for the united states, but compared to our six dozen best practice cities, it is nowhere near where it could go to be more sustainable. our goal is to bring the cars down to 30%, bring transit up to 30%, and bring in walking and bicycling to 40%. that is more in line with cities abroad in europe that are the same size as us geographically and density whys. they have met these goals. it is not out of left field. it is doable. but it takes a concerted policy changes to make this happen. what is our role within the transportation system? again, we tend to be labeled as muni, with a focus on transit. you can see these other modes that really need attention to make a complete transportation network work. some corridors work better with public transit. some work as bicycle corridors. some will never use -- will never work unless we get land use tools correct. transit is not a be all, and all for the city. in some quarters, it makes sense. others have a better value for other strategies. we are not paid enough attention to commercial vehicles. as we have better transit, more stores pop up. but they are entitled to delivery

san francisco was recently named the most sustainable city in north america after an extensive study by siemens. the area where the city was ranked first was in its commitment to zero waste. rec and park contributes to that effort by partnering with the department of environment. our department has improved management of waste and eliminated 50% of our dumpsters in the late marced area. with respect to our efforts of fostering community loyalty, rec and park hosted a number of city family events. we are up to fight even spurrier. we have annual free events in our parks. we took advantage of world cup madness and offered free women's world cup viewing. numerous other smaller community events. we provided 55,000 permits for a variety of events and free community space is provided to the public every week for meetings and other events. the department continues to work on its communications strategies. we've implemented a variety of social media tools to improve communication with the public, including a weekly e-newsletter, regular facebook and put your updates, and we've begun micro- b

cities like san francisco to create those jobs. the best jobs being created right now are in the clean technology and bio technology life sciences. those are so well paid for, and they have sustainability. especially when you keep the innovation spirit that we started here in san francisco. in addition to the technology jobs in tourism jobs in the city, i think the companies that want to move here want to make sure that they can sustain themselves with all of the incentives that local government and federal government can provide. i think the federal government is doing what the local governments are attempting to do, provide those incentives that were to create and sustain jobs, especially in these new industries or i think a lot of students and young kids are looking for the jobs. they want something that is sustainable. they also want to be attached to something that proves our environment. that is what i hear every day. high-school kids from public schools was something that will be proud of. associating themselves with a company like method will make them very proud. there will be good citizens as well, and they will be volunteers this saturday, i am sure. >> thank you. integration of diverse populations and affordability and quality of life issues in cities and regions and also -- and sustainabilityin which encompasses a broad range of things. it's primarily environmental sustainability. the overarching theme which i think is particularly pertinent here in the bay area is regional governance and cooperation where we try to emphasize move each of our cities that they really need to figure out in their broader economic region, not just within their city limits. so how do you coordinate with the communities around you to advance some of these policy issues, whether it's transportation, environmental improvements, economic development, education systems, workforce training, etc. these are some of the issues that we really want to publicize the best practices so that practitioners such as ourselves can bring these ideas back home and really move an issue forward. i think here in the bay area, bringing this group of four european experts here has really been an interesting exercise for me, not knowing the city of oakland very much at all, having been to san francisco a few times, but i
