bidwell got his first job working for john sutter at sutter's fort. he learned firsthand california's rich potential of an agricultural producer and as a place to raise livestock. erdserds of cattle and large wheatfields. and bidwell went to work for sutter and got some good whate-job training for would later become his own operation a few years later at rancho chico. 1846, when fremont and his small group of armed american explorers were moving up and down california, their presence in the state encouraged american settlers who were interested in separating from mexico, imitating the example of the texas rebellion of 1836, they, with fremont's encouragement, took action and seized the mexican garrison at sonoma, the northernmost mexican settlement. then, they raised the flag. bidwell did not participate in that revolt. he was still at sutter's fort but word arrived that the rubble had taken place and bidwell left sutter's fort and joined the rebels at sonoma and was active with that. from that point forward, the revolt was preempted when united state

redding, who is friends with sutter, finds out what is going on with the gold,area has the potential, and goes to clear creek with native people and discovers gold himself on what bar." known as "redding's but ag was here before gold. we tend to celebrate the mining history of the area and forget about the roots, which are agricultural. adding, one california became state, was still trying to make sure his rancho got register. but he had to register his cattle brand with the state of california. in 1850, well into the 20th century, that system for registering grantors to get this leather cow-shaped head and stamp the brand on it and fill out the back with information. we have redding's brand and others in here to talk about the history. there is a wonderful book of all registries, which is really great historical research. one of the things we discovered through doing this exhibition is something we knew from living here. this is really a livestock area. beef range cattle and cattle today. were beinge hides shipped back east to boston. they were very valuable at the time. this area un
