apparently it happened in late march as the commuter jet was approaching tallahassee, florida. joining me now, government regulation correspondent miles o'brien. so renee, why is this happening, and why are we just hearing about it now? >> good question, a potential deadly situation, a drone nearly crashed into a plane and could have taken it down. the faa is describing it as a near collision some 2300 feet over florida near the tallahassee florida. of course that is well above the typical altitude of a private drone. as far as what it looked like the commercial pilot described it as a fixed wing aircraft that looked like a model replica of a phantom jet. we do know this sort of near collision is rare. but as far as why it is taking so long i did ask the faa just that. we should note that it came to light because the faa official was speaking at a drone conference just yesterday and started to discuss it. so it didn't come by way of a press release. when asked why we didn't know about it before because the incident happened in march the faa could not immediately answer, anderso

it happened 2300 feet in the air near tallahassee, florida. the near miss occurred in march, but the incident is obviously just coming to light tonight. jack nicholas broke the story for "the wall street journal." how did it happen? >> that's a good question. and that's what many people are trying to figure out. what we know right new and what an faa official revealed on thursday is that a us airways regional jet pilot was flying, approaching into tallahassee and saw a -- what would be a drone, what probably is a model aircraft come as close as according to the faa official that he had hit it. now later inspection of the aircraft revealed that they had not touched. but two aircraft coming this close airborne is extraordinary, because under faa regulation, aircraft should be at least one thousand feet apart vertically and several miles apart horizontally. so obviously this is an extraordinary incident. >> extraordinary. and how big of a danger could the drone pose to the airliner? is this something that could bring down a jet? >> absolutely. if

a near midair collision involving a passenger jet and a drone in tallahassee florida in march. usairways is still investigating the matter but the pilot of the jet confirming he had to take some last-minute evasive measures to avoid hitting an unmanned aircraft that looked like a miniature f4 phantom jet. to our aviation watcher michael boyd on why this might not be a miracle on the hudson but was close and is a wakeup call. michael, i'm told at last count there are better than 6,000 of these drones flying around there. some in all shapes and sizes, some really tiny, some pretty big. are they regulateed where they can fly? >> not at all. the faa says they're trying to regulate it but what is the difference between where we break it down from a toy this big and a drone that might be the size of a kitchen table. any of those could be dangerous and be used as terrorist weapons. so, they need to be controlled somehow but we have to make a determination what is a toy and what could be something that can take down an airplane. >> what is she size which you say -- especially a plane a
