swain and dr. jones identified it. but as he told you, it was almost illedgible. in the summer of 2003, almost 40 years later, i asked the north carolina state archives to send me a copy of the diary. but when it arrived i couldn't read a word in it. i asked two professional transscribers at the archives if they could help me and they told me it was written in code, which was entirely possible because rose sent many of her messages out in code. one said it would take 1,000 hours to translate and that it couldn't be done. the former editor of the papers of jefferson davis referred me to dr. jones, mr. north carolina, he called him, saying he might have a copy of the transdescription. when i first contacted dr. jones i said i was writing a biography of rose. and if he knew of her diary. he said he did. he said he had one. i boldly asked if he shared it with me proudly telling him that i was a news reporter. it didn't fly. i told him it would add a voice to rose's manuscript. i know he thought i worked for "people" magazine. he was very doubtful. the news reporter pa
