now, the third fire started late last night in the city of sylmar. photojournalist alex vasquez from our la sister station is on the front lines of that eden fire. now, in his report sent to us just a short time ago. it's going to give you just an idea of what firefighters are up against. you're seeing here is l.a. get a stance. save the home next door. this home here is not burned. this is the home that's fully engulfed. and they're doing their best to keep the flames off this other home. now you can take a look at how strong this wind actually is. these flames are actually flying so far about 18ft. now take a look at these embers. as you can see there in the firefighters face. one firefighter told me he's having a hard time even being able to see out here. so let me get you a close look here at what they're doing. this is this is how they're putng water on this house, trying to keep the flames just feet away from this roof rig here. so this is a full blown hand combat, as they call it, trying to keep the flames down away from the other home, trying

, socal edison, is examining its transmission lines by the fires that burned through altadena and sylmar. arson investigators, meanwhile, are out in the palisades fire burn zone looking for any sign of where that fire may have started. joining me now is john darmanin. he's a retired fire captain who led the arson task force for san francisco. thank you very much for being here. so let's begin at the beginning. where do arson investigators look? especially in an area like pacific palisades, which is decimated. i mean, what are the clues? well, thanks for having me, jessica. well, it's an analysis of a combination of the actual original fire report, the location of the initial reports, eyewitnesses to pinpoint an area to start looking at physical evidence. it's time consuming, but arson investigators there were probably on the scene just after initial fire crews showed up to start their investigation. but many times, witnesses will point you in the right direction and you'll either prove or disprove what they have to say. looking at specific areas is important. you. you will look at physic

and the la fire department confirmed another fire has broken out in sylmar in the san fernando valley in just the last hour. the palisades fire first broke out about 1030 this morning and has now burned nearly 3000 acres. an estimated 30,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders, with impacted communities stretching from malibu to santa monica. structures have already burned and tens of thousands are under threat. firefighters are not planning to hold another press conference until 8:00 tomorrow morning. around 40 miles east of there is the eaton fire, which is 400 acres with 0% containment. a crew from our sister station captured this jarring video of flames surrounding a street in altadena tonight. these people trying to evacuate their horses after letting others free in hopes of escaping the inferno. >> we booked out of there to get these out. i got, i got let's see. >> we loaded for two. >> three. what is that? nine. and how are these horses doing? >> 11. 12. there's 12. yeah. no, they're pretty wired up there. yeah. they're getting used to. >> they're getting used to it no

and the hurst fire near sylmar is now more than 700 acres. it is 37% contained tonight. that is good news there. more firefighters in the bay area really across the west coast, are headed to los angeles to join in the firefight. the strike teams are arriving from every corner of the bay area. san mateo county actually has deployed more than 150 firefighters, along with about two dozen engines and a drone to help in the firefight. san francisco has sent more than 30 fire personnel to the palisades and eaton fires. and tonight in all, there are about 7500 firefighters helping to gain control of these wildfires. now, these fires raising questions for all californians about the challenges of getting affordable fire coverage in the future. as more insurance companies drop homeowners coverage and refuse to sign new policies. the department of insurance says the la fires will not impact new rules that allow insurance companies to use new tools to better assess future fire risk, as they set premium prices and coverage, rather than relying only on historical data. and back now to
