is there a safety protocol to open runs at tahoe resorts? >> i can't speak specifically to the protocols that palisades operates under to identify what the safest conditions are to open a run like that are, but ski patrol's main duty and what their main goal is to balance opening as many runs as they can while keeping it safe enough for the general public to operate within. they have many tools in their tool belt to operate this way. and like the interview said previously, dropping explosives in this region as well as artillery and those sorts of thing mitigate the risk of avalanche danger. >> and we should say this is part of the deal as skiers. this is always a risk, especially in treacherous weather. with this is your expertise, how long do crews actually have to reach a skier buried in an avalanche? is it minutes? 30 minutes or an hour? >> it really depends. the two main things that possible victims face in these sorts of incidents when an avalanche occurs include trauma caused by the snow sliding through obstacles such as trees or cliff

now take a look at palisades tahoe where it is. let's talk about what possible factors may have contributed. so the sierra snowpack right now in the central sierra is 38% of average. you've got multiple layers here. typically you have a bed layer a weak layer and a slab layer. now with the snowpack not very built up, any precipitation on top of that wind temperature changes can really impact it. so let's take a look at the factors. those are the factors. and humans can trigger an avalanche. as snowboarders and skiers go down the slopes. at the time there were powerful wind gusts nearby about 100 plus miles an hour. one thing to consider is safety. wearing perhaps an avalanche beacon, especially as we're getting more and more snow up in the mountains. at the time of the accident, it was light snow. as you look at the radar taking you back in time, but it was gusty and the snow has been picking up steadily tonight. winter storm warning until 1 a.m. tomorrow. up to 18in for the peaks with those gusty winds. snow level dropping to 2500

so you could see lake tahoe, tahoe city and palisades is right around here on this map as we come inloser, we're going to take you up to one of the higher peaks in the palisades region, and that's up towards siberia, over 8000ft. and take a look at that wind profile this morning. you can see 113 to 106 miles an hour. the thinking is, with all that dry snow and that really strong wind, it blows it all in one spot. and where that accumulates, that could lead to possibly some failure. so avalanche status, the danger was in the considerable range for today and for tomorrow. once again, that's pretty much the same story. so they actually have a lot more snow even after that event, with the with more snowfall throughout the day today and into tonight. in fact, here is the satellite and the radar. you can see all the snow out toward the sierra as we come in closer. they have the winter storm warning in place. chains on 80 and 50. so they'll continue to pick up the snowfall for this evening here in the bay area. some scattered rain showers still for the 7:00 hour. tracking some lightrilliona

we are going to the tahoe basin. we have shown you where alpine and squaw sit, on the northwest side of tahoe, just in case you have never been there. that's get into a closer look at the valley. the terrain of this particular peak, kt-22, is legendary. you will see why. when we leave behind olympic village which sits down there, it is the first peak to the left . it has been called one of the most dramatic chairlifts in the world. it sits at 8000 feet high. this was the first day you could take that lift because the snow season has been so unusual. look at that peak. as we traverse around it, what i want to drive home is the steepest of that bowl. that is the view looking back down toward olympic village. this is the bowl within which that avalanche happened. in addition to the terrain, there was the setup. we had very weak storms come through up until two weeks ago. there was not a lot of action. the snowpack had developed this very risky layer to it because it had time to melt and freeze and ice over and get very
