so let's go in a little bit closer here to the palisades tahoe area, which is at one of the higher elevations9000ft, which means it's getting that area is getting some of the coldest air, some of the strongest wind gusts and some of the heaviest snowfall from this storm. we'll take a look at the winter storm warning, which will be in effect until 1 a.m. for a much wider area of the sierra, including the greater tahoe area, in effect until 1 a.m, we're expecting a snow totals to range from 1 to 2ft. snow levels down to between 2500 and 3500ft, and snow rates at 1 to 2in per hour, which is a pretty furious snowstorm. and of course, the wind gusts up to 60mph can produce whiteout conditions. obviously, travel is very virtually impossible right now. certainly difficult now. the wind gust graph shows that the winds will start to diminish in intensity a little bit going into the late night hours. after about 8 or 9 p.m, but until then, we'll may see gusts between 45 and about. higher in the higher elevations. and the three day forecast, including today, shows more heavy snow and gusty wind for toda

truckee and the base around the rim of the greater lake tahoe area, you can expect 6 to 8in of snow, but but it's going to come at a price with up to 50 mile per hour winds and the highest elevations above 7000ft. we're talking about two feet of snow, so we do have that winter storm warning in effect, current air temperature 16 degrees in the greater lake tahoe area. but check out this forecast because not only do we have the snow and the wind on saturday, but dramatic overnight lows only in the single digits, we will recover on monday under mostly cloudy skies, but again, winter storm warning goes into effect in just a matter of minutes and meanwhile, it's all associated with this right here. it's an area of low pressure. it's a cold front, so it has a lot of cold air associated with it. so while we won't see a lot of precipitation, up to about a third of an inch, you can tell it's a big snow maker. and coming up next, we will track this system together. and talk about the winds and that's just in a couple of minutes. >> looking forward to it roberta. thank you. as you just heard fr

if you're heading to the greater lake tahoe area. now, the current air temperature is in the 30s after a high today of 41 degrees. so it certainly is raining there. light snow is moving into the tahoe area on friday. and then again, the accumulation a foot of snow down to 5000ft and then up to about 18in plus in the higher elevations. but we are talking about some gusty winds in excess of 60mph. thus the advisory in place this storm generated out of the gulf of alaska. it has a lot of precipitation associated with it. we're not going to see some huge accumulations because it's moving through. so rapidly. but here's where we are right here. right now. we're talking about the heaviest rain between 4 and 6:00. so right now. so let's see where it is pounding as far as the precipitation is concerned. and of course it is the north bay. but as tom vacar was alluding to, that was about 2:00 today. so the heaviest rain has moved into the vallejo area. take a look at the eastern portion of our bay area. it is raining right around the brentwood

so sending all of our love to the tahoe area. >> and i'm sure they certainly appreciate that. so let's talk about your own experience. as you mentioned, you are an experienced backcountry skier. your mishap happened just a little bit over a year ago in the telluride, colorado area. as you mentioned. and there was also a similar avalanche concern to what we saw yesterday in tahoe. the day that you hit the slopes, paint the picture for us. if you can. what was your first clue that you were actually in an avalanche? >> yeah. i mean, you know, it's all it's a nightmare of people that recreate frequently in the backcountry. um you know, mother nature is stronger than all of the education that we can, uh, provide ourselves. and, you know, my stakes happen. so, you know, it really happened as soon as i made a first turn and the entire slope broke underneath me and, um, i was carried about 800ft down a slope and buried about 12ft below the snow. um, for about 12 minutes, unconscious. >> yeah. i can only imagine, scott, how frightening that must have been. as you mentioned, the kind of

now avalanche watch a posted for this weekend to mainly in the back country in the great lake tahoe area. but they're going to see another storm moving in. this one has different characteristics to it. and that's a lot of part of the problems. when you get these avalanches, you get the storm systems, some coming cold. some come in wet. >> they all have different characters. see the snow that fall and they create different pack. some layers of snow that eventually can give way and cause avalanches up toward the incline village. right now we've got some snow on the side there. kind of rough out there on the waters. they're getting ready for another round of some heavy snow overnight tonight. so far the roadways, not that big of a problem, but that will likely change. tonight. we'll see some heavy snow moving in and the first is going to be coming down. some very low levels. so temperatures out the door right now. we've got some cold air already in place. it's 31 degrees now in freezing in south lake tahoe. a 32 in freezing in truckee. 39 in reno. and now we've got that cold air in place. a

this is the area that the sierra avalanche center put together in terms of a considerable avalanche danger, which includes palisades tahoe. it also is going to be an area that they will keep this up, this avalanche danger up for a while, because tonight's snowfall is going to be significant. now, these are some of the winds, right? this is just vectors representing the wind speeds. but the bigger the vector the arrow, the bigger the arrow, the stronger the wind speeds. so wind gusts up over 100 miles an hour this morning. the layout here at palisades tahoe is this is i'm going to rough this out a little bit, but it's right in it's right in here is kind of the resort. and what i think happened and what some many people i've talked to think happened as well, is the snow king got blew, blew out of this bowl and then kind of just got came down over the top and then settled in to ct right at the top there by the by the chairlift. kind of. it's one of the first bowls on the right when before you get off the chair. so needless to say, it was a surprise. there was considerable concern for avalanche danger from the sierra avalanc

this system here will bring us some light rain showers on saturday, but a big snow maker for the tahoe arear the influence of this ridge of high pressure, albeit weak, so a bright sunny day thursday and friday and looking ahead so you can plan your weekend. we will have bright but breezy conditions. friday. light precipitation saturday and waking up to a chill in the air on sunday. i'm talking about temperatures dipping to the freezing point, so there will be frost on the lawns and on the rooftops. all right, here we go for the sierra forecast. while we do have light rainfall saturday, this is a real snow maker. we have a winter storm watch in effect for saturday through sunday. i would not be surprised if this is upgraded to a warning. we are anticipating nearly two feet of snow above 7000ft at lake level. you'll see some snowflakes up to about six inches right now. 29 degrees around the rim of the lake tahoe area. and then we had that heavy snow and very windy, blustery conditions on saturday. but i want you to be prepared saturday night and sunday night temperatures, single digits, not r

oh, look at that snow on the fly heading into the tahoe area. then wednesday morning, still in the rain for the wednesday morning commute. we clear out by wednesday evening. so meanwhile, by the time it's all said and done, we should pick up anywhere from about 5/100 of an inch of rain and the driest locations across the santa clara valley up to an inch in the wettest spots and into the santa cruz mountains two inches two and a half along the coastal mountains and as far as the snow is concerned, we have a winter weather advisory go into effect tuesday night through wednesday morning for about, let's say, up to eight inches of snow. it's possible at 7000ft at the tioga pass. we have ten inches of snow in the forecast right now, 28 degrees in the greater lake tahoe area. make sure you dress in layers. if you're heading there. it is getting cold at night. take a look at those overnight lows on wednesday and on thursday. so our lows tonight in the 40s. tomorrow's highs into the low 60s. pretty seasonal winter day with the rain showers, rain and bre

. >> all right, let's talk about tahoe bay area drivers heading to lake tahoe this morning. prepared for stormy road conditions. this is interstate 80 at kingvale and you can see there is snow on the ground. this is that slushy stuff that can cause some spinouts. this is when we start to see chain controls dropping into place because caltrans crews, while they try to clear it up quickly, the weather that just keeps coming that very difficult. so when we checked, we see that chains are required on eastbound interstate 80 from cisco grove in placer county to truckee. right now, no chains required on highway 50. that's the other main highway that links the bay area to the lake tahoe area, taking you to south lake tahoe. but again, if you take a look at that roadway as someone who has gotten stuck on roads many times throughout my lifetime, uh, this is slow going. and, you know, on on the uphill, on the downhill, and depending on what kind of car you're in, this is just when you got to bring everything that you might need that definitely gives me the feels from when i lived in u

exact same system that's bringing in heavy snow for our friends all the way up in the sierra-at-tahoe areaking about kt 22 at the palisades and what's happening this weekend is we have more light fluffy but still some wet snow falling up in the higher peak areas. anywhere up to around 20 inches is expected to fall throughout this weekend near kirkwood and about 10 inches a little bit in the lower elevations close to south lake tahoe. this is called for a winter storm warning issued by the national weather service for all the highlighted zones and counties on the man. anywhere up to around 2 feet of snow is expected and not just the snow we're concerned about. it has to do with winds too. winds up there anywhere up to around 50 miles per hour and gusting close to around 70 miles per hour. back here in the bay though, the winds are a lot lighter along our coastline today compared to the past couple of days and we're still seeing wind gusts anywhere up to around 20 miles per hour today close to areas like bodega bay and half-moon bay but throughout the rest of the bay area, it's calm for us.

areas. the great lake tahoe through tomorrow morning. so all those areas shaded in red, though those are currently under avalanche warning right now and will be so until tomorrow morning, then i think we get a little bit of a break, but there's more snow on the way. in fact, winter storm warning still up across parts of the central and southern sierra nevada as the heavy snow expected to continue until about midnight tonight. and then around the bay area. what we had all that water on the ground. and now we're starting to talk about the possibility of fog, some thick, dense to leave fog by tomorrow morning. watch out. that going to be very thick. some visibilities there may be less than a mile as you're traveling into the central value scene overnight tonight. and early tomorrow morning. see that in that area. you can see that variability with some of that fog that moves on through. so very thick as we head throughout the night tonight, early tomorrow morning, looks like we'll dry things out at least for a day. in fact, looks like things

everywhere along our coastline into our inland areas and that's bringing snow for the sierra tahoe areacheers up for a bit as we gear up for more unsettled weather and that will be the case into monday. yes, as 49ers win against green bay packers we are expecting upper 50s and 60s and seeing light rainy conditions sticking around. this is how much it's going to amount to as we head into the weekend's forecast. sunday, over an inch in the north bay, close to a quarter inch in san jose. it's not until monday where we get close to an inch in the santa clara valley with closer to two inches expected in the north bay. an impressive storm, this is truly the calm before the storm. rain within the next hour or two will start rolling into your local areas, especially if you live closer to red wood city and san francisco. into santa clara valley, it will take longer before we see that. past monday we will dry out, for just one day though. more unsettled weather is around the corner. that's the case next week, hit or miss storms continuing to build from offshore. >> thanks. >>> niners and packers

tahoe. authorities say he was from the bay area. >> our sara stinson joins us now live from palisades set tonight with the very latest. sara. >> yeah, very sad. we're just now learning the man who died here at palisades tahoe his name was kenneth kid, 66 year-old who lived both that point rays and here in the truckee area. so obviously came up to go skiing one up to the chairlift. kt. 22. and that's when an average avalanche struck. we also know 3 others injured. minor injuries there. okay. take a look at video we have from earlier. i mean, it's been constantly snowing up here. it's snowing right now. this avalanche struck at 9.30 this morning palisades ski patrol immediately started searching the area with 100 resort workers and community members using rescue technology rescue dog teams. everyone was up here trying to find whoever may be buried by the snow. we spoke with the skier who is on the mountain when disaster struck. >> you know, this could be worst case because it's been storming. chairlift hasn't been open the season. so its new terrain opening up for the first day. >> i was hoping tha

also, there's an avalanche watch for the greater lake tahoe area, the back country areas, those placest maintain like the ski resorts even have trouble the ski resorts this week. but those could have be some issues with the heavyr snow coming in and possible avalanches. all right. so the next couple days we'll see that snow moving in will be heavy at times with some gusty winds tomorrow that will dry things out on sunday and monday. looking good up in the high country. but this storm system a different kind of storm. you see all the way down the honolulu. see this little swirl in the atmosphere. that's an area of low pressure. kind of tugging on the tail of the storm. so to speak. that means we're going to see a different type of storm here in the bay area is a warmer storm system coming through. and so the snow levels are going to start to rise up as we head throughout the day concerned about flooding. yeah, this is going to one that a loaded so we could be talking about some flooding issues in northern california. snow advisories continue over some of the ranges as well around the ba

but taking a closer look and the tahoe area, you notice precipitation has dissipated.y just allowed the national weather service to lift that winter storm warning. still a winter storm warning down south in mammoth lakes, but this just in the last few minutes, so it's ok to travel. just make sure you carry those chains and emergency kits because those mountain passes could be still a little steep, but caltrans will be a heading out cleaning out there is roads. so let's talk about what's next now. so we have cold temperatures in store for us in the bay area and dry conditions to for sunday monday. the next chance of rain. now fast forward. is tuesday and this is a light system. and after that, it looks like we could see chance of rain tuesday into wednesday. and then i want to show you the back side of the week because that's the system where i so this time next weekend, we could be busy. take a look. this is out heavy rain here and even another snow maker for the sierra. so we do have an unsettled pattern for the rest of the week. but next weekend, that's the storm we'

there is a winter storm warning that could go into effect for the greater tahoe area, 5 to 10 locallyt the potential for 20 inches above 7000 feet, in addition to the heavy snow that'll be coming down, we're talking gusty winds, 80 to 100 miles per hour for some of the higher wages so conditions will be dangerous, all the way through the weekend. we get some wins as well into monday and i want to show you the outlook. this paints a picture of what was happening, this is all the way out to january 13, this could be another round into february. we're talking lots of sierra snow for tuesday and wednesday. into friday, we do have some rain as well, but it looks like that system is going to be cold and that will carry over into the weekend but that's the extended outlook. in looking active into the second week of the new year. >> if you're going to tahoe, you have to plan accordingly. >> you might get stuck up there and not be able to come back. >> not a bad place to get stuck. >>> next, the new move at the state capital that could change state capital that could change the futurelook mom,
