currently unhealthy air quality across a large portion of tahoe.a few hours ago. contrast that to the bay area where we've got that onshore fresh breeze keeping our air quality in that good category. let's talk about what's happening in terms of that smoke. in the near term a couple showers are on live doppler 7 near tahoe will bring a little relief from the smoke in the next hour or so, but the longer picture showing you heading into tomorrow the near surface smoke again by 3 p.m. in the afternoon on our monday, it is pretty thick not only across tahoe, but much of northern nevada. unfortunately that wind pattern will continue where that smoke emanating from the dixie fire will continue to blow to the east into the southeast. we will have those issues around tahoe likely the next couple days. back at home a live picture, sutro tower, got the marine layer pushing in over twin peaks. heading downtown our air quality is good in the bay area. our pm2.5 levels, that particulate matter, below 50, which is good fresh air for a majority of the region, may

this is the main artery coming up from south lake tahoe into lake tahoe. briefly shut down 395 was briefly shut down as crews cleared those boulders. it has since reopened, 395. the quake hit about two hours ago. the exact time, 3:49 p.m. it was centered on the california side of the border. you can see the map here. it's triggered a cluster of aftershocks between lake tahoe and mono lake. so far, more than 40 aftershocks. one as high as 4.6. here's another look at some of the rock slides triggered by this quake. you can see, again, you can see people looking up on the hillslide, all the dust and debris from the falling rocks. one point, 395, the main freeway there, was shut down. >> they were able to reopen in about an hour and a half. and we have had, like you said, a dozen aftershocks. some strong. let's check in with jeff ranieri. what can you tell us about the earthquake and the aftershocks? >> based on the seismic area we're dealing with and the size of the fault lines which are -- it's made of a bunch of smaller different fault lines in that seismic

tahoe right now a live look. got smoke overhead. a lot of smoke from fires around lake tahoe.d this will continue to be an issue not only today but also tomorrow. and that's creating some air quality concerns. here's the satellite today. you can see all of that smoke from numerous fires right here. there is that plume of smoke just stretching through redding over into lake tahoe. for us in the bay area, we have that onshore breeze keeping smoke away from us right now. but again, it is creating issues when we come to air quality. around lake tahoe, unhealthy air quality in a lot of spots because that smoke is just sitting overhead. it's going to stay there tomorrow as well. closer to home with that breeze we're doing a-okay. we have good air quality for most locations this afternoon. as we take a look at the smoke forecast overnight and tomorrow morning, you notice the smoke really is going to stay thick in the same areas it's sitting in right now. so again, tomorrow if you have plans to go to the sierra, just know you will encounter some heavy smoke at times. air quality back

eastern side of the sierra but close to the california nevada border and to the southeast of southlake tahoe and reports of how strong the shaking was and have been widely variable in terms of the did you feel it map and reports being made by the us geological survey and i know it is a splotchy map here, but this gets filtered out by zip code so that is why you see the pattern you do and the strongest reports are closer to the center of that earthquake, but it is a sparsely populated part of california and mountainous terrain along 395 and it has caused some concern but toward the lower end of the spectrum even as close to the center of southlake tocco -- tahoe and we have had some reports of light shaking from the east bay but the weather producer in the mission district in san francisco reported feeling it at his house as well so we are talking a wide field of those reports coming in of the shaking being felt even in the bay area. these are all of the aftershocks and the center is the first quake that occurred at 3:49 and that is the 5.9 quake and the red dots. and these are all of the aft

there is lake tahoe, these are all clouds in the white. that is the plume of smoke coming off the fire. so there is a lot of it coming off the fire right now. it is developing into one of those pyro cumulus clouds. they go really high in the atmosphere and since smoke very far away. if you take a look at where the highest concentration of smoke is now, the wind is working in our favor. we don't have to be concerned about smoke from that fire coming our way. if you look at the wider view, there are a complex of fires through northernmost california and into oregon. the tamarack fire is one of the smaller was at this point. we have kind of gotten into the heart of the season which brings me to the most important point of the conversation. there is a fire with a concern for us here at home tomorrow in the bay area. a red flag warning has been issued for the mountains surrounding the bay area in effect from sunday afternoon through monday. we have a 20% chance tomorrow or dried lightning. kind of a typical summer pattern for us. i will explain

and smoke from the fire is now visible at lake tahoe. this fire was sparked by a lightning strike back on the fourth of july, the largest wildfire in the u. s right now is the bootleg fire in southern oregon near the california state line. so far, almost 409,008 have burned over the last three weeks. it's inching toward 50% containment. the fire has destroyed more than 70 homes. most mountain cabins and thousands more are in the fire's path. thousands of people have been evacuated. shortage of jet fuel and in urgent demand from firefighting aircraft continues to cause problems at airports across the west. the shortage could delay cargo delivery and passenger travel at reno tahoe international airport in the coming days. the need for jet fuel to fight massive wildfires in the pacific northwest has led to departure problems and day long flight delays at airports. here in california. recent flights in and out of fresno yosemite international airport were disrupted by jet fuel shortages blamed on the lack of tanker truck deliveries. now we t

christensen most tells us residents in south lake tahoe are keeping a very close eye on this fire. mhm as the tamarack fire continues to grow in alpine county. a few ridgelines over the community of south lake tahoe watches and remembers the first thing i think of his angle right because i was a fallen leaf lake that day. were there for like, five missed me, my family and we saw that huge smoke coming over the mountain. the wind driven angora fire in 2000 and seven consumed more than 200 homes as the community watched in horror. now residents are quick to be concerned when they see smoke from a nearby fire. it's far enough away where we can we can watch it closely and have some time to prepare. if anything, does change, captain kim george has been trying to ease the concerns of residents. she says the tamarack fire is burning primarily in the opposite direction and not a threat to tahoe at all right now. at the same time, we're asking people to think through the evacuation plan, like things that you might grab have a list of the things you know that you're going to want to take if
