so far, the cal door fire has not made that big push into the tahoe basin that many had feared. thousands of people, though, have been evacuated from the south lake tahoe area, and many are holding their breath, hoping those 4000 firefighters can keep the flames out of their communities up until the red flag conditions ease up tomorrow. now governor newsom today visited the fire lines as containment rises on this fire up to 20% want to show you now the latest cal fire map of the cal door fire, it has burned nearly three 120 square miles and 729 structures have now been destroyed. 544 of those are homes you can see here, though the leading edge of the fire on the east side is south of lake tahoe and heading toward the state line. heavenly ski resort is just one of the many businesses along with thousands of homes that are currently in the path of those flames. we have live team coverage where you once again on the calle door fire. our meteorologist, mark tamayo has been they're tracking the wind conditions, but first, let's get over to ktvu is asking the smith with the latest on t

offering hope for the tahoe basin. >> thousands of people are now waiting out the fire in evacuation shelters, not even sure if they're going to have a home to return to many left behind just about everything they have on forestry says stasi spoke to some evacuees that are in truckee. >> i am here in truckee at one of the evacuation centers that has been set up for those people who are forced to flee south lake tahoe in and around the tahoe basin. you can see how some people have just pulled over and set up camp to try and wait out what's going to happen next with the caldor fire. i spoke with one person about how they took off on sunday when the flames and the smoke were just too on irving. >> what are your thoughts right now. just watching it all it's a very frightening. frightening for a lot of people >> do you have friends that are in the area. anybody you know, evacuated. >> know we don't know what most friends are up here >> was it like to be a pure when you all of a sudden like this weekend and just took off. oh, yeah, that's why we actually had it out just in case. so we're j

now, a pair of cousins from the south lake tahoe basin had to evacuate when the caldor fire started closing in on their homes. but when they try to race home to grab some belongings. they were turned away by law enforcement. there. >> yeah, we're pretty much like down the road from my house. mayor. like there's no way i'm so sorry. like. >> you got to get out of town. most of all, of her belongings as everything there. luckily the animals are safe and the family safe. but no way back in. >> well, the girls are now staying at the handily union square hotel in san francisco, which has become a resource for caldor fire evacuees. we've been talking about it. an air quality advisory will be in effect today and tomorrow in the bay area. but there are some steps you can take to make sure the air in your home is clean. well, a new study has found shutting windows and using air filters can cut the particular matter in half. so the air filter doesn't have to be fancy or expensive either. one reaches says says you can bill, you're all on actually using materials like a bucs fan or furnace filters. wel

or start in the basin in the southwest corner of the lake tahoe basin, exactly where it came in. having fire come over echo summit, having high winds, which we had, it was entirely possible in my mind for our entire community and the entire lake tahoe basin go up in flames. that was a low point for me. and i have to tell you, yesterday i visited the evacuation shelters in reno where most of our people are sheltered, and that was low point for me as well. you're showing video of it right now. seeing the despair, and we had really high medical needs of our people there, it was -- it was horrible. and i'm so thankful that this ordeal is getting close to being over. getting people back in our homes, back in more secure sense of place is so important, and i just -- i'm just so grateful and thankful to the firefighters and the california emergency operations people. and the law enforcement officers who came from all over the state and have protected my community. i just am unbelievably grateful. >> mayor wallace, thanks for taking time to speak with us. i kno

in fact, california's caldor fire reaching the lake tahoe basin now. abc's kayna whitworth on the front lines tonight. >> reporter: tonight, the caldor fire racing toward south lake tahoe. tens of thousands fleeing the area. >> there is only one way out of town and it's a parking lot out there. >> reporter: the fire spreading rpidly. the embers that are flying off those flames, so those can start new fires. in nearby christmas valley, homes surrounded by flames. firefighters rushed up with here with their hose to put out this tree that was on fire, had fallen over, because look, we're just a few yards away here from an entire neighborhood in christmas valley that's being threatened right now. the blaze already damaging over 700 structures and is only 16% contained. several counties in california and nevada a state of emergency. david, this is currently the biggest wildfire threat to south lake tahoe in its history. and you're seeing how the wind has really kicked up these flames on this hillside here. that's incredibly rough terrain as it just complete

california state parks in the tahoe basin are closed indefinitely because of the cal door fire. state park officials say they are working with the office of emergency services, cal fire and land managers on keeping people safe and saving cultural artifacts. the u. s forest service is also closed all national forest statewide to limit the chances of new fire. starting those parks are expected to reopen by mid september. earlier on the floor. we talked to barbara wood from the red cross there, helping out some of the 59,000 people have been evacuated. she said that she's amazed at how resilient people are in the face of the disaster. today. i talked to a woman who's a single mother of six ranging in the age from not quite 2 to 15, and she's been in this. she's been evacuated from her home than for more than two weeks. they slept in their suburban for two nights, which i cannot figure out how how seven people could do that, until they found the shelter that was available and they've been there ever since. and she's very happy because there is word that it's possible. if the weather

that's the first view you get as you come around echo peak, and coming around into the lake tahoe basin. it's sad to see that happening this morning. as well as all the flooding we have seen moving over towards pennsylvania. this is just homes underwater, just historic flooding, unprecedented in some of the areas that we have seen. in some spots, over 13 inches of rain of the remanence of what was hurricane ida moving all the way up through pennsylvania, and this morning clearing out parts of the northeast. we can see where it is now as the rain is moving out of maine, and we are going to seat clearing out as we get a chance to see the water recede and clean up today. on the western shore of lake tahoe, not close to the fires, but can you see all of the smoke the sun is rising through this morning. thought it was a stunning view this morning and very telling of what we are going to see in the bay area as we get more smoke coming in. our smoke index, our outlook shows we will see much more unhealthy smoke moving in, especially for the inland areas. this is the case going throughout the w

intense and erratic winds pushing the caldor fire deep entire the lake tahoe basin.ation orders on the nevada side of the lake and more than 50,000 people have now been forced out of their homes as these flames rage on. >> a lot happening at this late hour. firefighters doing whatever they can to protect homes and cabins. before sunset, these bulldozers were busy along the trail. businesses as well. the snow making machines are cranking at heavenly, the world class ski resort, trying to wet things down. several resorts potentially in the fire's path. >> cheryl hurd joins us south of lake tahoe. another nerve-racking night. >> reporter: it is. there are road blocks at every entryway into south lake tahoe making sure no one comes in. this fire is surrounding this tourist destination. >> reporter: an eerie sight. a waffle flames creeping over the ridge toward south lake tahoe. the caldor fire has destroyed close to 500 homes and tonight is only 18% contained. >> scary. just all i can say. you know, got everybody out but it's heart breaking. very unfortunate. >> reporter

the fact that this fire has burned over echo summit into the tahoe basin is unprecedented. the fire has never crested the sierra nevada in recorded history. not until this summer. the first time was the dixie fire. the second time the caldor fire. burning here behind me. reporting live here atop the echo summit, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we can see how dry it is out there as that fire continues to rage on this morning. those conditions out there in lake tahoe are changing by the minute as we saw in bob's report. meteorologist kari hall you have been very busy following all the conditions there. bob was talking about it a little bit but how are conditions looking out there this morning? >> usually the early morning hours are the best time. sad to see that spot where you come around the bend and gets the first view of lake tahoe and now next time we go it's going to look a lot different. all of this land continues to burn and so we have a fire detection at work where it puts yellow boxes where the areas have already burned and the red shows the active fires and the p

some people allowed back into their homes in parts of the tahoe basin. not everyone has a home to return to. alyssa goard joins us from meyers. it's difficult for a homeowner to come home and see that. >> reporter: according to cal fire, there is dozens of cabins along this road completely destroyed by the caldor fire. take a look. stark reality is apparent here. you can see all that remains of many homes are the stone chimneys. from the air and on the ground, firefighters are curbing the caldor fire's growth. which means most evacuation orders are lifted. >> want to come to your own bed, be home. >> reporter: and south lake tahoe residents are starting to come back. >> this is what we want. >> reporter: most employees at this grocery store were evacuated last week but spent holiday weekend working around the clock to reopen today. produce shelves are sparse but no shortage of community pride. >> shows that tahoe, a small town, and we all unite at end of the day, all family. >> reporter: but further south and east of the lake, fire is still far from over

especially around the tahoe basin. you get different policy interplays between different counties, and things that we have in california in terms of the climate change policies we have can vary five to ten miles. again, all the different counties could have different guidelines for climate change and locally with forest management between what's happening in the state. >> i know what you do is challenging. just to california, i wish we could say it's our problem, but this is a western regional problem, a global problem. >> we saw the numbers rob had. but when you look at the weather pattern overall, there's definitely something that's been changing over the past several years. it's these stronger areas of high pressure. what this does is pushes the storm track to the north, keeping the rain away, and we've often been left with dry and windy systems. this can be enhanced by la nina, we had that last year, and there's a chance we could see la nina return when we head to next winter. when it comes to the trend, you can se

cal fire is getting the upper hand on the two huge wildfires and it is burning near the tahoe basin. today mandatory evacuations in southlake tahoe were reduced to warnings. devin fehely has the latest. >> reporter: it is little by little and there is a long ways to go before it continues in a good effort has been made. >> reporter: herculean effort to slow the massive caldor fire down and then hold the line preventing it from burning one of northern california's gems, southlake tahoe. >> cautiously optimistic that we will continue to keep the caldor fire out of the populated areas of the south lake tahoe region and communities nearby and we have to continue to make sure all of those hotspots, several miles from the fire line are out. >> reporter: it was embers driven by the wind during the red flag warning this week that fueled the march toward the lake and conditions have improved and containment is up with 43% of the caldor fire and 56% for the dixie fire to the north and evacuation orders, however, are still in place. >> you want to get those people back and we know how much touri

firefighters are setting up a new base camp at heavenly ski resort to protect the populated areas in the tahoe basin. in the morning cal fire briefing, a fire behavior analyst talked about the real threat today. wind driven by the steep terrain creating more spot fires even in areas where the fire already blew through. >> all dried out and only going to take one tree or one bush in there to get the whole island going. >> reporter: some relief for communities on the western edge of the fire in el dorado oint. no allowed to come back home. as for the rest of the 50,000 evacuees in this massive fire zone, no target date at this point as to when they may be able to return. i'm anne makovec for cbs news. >>> our team coverage continues now with reporter rachel wolf from the sister station kovr. >> reporter: with evacuation orders easing, many who have been camping slit rally during this time period are heading back home. we met phil and kathy at green valley church. about ten days ago? they had been evacuated from their pines home because of the caldor fire and their rv is back and they are back at home

the tahoe basin. it's all engulfed in that bright orange haze. the poor air quality in the top of region has only made the firefight. of course much more difficult and it amount of aircraft, if any, that can be put in the area. you can see you can't fight to put out a fire. meteorologist dave spahr joins us now with more on the weather. >> kind of jonathan, good evening, everybody. and we continue to monitor where that to pollution really being generated by these fires is it's pretty much to the southeast of where that wind flow pattern is we'd expected to be that way is a brings up the particulate matter and it gets dumped on the eastern side. there's the carson ridge here and on the western side of it. temperatures are much cooler in the 50's you get on the east side of it into this valley in hure and temperatures are much warmer. you get a little compression heating. they go over the hills and then they come back down. into the valley in air compresses and warms. a little but on both sides, it's very dry, which is why we've had that red flag w

mile for the tahoe, the usually packed beaches and casinos are empty and all state parks in the tahoe basin now closed. reporter william la jeunesse has more on what will be an unusually quiet labor day weekend on the south shore crews here in northern california are scrambling to get a handle on the calle door fire. this is only the second fire in history to cross the sierra nevada mountains and is now threatening more than 34,000 structures after burning through hundreds of homes. we're in there actively fire fighting and defending the structures that are in there. the fire burn through their extremely fast, extremely hot and we did the best that we could, but the weather is just not cooperating. forecasters say extremely low humidity and winds gusting up to 30 miles an hour are expected through wednesday. perfect conditions for the fire to keep spreading. it created what's called a active crown fire run where the fire actually goes from the treetop to treetop when it does that those member cast that it throws out are going over a mile in distance. mandatory evacuations are now in effect

and the fact it crossed the mountain barrier and entered the tahoe basin, normally it was an obstacle. and now we see that. and the fact that we were able to forecast that and to capture that in the model is really exciting. >> and it really is a forecasting game changer. you see over my shoulder be the progression of the caldor fire. that's what the model was able to capture, and also extreme fire behavior, when they start to exhibit pyrocumulus type of behavior. that's when they create their own activity and winds. it also shows how it is generating smoke on a hyperlocal level, it's those type of tools that are making this model very interesting for us as meteorologists, the public health for smoke pollution and for fire weather behavior. >> that technology seems to be very useful. we want to show you how much swlt dor fire has grown in the past two and a half weeks. it start sfwlath grizzly flats area sbleds mainly east, burn skbloifblgt 50 near kyburz, then jumping highway 50. it jumped 89 and now burning near echo summit and getting closer to south lake tahoe. this fire has now b
