alex: there's a lot going on in sxsw for sure. we have seen a lot of devices.e seeing the emergence, a focus on women this year and diversity are you boil it down to themes and frankly, i have taken a lot of meetings off-campus. there are wonderful folks and from the west coast. a lot of coffees and drinks and having a good time here. but you know, eric schmidt is one of the keynotes and those will be some of the interesting things -- cory: let's start with edward snowden. last year, edward snowden spoke via satellite from russia where he is on the lam basically. he spoke again this year. maybe the shock value was lost. it did not get that much attention. alex: this year he is hammering that idea home that the government should be staying out of our information and it is the tech companies that need to be the shield for their users. if users are going to trust somebody with their data, with their information, it is on the tech companies to maintain that data for the users. cory: in terms of the connected home -- we have been hearing about the connected home for

cory: i wish i went to sxsw. i know eric schmidt and megan smith. have interrupted her a million times and i know the dynamic of the conversation can be like that. in a broader context, if you don't know those individuals -- i'm sure eric and megan have interrupted each other and fought a lot over the years. i wonder if this is any different. jon: the person who raised the issue first was a google employee in the audience. it speaks to not just having diversity at the lower levels of the company, but at the most senior levels. it's wonderful that we have a female cco for the united states. google has done a better job than many companies at promoting women through their leadership ranks. sheryl sandberg, marissa mayer, these are people who rose up the letter. megan smith rose up the ladder at google. google sometimes becomes unnecessarily criticized around these issues because they are a lightning rod. they have done some incredible work on this area. cory: thank you very much. ♪ cory: i'm cory johnson. silicon valley is the heart of technology but

i spoke with david at the sxsw conference in austin.'s amazing with all of the new streaming services that exist and people are listening to it on their phones and headphones, it's a lonely experience. we thought, why not make it socially again and partner with twitter and take advantage of their audio card. cory: bringing music to mobile and going back to the ipod seems like it's reviving the music industry. the licensing quality, how much money apple was able to hold away from the publishers hurt the industry. more listening, less money, what's the background? guest: we had to make a decision as rhapsody that we would pay for the music that people listen to on twitter. the reason we are doing that is because we want to expose the world to the fact that streaming music exists and rhapsody is here and has been here for a long time and we have a fantastic growing subscriber base. it's still very early days. less than 1% of the people in the world are using a subscription music service. we want to educate the market that you can listen to

tom: i saw john perretti do a presentation at sxsw and he told the origin tale, i'm sure you have seen this many times and he said, when we started buzzfeed we started with the presumption that the traditional advertising on the web is called banner and pop-up ads, he said, we start with the presumption that banner ads and popup ads suck and we're going to invent a new form that people like as much as the rest of our content and really gave a big impetus to what is called sponsored content. is that 100% of your revenue? aneri: i think so. i do not have to think about that in my area as an editor. tom: you have no involvement in creating this sponsored content. max: no. there is a chinese wall. tom: how about at vice? rocco: people still buy magazines to look at the advertisement, so that worked for so long. it is church and state and there is a third prong which is technology. technology, you look at ink on paper for so long. technology develops more quickly as we move through time. and you see pop-up ads. those quickly lost their value. you are seeing native advertising. whatever word
