t-mobile u.s.ompetitors this past quarter by offering contract-free services and deep discounts. but all that price cutting came with a cost. the company reported a loss of 19 cents per share. the street seems to be pretty happy today. the stock, as you can see on your screen, is up more than $2. it was up 8% earlier, it's now up about 7.5%. i sat down with john ledger, u.s. president and ceo, and i asked him where the massive gain in customers is worth the loss in profitability. >> we have to pause on this, cheryl. think about this. t-mobile is growing so fast. one year ago company was started, tmus with the merger. we not only added 2.4 million in q1, we added i million in the last -- 6 million in the last 12 months. 3.5 million ads if a year -- in a year. what you learned today is that the wireless industry actually was growing in q1. people thought it wasn't because they looked at the other guys' numbers. our phone net ads grew 12 times our near competitor, and usually people think i'm exaggera

sprint is making a bid for t-mobile. at&t failing to buy t-mobile. what is the bigger picture here? how is it evolving? isin the case of video, it trembling and quaking underneath the major providers. paid tv is basically a legacy business. it is tv by appointment. of sense anda lot what at&t is doing. this gives us more leverage with content providers -- well that is not going to happen because the business has fragmented so much that it is not the same business it was five years ago. >> should we, as consumers, be worried about the paid tv business being controlled by fewer parties? it has been rumored for a few days -- the customer service lack of appreciation for both at&t and directv -- as well as ie price going up higher, think that is a real concern for consumers. the businesses spend so much to do these acquisitions, but they will also face less competition. i wonder, you have watched these -- what is going on at the fcc that the companies think they can get the deals through? the fcc is wrestling with time warner and comcast. resistancelot more at a regulatory level than ,

when at&t did this with t-mobile, there was about a $7 billion breakup fee. t-mobile became a much stronger competitor than it was before. softbank wants to avoid that. >> i would be interested to get both your takes on that. do you think that signals he is saying i am not 100% sure? mission may be that the regulatory story is not on his side. >> it is a bit of a hedge. we don't know what the number is going to be in the attempt to take over t-mobile. isthing south of $7 billion an indication that they are not as confident as at&t was. at&t was overconfident. i remember talking to bankers who were convinced this was going to go through. they thought it was a layup. everyone was so shocked. now we have mr. son making this play. perhaps the only ceo that is more interesting than masayoshi son would be john legere, the ceo of t-mobile. next time, we are all going to wear pink t-shirts. >> not a problem for me. >> i can do that. we can all do that. matt doesn't normally wear a tie. he is looking very smart. would be much more in keeping with my usual look. >> tha
