of the most devicive issues we face. emotions cou run high today when the husband of former congresswoman gabriel le giffords joins wayne lapierre. patrick lay hee called the hearing in response to the newton shooting where 20 children and six adults were killed. but lapierre doesn't believe the shooting should lead to new gun control laws. he plans to tell the committee law and gun owners will not september the senator dianne feinstein gets her turn to question lapierre at today's hearing. feinstein has been an outspoken critic of the nra. tuesday she told reporters they have fought virtually every kind of regulatioregulation. the time has come to changed course and make people safe. lapierre says the government shouldn't pass any new laws until the government start ts enforcing the laws

susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. the president is going lay out his own vision for immigration reform, but he is reportedly very encouraged by the senate plans. so he plans to support that plan and also call for quick action by congress. president obama had planned to push his vision for immigration reform at a speech in las vegas today. now the president will set his plan aside and endorse a plan unveiled monday by a bipartisan group of senators. >> this is a big deal. this is an important development. this is in keeping with the principles the president has been espousing for a long time. >> reporter: the group of eight senators, four democrats and four republicans, believe their plan could pass where others have failed. >> we believe this will be the year congress finally gets it done. >> reporter: the proposal provides a way for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the u.s. to become permanent citizens after steps have been taken to beef up border security. the president supports a quicker path to citiz

susan mcginnis tells us how the deal was reached. >> reporter: they had their dance. and taken a moment to savor the scene. now it's time to get back to work. in his inaugural speech, the president called on both parties, not to let politics get in the way of governing. >> we must act, knowing that our work will be unperfect, we must act knowing today's victories will be only partial. >> reporter: republicans are offering a compromise on the debt ceiling, house g.o.p. members are backing off a requirement to cut $1 of spending for every dollar the debt ceiling is raised, a move the president has demanded. >> it's believe it's a recognition of political reality. we realize the president won the election. >> republicans on capitol hill are not voting to raise the debt ceiling without getting something in return. they say in order to approve a higher debt limit, they want senate democrats to do something they have not done in four years, pass a budget. >> for us to have a debate about spending and debt we've got to have the focus be on a budget and what we're going to do
