susan medina, public information for the colorado department of investigation, is talking. >> he's had a lot on his plate today. he's spent the majority of it at the hospital with the family of one of the members of his agency that was in surgery for most of the afternoon and with the family of the other deputy who was transported to st. anthony's for treatment. he wanted to stay with that family, both families by their side throughout the entire afternoon. that was his priority and as we move forward through the day going to come back up the mountain. he's going to meet with his team here and do some other things to really take care of each other. so while he wanted to be here, he wanted me to express that, why he isn't, and also share his thoughts of thanks and great pride for this community. it's been a tremendous outpouring of support and truly love and we greatly appreciate, that especially the sheriff. so that's why fred isn't here. we're hoping the sheriff will make comments at some point. it won't be today won't be tonight, but we'll really stay with that piece. a news release

susan medina with the department of investigation says that the focus should be on the deputy who lost his life. >> he served his community in a superior way. he made the ultimate sacrifice today in his service to that community. as we go into the evening and we do things with our families, we ask that you keep the entire family in your thoughts and prayers. turn on your porch light and talk about nate carrigan . >> reporter: the sheriff here will eventually speak about nate carrigan. he definitely has some other things to take care of tonight. i got an email from a friend of nate carrigan and a graduate we have a glimpse into who he was. she said, it is hard to know what to say at a time like this. nathan was my friend and he is a legend. no matter who you talk to, everybody knows him and loves him. he had a heart of gold and an old soul. we will have more on 9news. i should tell you that park county is a small department of 58 deputies serving a large geographical area. there are smaller numbers of folks that live up here in the mountains. in comparison, the jefferson county sheriff
