david petraeus out as director of the cia. the four-star general and architect of the war in iraq resigned after admitting he had an affair. suzanne kelly has the latest. >> hi, erin, well, a u.s. official confirms to cnn that the fbi investigated a tip that he was involved in an extramarital affair, paula broadwell. she spent a year with petraeus in afghanistan for the book he wrote. cnn has not been able to reach broadwell for a comment and it's not clear whether she is the woman whom petraeus had the affair. the counterintelligence unit investigated d the tip to see i there was a security risk. they said tl not suggestion that the fbi was investigating for wrong doing. the concern was that he could be in a vulnerable spot. >> and is there any information that you have in terms of this information that the fbi had as to whether this woman that you mentioned, paula broadwell, we'll talk more about her, that she would have accessed his information with his approval or unbeknownest to him? >> i know the two kept in touch. i've worked with paula professionally as well. i've reached out to her several times today and haven't gotten a

army general david petraeus has resigned citing an extramarital affair. our intelligence correspondent suzanneare you learning, fran? >> cnn can now confirm from a u.s. official that the fbi had a tip that david petraeus was involved in an extramarital affair. that's the way they would have sort of started an investigation. the fbi woif been the ones to look into that. the official told us that the fbi counterintelligence unit investigated this to see whether or not there was a potential security risk really whether anyone could have taken this information and blackmailed general petraeus with it, which would have been a security risk. the official says there's no suggestion that the fbi was investigating petraeus for any possible wrong doing but more they were looking at him for potential vulnerability. >> they were looking to see if this affair which he has now acknowledged potentially could have resulted in classified information going to an inappropriate source, is that what you're saying? >> that's one possibility that the fbi looks at when they conduct investigations like this. another w

david petraeus. let's bring in suzanne kelly who's working this part of the story.ing out about what yet another government information? >> yeah, wolf. this is a bit of a bombshell breaking news this evening. we're just hearing now from a cia spokesman, preston galsman there's going to be a new investigation into the conduct of general petraeus while he was at the cia. let me read to you this statement we have briefly. at the cia we're constantly reviewing our performance. if there are lessons to be learned from this case we'll use them to improve, but we're not getting ahead of ourselves. it's an investigation. it's exploratory and doesn't presuppose any particular outcome. but just the cia inspector general looking into the conduct of general david petraeus is another new twist in this tonight, wolf. >> what are you hearing about what happened in the closed door hearings today on capitol hill? >> right. as you can imagine based on the guest list, this was really the first comprehensive account of what officials were doing as events unfolded that night. and a gover

david petraeus. u.s. government official is telling cnn the affair that caused petraeus' stepdown was first revealed through an fbi investigation. suzanne kelly has more now. suzanne? >> we now know from a u.s. official it was a complaint that paula broadwell, the woman who wrote the biography of general peatry was was sending harassing e-mails to another woman that prompted the fbi to investigate. also we know from that source that the investigation led to the discovery of e-mails between broadwell and petraeus that indicated the affair. that second woman hasn't been identified and the official we spoke with didn't know the nature of that woman's relationship with the former director. but more details are coming out about the time line of events and when u.s. officials were notified of the circumstances of this investigation. senior u.s. intelligence official tells cnn the fbi informed the director of national intelligence, james clapper, about the investigation on tuesday night, election night, just as some polls were beginning to close, and that director clapper as a friend, colleague, fellow officer and admirer, urged petraeus to st

david petraeus. broadwell is the woman who wrote petraeus' biography and spent time with him overseas. i want to bring in suzanney was not compromised and agents did interview petraeus. do we know if they have questioned ms. broadwell at all in connection to this? >> no, we don't know that yet. that's going to be one of the unanswered questions. there's a long list. we know the affair came to light from the u.s. officials during the course of the fbi investigation. and we know that petraeus was not the target of the investigation but they were investigating the suspicious e-mails. we also know from the source that the fbi did have a conversation with petraeus, still trying to put together the timeline on how all of these things, how quickly it happened, how long this investigation may have taken, susan. >> and do you know when petraeus' boss, the director of the national intelligence, know about this fbi probe and when did the president know about it? there's been a lot of buzz about was this known before the election, and did they wait until snow? >> right, a lot more of those blanks are fill in as well. it app
