the synagogues are diverse. they are reformed jewish, conservative jewish, orthodox jewish, all different strains within that. the synagogues there who are coexisting comfortably together. you can be there on a saturday morning and see very religious jews walking the neighborhood streets alongside secular jews who may be going to play basketball at the jewish community center, the jcc which is large facility right not heart. and it is a really fantastic urban neighborhood. >> people just choosing how they want to spend a beautiful saturday morning met with this kind of crime. it is absolutely extraordinary. so these three different areas within the synagogue, you are familiar with it enough that -- is there one that is the general congregation area, and that there may be separate gatherings for different sort of religious focus? do they put children in one area? can you explain that? >> sure, typically in the larger synagogue in particular there are multiple venues for prayer. there may be a main sanctuary which

five minutes later the calls started to come in from the synagogue of the shooting. a minute later authorities say the first pittsburgh officer, uniformed officer, showed up. by then they say that bowers had already shot and killed those 11 people. and then that officer was injured. another officer was injured. two s.w.a.t. officers also were injured. we're told that this entire thing, from start to finish, the moment he walked in to the moment he was taken out, lasted 20 minutes. and that in those 20 minutes he had four weapons with him. an assault weapon and three handguns. not clear if he used all four. investigators say they are not aware of any history with him, they had no history, nothing of him being involved with the local law enforcement. but of course they're getting to know him right now. they do believe he worked alone. as it relates to charges, the u.s. attorney who is in charge of the western district here in pennsylvania says those charges could come as soon as this evening. so the investigation here and the footprint around us right now is large beca

>> christi, i am just about a block was he from the tree of life synagogue. you can see it there at the top of the hill over my shoulder and still a significant law enforcement footprint keeping people away from that synagogue. a crime scene still this morning and in a few hours, this community will hear the list of names of those who were killed. the 11 people who lost their lives. but loyal this tight-knit squirrel hill community, they know the names of the people who did not come home. cell phones that were not answered, the houses that have been untouched since the tragedy hit this community. now this morning, the suspected shooter, robert bowers, he faces federal hate crime charges after police say he stormed into that synagogue, unleashed torrent of bullets on worshipers and in all the mass murderer faces 11 counts of murder and according to a criminal complaint filed last night the suspected killer told s.w.a.t. officers he wanted more to die. a news conference will be held and likely release the names. agents say the suspects online profile, that will

that was one of his synagogues.st, and then go and see my brother and cry with him. that is probably what i am going to do today. our north america correspondent gary o'donoghue is covering events from pittsburgh. you can see the synagogue in the distance behind me. this is where at ten o'clock this morning the authorities say robert bowers entered that synagogue and shot dead inii entered that synagogue and shot dead in 11 people, wounding several others, including four police officers. we understand two people are still critically ill in hospital. the authorities are now searching a home—made few miles away from here where they believe robert bowers lives. they are doing that with extreme caution because they hear the home might be booby—trapped. bowers himself was shot during that composite —— confrontation. they eventually got him on the third floor of the synagogue where he had arrogated himself inside a room, and he managed to wound several officers during that exchange of fire. —— barricaded. he is in custody

two other synagogues that rent space in the synagogue.here were two services, one of which was from the tree of life and then there was another service from a separate synagogue called d dor hadash and new life did have a bris. so there was a bris, a third event that was also occurring at the synagogue and between the three synagogues it would be fair to guesstimate probably about 30 to 40 individuals were at the synagogue at the time. >> i understand. what did your father share with you that you feel comfortable sharing with us? >> it all felt like slow motion. i think the first thing that occurred was he heard a loud noise and a couple of congregants went to investigate the loud noise because it was quite possible maybe a senior citizen hay horrific fall or maybe there was some kind of material or something at the synagogue which caused a loud noise. and when a xufcouple of the congregants went down the noise was unmistakable. from then on it was treated like an active shooter situation. my dad was actually not supposed to be there. the

your synagogue, we understand, is just two blocks away from the tree of life synagogue there in squirrel hill. first, you knew -- you know the rabbi of that congregation well, and i imagine you know many of the worshippers. what's your reaction to this horrific attack? >> that's true. when we gather for shabat worship, for sabbath. prayers of peace. it's horrific. >> we've spoken with experts about the significant upstick in anti-semitic incidents. when you see something like this happen, are you surprised? can you tell me about the general feeling across american jewish communities in terms of the threat? a gunman coming in with guns blazing and innocence in schools and churches. it's not the first house of worship that this has taken place. seik temples, african-american churches. now here in pittsburgh. we're just torn asundayer, our community. what can turn into deadly danger? >> i think we just have a culture today that is rife with guns and inflamed rhetoric. i think there is a tremendous sense of loneliness and alienation that's part of our cultural fabric today. we're seeing the

synagogue at the same time. we heard of the danger.d, as the loss of our brothers and sisters. and the kroger's attack is no different. an attack on -- a murderous attack on people of color. the biggest reflection for me is that the tone that has become pervasive in our country. and it's asymmetrical. both sides have said things they shouldn't, but it's so imbalanced towards what the president and his enablers have done. that tone of hate, when targeting anybody whose different, wolf, any minority, anybody who doesn't look like president trump, when he targets them, it has a spillover effect on everyone. in my book, i write about a hundred years of these assaults on democracy. and his words of hatred and of violence, his incitement of violence. wherever that happens, joews ar also targets. >> you have been doing some reporting on this, rebecca. what do you think has led to this current climate out there, where there are these haters. >> well, there seems to be an agreement, wolf, that it's really a convergence of a number of factors, t
