and the outcome of contests from tallahassee to topeka may have even more to do with your life. dan's been out on the road and here to explain why. how many competitive races are we talking about, dan? >> there are 36 states with gubernatorial races. and you could say about half, actually, are somewhat competitive. and charlie cook's cook political report at this point puts 11 of those races as pure tossups and another republican held seat in jeopardy and leaning democratic. the most interesting thing, though, gwen, is the number of incumbent republican and democratic governors who are in trouble. normally what we see is it's open seats where you have the greatest competition. but there are probably seven or eight republican incumbents who are in really tough races. and three democrats who are in really tough races. gwen: you were in colorado with john hicken looper one of the top democrats. >> i was. i was there earlier in the week. governor hickenlooper won fairly easily four years ago and had weak opposition and won without any great trouble. he came in with a kind of a quirk

on august 28th, 1955, 14-year-old cammed pill's body is found in the tallahassee river, up hill had said by baby to the wife of a white shopowner and was going to be lynched because of that. his body is going to be put on display on the cover of jet magazine, the african-american working-class magazine of the postwar period and that is going to galvanize a whole generation of civil rights activists including stokely carmichael. 1957 is little rock central high school and that crisis that results in mob violence against young people trying to integrate, february 1st, 1960, is the start of the sit in amusement in north carolina where four black students demand equal service and that will spark hundreds of demonstrations across the united states but importantly it will spark the creation of an easter weekend of 1960, the student nonviolent coordinating committee and we have heroic figures from snake who are still alive today. joanne mulholland is here, we have judy richardson, congressman john lewis, and stokely carmichael was part of the student nonviolent coordinating committee as well. 1

it's a very polarized district, in and around tallahassee. you have a strong college student and professor vote in addition to a strong african-american vote. in the western end of this district, on the panhandle, panama city, bay county, a very republican area. president obama has lost this district twice. republican steve southerland beat a blue dog democrat in 2010 to win the seat. now that he has had a couple of years in office, he's made a couple of mistakes, particularly on women's issues. he earned some notoriety earlier this year for holding a fundraiser that was closed to women. it was a men only fundraiser, where the invitation: donors not to keep the missus -- the invitation told donors not to keep the missus up waiting. a beloved officeholder. she is running as her father's daughter. she is running as an outsider who has never run for anything before. she has run a superior campaign. this is one of the few instances across the country where a democratic challenger is gaining traction. she's ahead in most of the polling we've seen
