here is another one of these fantastic grand manner full-length portraits of nellie taft, helen taft, responsible for having all of this beautiful cherry trees planted on the tidal basin, which she fell in love with during her travels in the philippines and in japan before her husband ascended to the presidency. here is a small portrait, four or five inches, of ida mckinley. when i was doing research for the exposition, i spent some time at the first ladies library, a wonderful place, and they were very helpful. i learned so much about ida mckinley. they occupy, in part, the mckinley house that belonged to her family. one of the things that really stands out about this portrait is ida mckinley had a very difficult life. it was not easy for her after mary and william mckinley, the couple had two daughters who died in pretty quick succession. this stereoscopic picture was published as a series of stereographs. these kind of three-dimensional images, you look through the viewer and the two images combined together to create a three-dimensional effect. the series was published when her hu
