federal safety o >>> good afternoon, i'm sydnie kohara. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat.istory of trouble in san bruno. >> federal safety officials reveal today that the pipeline that exploded sprang a leak years before. anne makovec is in san bruno, where we are just now hearing from the head of the national transportation safety board. anne? >> reporter: she says this is the kind of information she would have expected to hear months ago. pg&e just revealed a few weeks ago that the pipeline in this same area sprang a leak back in 1988. they only told investigators about this a few weeks ago. the chair of the national transportation safety board, deborah hersman, and congresswoman jackie speier were touring the site of the blast just within the past hour in part to announce some new safety recommendations. hersman also talked about pg&e's faulty recordkeeping and says the leak revelation shows just how inadequate it is and that the nation has a lot to learn from what happened here. >> no need to tell you anything about the tragedy that occurred here in this community. you

i'm sydnie kohara. >> hard to believe it's june already. hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat.e now is 6:30. and finally some good news on your morning commute. 880 northbound in oakland re- opened just within the past 15 minutes. that after a major crash shut it down for hours this morning. >> let's get right to gianna for an update. >> it will take time for traffic to get back up to speed. residual slowing. but this is what we were dealing with this morning. it was a hit-and-run accident, one vehicle fled the scene. they shut down northbound 880 between 980 and 7th street for several hours because of a diesel fuel spill, as well. it took time to mop it up. now all 880 back up to speed. if you are heading towards the bay bridge toll plaza, no problems. a backup beyond this because of the delays along 880, folks trying to get around the mess. it's the usual stuff, 880 looking better. we are going to see delays probably approaching the caltrans area which is in the center divide there along 880. but it is improving towards the maze. let's check in with lawrence for the forecast.

and i m sydnie kohara. >> smith: finally tonight, the term "hero" is used so often we can forget whatreally is. then along comes someone to remind us. an army ranger who served eight tours in iraq and afghanistan is about to be awarded the medal of honor, only the second living recipient since vietnam. david martin at the pentagon tells his story. >> reporter: sergeant leroy petry, a kid who nearly flunked out of high school, became a man who gave his right hand to save his fellow army rangers. it happened three years ago almost to the day on a raid in afghanistan. as petry stormed into a courtyard he was hit by a bullet which went through both legs. he and two other rangers took cover behind a chicken coop. a grenade knocked all three to the ground. a second grenade probably would have killed or seriously injured them. but the wounded petry grabbed it and threw it back. just after he released it, the grenade detonated, blowing away his right hand. still, petry had the presence of mind to apply his own tourniquet. petry, who has spent most of the last ten years operating in the secrec

i'm sydnie kohara. thanks so much for joining us. >> absolutely. i'm frank mallicoat.:31. let's get a quick look at traffic and weather. lawrence karnow is back in the good graces of everybody because last week was kind of a tough week for you, big guy. >> it was. this weekend we had that record rainfall. things are settling down but still some clouds this morning. this afternoon scattered showers mainly to the east and south bay but they will be widely scattered and i think the weather improves, more sunshine coming our way and temperatures are going to be heating up this week. we'll have more on that in a moment. >> we are continuing to watch the bay bridge toll plaza. we have several things going on. they just turned the metering lights on. we have a high wind advisory in effect and we still have this accident, still no new details on it. we know it's blocking the left lane just past the metering lights. big rig versus motorcycles. chp is heading out now. things stacking up beyond the west grand overcrossing so we'll watch this possibly developing hotspot here. in t
