it's clear from talking to her that tamerlan was influenced by tamerlan.merlan put pressure on her telling her to cover up her hair and they both chose this route together. it's a shame that misha seemed more competent obviously, the confusion is going to be precisely who was the contact that she and her son, tamerlan had. what were they both mutualctual i think. it appears tamerlan was here last year in russia than a different period of time. she came in the middle of the year in summer and kind of switched out with tamerlan, taking over the job of looking after the father here. so many questions here, certainly. let's bear in mind how she talked about how the fbi came to talk to tm and her about her eldest son's fbi said radicalization. >> they said that they think tamerlan is kind of a little in the radical side of islam and that they just don't want -- like they are keeping their eye on, you know, the boys, the young boys, like tamerlan. so any bombing, any, like, explosions wouldn't happen in america. >> so they said -- >> on the streets, like, on the

this is tamerlan and his siblings.r dzhokhar who would grow up to be his partner in terrorism. tamerlan moved to america from a poor and dangerous part of russia at age 14. he went to a good high school and showed a lot of promise as a boxer. but things started to go wrong not long after he graduated from high school. this was a mug shot when he was arrested for allegedly slapping his then girlfriend. at the time he told police he was unemployed. he later met and married another woman named catherine. her friends have reportedly said tamerlan was abusive and controlling with her, too. it was around this time that tamerl tamerlan, who was never much keen on religion before started to take a deep interest in islam. >> what's happened is a terrible thing, but i know that my kids have nothing to do with it. i know it. i am mother. >> reporter: her mother says she pushed him in this direction because she wanted him to stop smoking and drinking so much. >> somebody radicalized them, but it's not my brother. >> reporter: but

the mother and tamerlan, we have breaking news right now.just learning that the russians also asked the united states to check up on the brother's mother. a crucial new development tonight. her name was actually added to a database called t.i.d.e., the terrorist identities data mart environment. her name was added at the same time her son tamerlan's name was also added to that database. obviously, this opens up the investigation even further. i want to go back to nick payson walsh is standing by. you had a chance to speak with the mother. any idea why she made authorities suspicious? >> reporter: there was, of course, the outstanding arrest warms due to a shoplifting charge. that's obviously not it. if you listen to her describe how the whole family was converting towards a more devout form of islam, she makes out tamerlan was to inspire misha and asked her to cover up her hair and the son influenced even the mother. so you heard just a moment ago she talked about they had a sense of shame when they were confronted with how devout his faith

one of the victims was a close friend of tamerlan tsarnaev.ow investigators are looking closely at the case for any possible connection. >>> welcome back. we're live in boston tonight. investigators in massachusetts are taking a new look at an unsolved murder case from back in september of 2011 in light of what they're hearing about the dead bombing suspect, tamerlan tsarnaev. three people were killed back then in september of 2011, including tamerlan's friend and sparring partner. the district attorney said at the time that it was not a random crime, that the victims and killers appear to have known each other. there were never any arrests and tamerlan wasn't ever interviewed by police. another oddity, marijuana was sprinkled on the dead bodies of the three people. their throats were slit. as we said at the top, there's new evidence that tamerlan may have been dealing drugs. authorities do not know for sure if there is any connection but it does heighten sort of suspicion about the murder case. debor deborah feyerick investigates. >> reporter
