suzanne malveaux is on capitol hill. suzanne, what more do we know about the timeline? >> reporter: the negotiation between the new senate majority leader chuck schumer and senator mitch mcconnell, it was the biden administration as well as democrats that were seeking some time to push through some more of president biden's nominees for his cabinet. then it was mcconnell on the other side pushing for president trump and his legal team to have time to get their case in order. so both sides seem to be happy. and it does take off the plate, perhaps, a complaint that some of the moderate senators, republicans, were having, snort murkowski as well as john thune saying the president wouldn't have due process or fair process. but fred, make no mistake, the process will move forward starting on monday, when literally the house managers will physically walk over that article of impeachment for incitement of insurrection to the senate side. it will be introduced on the senate floor. and then the next day, you will have that summons issued to trump, followed by some critical deadl

suzanne malveaux is on capitol hill. suzanne, it's cnn's reporting that there is already it seems a strong push among democrats, support for another impeachment vote. is that what you're hearing? >> reporter: there is a lot of emotion, jim, there is a lot of frustration and there is a general sense here especially among democrats but also republicans that something has to be done. that the president has to pay in some form or fashion and that they are looking at vice president pence the 25th amendment invoking that and seeing that as less likely of an option here and something that congress has to essentially take charge of. so in about three hours or so you're going to see this conference call that's going to happen with the house democrats to discuss that very issue about the impeachment proceedings that is becoming more and more likely to happen here and this is not going to be the kind of thing that we saw in 2019 when we covered the first impeachment of president trump, but something that is much more truncated and

suzanne malveaux is on capitol hill. suzanne, what is the latest on this timeline? >> well, the house intelligence chair adam schiff who had prosecuted the december 2019 impeachment case against the president warning democrats to slow down. that if they take it too fast it may set a dangerous precedent. nevertheless, fred, the time table is lightning fast here. we're talking about one article of impeachment already drawn up for incitement of insurrection. what why expect is on monday the house rules committee will meet. they'll set out the ground rules for the debate. it will be a privileged resolution which essentially means the time table will be expedited. a two-day period in which they'll debate this article of impeachment and then could go for a vote before the house. it just requires a majority. the democrats are, of course, the -- more than the majority. so we'll see if they have those numbers. but it could move very quickly. the next stage of this is going to the senate. the senate side. that requires two-thirds for the conviction of the president to be remo

cnn's international correspondent suzanne malveaux is there. suzanne, not much time to get this done. >> reporter: not at all, it's on a fast track. there's an article of impeachment saying donald john trump for high crimes and misdemeanors. what we're going to see in days ahead, on monday, the house rules committee will meet and set up the terms of the debate and a privileged resolution that is offered. that means this is on a fast track, that they could debate this within two days or so. it would take a simple majority in the house. the democrats have that majority, to impeach the president. and that is something that is the sole duty of the house of representatives. what he is being charged with is the impeachment incitement of insurrection for his role in inciting the violence that occurred on wednesday against the u.s. capitol. and interfering with the u.s. election. now, speaker pelosi says they have many options on the table. they will use all of those options. the one thing they will not do is stand by and do nothing. that this presiden

let's bring in suzanne malveaux on capitol hill. good to see you. so kevin mccarthy, he is to meet with greene next week. what are the expectations of what that kind of conversation or potential punishments might be? >> reporter: fred, i think one person put it well. this is representative steve scalise. he is the gop whip and he essentially said that he has consistently condemned this kind of violent rhetoric against politicians on both sides. that is very likely what you're going to be hearing from mccarthy as well, on both sides, not necessarily specifically addressing greene's comments, but broadening it, if you will, and really being political in that fashion. we saw mccarthy, he was with the former president, president trump, at mar-a-lago. they both emerged with statements saying they're cooperating with each other, that they've got to bring the republicans back to power in the senate, as well as the house. trump saying that he's more popular now than ever and that his endorsement more important now than ever. and mccarthy framing it, if you

cnn's suzanne malveaux with more on details. what are you learning?> reporter: we're getting news of this. senator chuck schumer, new senate majority leader, essentially calling for the inspector general of the department of justice to launch an investigation into what happened between then president trump and a justice department attorney jeffrey clark. according to "the new york times" report that clark nearly convinced trump to fire his then attorney general jeffrey rosen. why? because rosen had refused to force georgia's state lawmakers to overturn the presidential election results out of their state and when justice department officials got wind of this plot of what they were trying allegedly to do, these justice department officials held a conference call and essentially agreed that if rosen goes, if he's fired, they're all going to go and all going to resign en masse. allegedly, rump gtrump got wind this and backed down on the plans. schumer now in this tweet is saying, unconscionable, a trump department leader with conspire subvert the people'

suzanne malveaux from capitol hill, what have we learned about this upcoming meeting or talk? >> reporter: what we've heard from my colleagues jamie gangel, that meeting has been canceled because there is a traveling conflict, they'll be traveling from houston back to d.c. from an energy event. at least one of those sources also says one of the reasons is that mccarthy is just not ready to discuss what the next steps are regarding congresswoman greene. and make no mistake, however, greene has aligned herself with mccarthy. they have both aligned themselves with the former president trump. we saw representative mccarthy last week at mar-a-lago. he came out with the former president saying that both of them vowed to bring republicans back to power in the senate as well as the house. it was trump that said that he had more popularity and more juice, if you will, in terms of endorsing a candidate. and it was mccarthy who said, he framed it as a fight against the democratic agenda which he called radical. so we are seeing kind of a comfort, if you will, as some of these lawmakers a

suzanne malveaux is on capitol hill for us.t are the chances enough republicans sign on to convict the former president? >> reporter: well, ana, as you know, the senate is split, 50 democrats, 50 republicans. they have to come up with a power-sharing negotiation agreement. behind the scenes they're trying to figure out rule to basically govern on the senate side. for the democrats and the biden administration, they want a lots done in the first is 00 days, covid relief, $1.9 trillion? stimulus, but also the cabinet nominees to be confirmed by the senate. republicans made it very clear they're not splilting the day, they're not splitting the purpose here with impeachment and legislation. they want it is all or nothing. so they took that to heart. just listen to senator lindsey graham. >> if up to impeach the president we're going to do it like we have always done. we're not going to split the day. that's the business of the senate once we go into it. they're choosing to do this, we're going to do it the way we've always done it.

suzanne malveaux on capitol hill. fill us in on what we're hearing from the congresswoman greene and other republicans today. >> reporter: it's a very public feud that spilled out via twitter and there's a time of reckoning and the republicans have to choose which side they're on, whether it is a pro trump party or if they would like to distance themselves from trump and essentially, congresswoman greene now has defactor kind of moved into that role, if you will, as somebody who is throwing the flames on the fire here in a twitter storm. so what we do know is that house leader kevin mccarthy, he had a visit with trump at mar-a-lago, just days ago. they both emerged saying they have to take back the house and the senate. the republicans do. and that trump saying he is now more popular than ever, that his endorsement more valuable than ever. mccarthy framing it in terms of rejecting the democratic agenda calling it a radical agenda, but simply wrapping himself into trump's praise and affection, if you will. that is the

will meet with the georgia congresswoman known for spreading conspiracy theories, let's bring in suzanne malveaux, what are the expectations. >> reporter: congresswoman greene this morning seems quite emboldened by a very supportive call from the president. she seems as if in this twitter thread that she has conducted throughout the morning that she is full of fight and she's not backing down. this is just a few of the tweets. she says that i had a great call with my all-time favorite potus, president of the united states, president trump, i'm so grateful for his support and more importantly the people of the country are absolutely 100% loyal to him because he is 100% loyal to the people and america first and, then, fred, she goes on to say i won't back down, i'll never apologize, and i'll always keep fighting for the people. this is spilled out in a very public way in a very public arena. she has taken on house speaker nancy pelosi who says that the enemy is here, within the u.s. congress, referring to greene and some other republican lawmakers. we have also now heard from senator mitt

let's get to cnn's suzanne malveaux on capitol hill for us this morning. what more can we expect? >> reporter: happy new year, ana. as the new year rings in here of course it will ring in with some political theater as well as we look forward to january 6. normally a mundane joint session of congress to ratify the election. that is not going to be the case. there will be drama. yes, cnn learning that at least 140 republicans on the house side will object to the election results, called for those election results to be overturned despite the fact that you have federal state court cases, justice department, homeland security, all saying that they were legitimate, that there was no evidence of widespread fraud. some of the reasons why of course some of these lawmakers looking not to be my prayer yeed, don't want the ire of the president and are saying that their own voters are asking for this as well. they will be joining senator josh hawley on the senate side who is also going to object. they will go through a debate process and so ultimately the election will be certified but it wi

suzanne malveaux joins us from capitol hill.more about the timeline. >> reporter: this deal that was struck by the new senate majority leader, chuck schumer, and senator mitch mcconnell offers both sides something that they want, this two-week period allowing potentially democrats in the biden administration an opportunity to get some of those cabinet nominations through. at the same time mcconnell asking for the trump legal team to give them time to prepare for this case. not as much time as he had hoped, but certainly a two-week window. here is how it becomes in earnest on monday, january 25th, literally you have the house managers will walk through the capitol from the white house side to the senate side and present the single article of impeachment to the secretary of the senate, incitement of insurrection. and then the formality the next day as required by the constitution, there will be some ceremonial functions of the trial, including a summons issued to trump. february 2nd, a critical deadline where trump has to give his
