and suzanne candiotti joins me now. what is it like around the clerk's office this morning? >> reporter: there is no missing the nervous energy and excitement that i think any couple that is about to get married is facing, and beyond that, t. j., this is a day that many gay rights activist have been waiting for for a lifetime. you can see the couples lining up and have been here for a couple hours. some women in wedding gowns as well. a lot of tuxedos. and there are 800 couples getting married here, and more than half here at city hall. i spent some time yesterday helping to get things done, and noticing a lot of jitters. these two are way beyond excited. would you say you have butterflies in your stomach right now? >> butterflies, more like dragon flies in my stomach. >> reporter: the significance has not escaped them, or what they hope to proudly tell their children one day. >> i guess what will tell them when we were young there was no such thing as gay people getting married, and we were there when it happened. >> they planned on saving the e-mail from city hall allowing

suzanne candiotti live tonight with details on just what the fbi is investigating. >> reporter: the fbi is calling this a high priority and is digging in its heels. this is going to be a broad ranging investigation. in fact, they're going to be looking into some of the very same things they were looking at in the uk. looking at phone records, looking at voice mails here in the united states, to see whether any employees or associates may have hakd into these records to see if they could get any information about 9/11 victims or their families, john. >> susan, preliminary inquiry. do they have any evidence or suspicions and complaints? >> reporter: they do have suspicions and complaints, to say the very least. in fact, there have been some reports that a former police officer, investigator, was asked by news corp, there is a news story to that effect, to look into phone records but that he said he wouldn't do it. they do have some things to work with. certainly there have been a wide ranging number of calls by members of congress to look into this and 9/11 families as well. >>> democrati

want to get to suzanne candiotti. she has new news related to the murdoch hacking scandal and the family. >> the families of 9/11 victims who had been worried about whether their phone records might have been hacked, they have now been given a meeting with the u.s. attorney general, eric holder, and fbi director, mr. muller. after the fbi launched its investigation last week to see whether any phone records or voice mails had been hacked, that's when the families started to ask for the meeting because they are worried it might have occurred. it's important to remember that the suspicion this might have happened was reported in a british newspaper, a tabloid. they cited an unnamed source that claimed that a private investigator here in new york had been contacted by a reporter to hack into these phone records, and that the investigator had turned them down. so families want to know whether this indeed did occur. so far our understanding is that no evidence has shown up, but of course the investigation is just now getti
