joining us now is nbc's tammy leitner. she is live at the scene. tammy, what is the latest there? lawrence, sorry, we were moving our shot because yet another person has been arrested. i would say at least a dozen people have been arrested at this point. we've been out here for an hour and a half. and we've seen probably 200 riot officers show up. they formed lines on both sides of the intersection. there were about 300 protesters when we got out here. they were breaking windows of businesses. they were kicking in police vehicles. we saw one police officer get hurt. and he was helped away by fellow comrades. as i mentioned, about 12 people arrested. one more person is being arrested right now. for the most part, protesters have walked up to the line of police officers and not gone any farther than that. but what we can see from our advantage point here is still about 100 protesters on our side. sorry, there is still tear gas in the air. they set off about 12 canisters since we've been here, as well as flash-bangs which are used to stun and disperse the crowd. lawrence? >> tammy, y

i want to get over to tammy leitner live in lower manhattan.ou ear close to the location you and i were talking from yesterday and that's where that first scene is at. that explosion. and the mood on the ground, a lot of folks probably thinking who did this and why? >> reporter: you know, richard, it's actually a very odd mood up here, because you've had new yorkers and tourists stopping by all afternoon. in addition to the media, you've had people stopping by, taking selfies, taking videos. some are just curious, others are very concerned. it may look like business as usual, but it is anything but. the roads are still closed for about four blocks in this area. they're allowing only people that live here and can show i.d. to go back into the houses. investigators are still out here. mayor said earlier this is going to be a very slow process. they'll still be out here for several hours today. the governor of new york also spoke and talked about this being a nightmare. let's listen to what he had to say. >> whoever placed these bombs, we will fin

nbc's tammy leitner is live in new york city. mmy, you're close to that location, that picture i was showing earlier of 23rd street. and what looks to be about 100 pieces of information or pieces of evidence that law enforcement is trying to peace together right now. that street's closed down. that's got to be leaving a lot of residents concerned about who and why did this happen. >> reporter: absolutely, richard pap lot of concern. new yorker, tourists. they've all been showing up all afternoon to figure out and get a glimpse of what is going on. they're allowing some residents to go back to their homes, the blast happened about a half block behind me. we do know there's a third location where in fact investigators are collecting evidence. that's less than a mile from here, 39th and madison. there was a motorist driving along. he called 911 and he said, i was driving by the block where the blast happened last night and i believe my car was hit with shrapnel, what should i do? 911 operator told him to pull over immediately until f

tammy leitner, among the members of our team quick to respond to this. she's been outside of this architectural landmark, but right now it's a collapsed version of its former self inside. tammy, i think you join me in expressing relief that this was not worse than it was. >> reporter: yeah, and you know, that's a hard thing to say when there's already 100 people injured. yes, there could have been a lot more fatalities than what we heard, just one. the one thing that's become really clear, we've talked to numerous people that were on that train and that platform, was that this train did not slow down as it was approaching the hoboken station. normally it slows to about 3 to 4 miles an hour when approaching the station. it became clear to those on the platform that they could see it barrelling towards them. there's a steel bumper at the end of the platform. that is there if, heaven forbid, anything should happen. in this case, that steel bumper was krumplcrumpled and tossed a like a tin can because this train did not stop. that's how fast it was going. we

nbc's tammy leitner made her way to hoboken as well. where are you? what do you see? what do you hear? tammy, you with me? >> reporter: yes, i can barely hear you but i just talked to a railroad worker down there. the crash happened on track four. he was walking towards track four and he said he could hear the crash from 100 feet away. he said normally when a train is coming into the station, it's only going 3 or 4 miles an hour. that's why he automatically assumed and asked, did something happen to this engineer? at this point, we still don't know but the train was barrelling in and normally, they go about 3 to 4 miles an hour when coming into the station. and there's also a steel gurney bumper block he described that would normally stop the train if something happened, and in this case, obviously didn't. he described running over to the train and said people were buried underneath rocks. they were carrying people off the train, trying to get people, big people out of the rocks there and said he picked up one girl in 20s. badly injured. describes the injuries as dozen

ten people arrested since we've been here. >> tammy leitner, nbc news correspondent, tammy, thank youble reporting from right there on the scene. a lot of people you can see on the street, just on the sidewalk walking by these cameras. you can see the effect of just a lot of tear gas that has been used in this intersection tonight in downtown charlotte. here with us on set from "the new york times" who i first met on the tv while we were covering protests in ferguson, missouri. you have covered a lot of these types of events over the course of the past couple of years. what is your reaction to what you're seeing tonight in charlotte? >> i think this is really a ratcheting up of people being fed up. i interviewed the family of terrance crutcher today. they said they told their son he had marched in black lives matter protests. they had spoken about the fact that he needed to have his hands up. he needed to put his hands on his own car. and that family was saying even with that he was shot. and the idea there is really no instructions to give your children that can keep them safe in int

nbc's tammy leitner is near the scene in new york where it all happened. tammy, what's the latest from there? >> reporter: good morning. still a very active scene out here. blocks and blocks to the west and north of me still closed off. there were actually two crime scenes. the explosion happened just about half a block behind me. on friday night, lots of locals walking around here. one described it as a bomb. he ran outside, he knew it was a bomb. he said windows were blown out on both sides of the street. he could see people had fallen to the ground from the explosion and were running. obviously a very scary situation. we're expecting an update here in a few hours. hopefully they'll have more information about that explosion, the device that went off, as well as a second scene where a pressure cooker was discovered. back to you. >> what do authorities know about the surveillance video of a dumpster that may be providing some clues? >> reporter: so last night the mayor came out and he said this was an intentional act. something that may have led him to say

all right, tammy leitner, thank you very much. lets go to rahima, i know many are treated. what do we know of the injuries. >> reporter: we are talking about cuts and bruises and some broken bones that were brought here to the hospital. we got updates from the hospital telling us they had 123 people who were brought to the hospital and most of them have been released and seven are still in stable condition. they're treating all that they can concerned of mental health at this point. this was sent to us and as we talk to some of the patients that were left, this was a frightening moment, one woman told me she was going to die and she's five-month pregnant. a portion of the ceiling came on her head and she ended up getting four stitches. she was amazed of the kindness of strangers. someone she did not know lifted her and threw the window of the train to another stranger who helped her out and away from the crash. she said all that she could think of now is to say thank you to people that she does not know. they help saved her life. another woman i spoke to, she took the train

nbc's tammy leitner is live in hoboken with the latest and we've been told the engineer has been releasedith injuries is going to be interviewed today. >> reporter: that's right. at sop poime point today, he wi interviewed. he's a key to this but black boxes are key. they recovered one from the rear train and another one in the front car. that still is buried under the roof which collapsed, so they will be getting to that. this will be key because they can tell the speed the train was going. brakes applied and mechanical error and was there possibly a human error? the engineer tommy gallagher, 48 years old was injured. he had to be pulled out of the crumpled front car. he's been with the new jersey transit, we've learned, since he was 19 years old. there were no red flags. no past medical or criminal history that alerted officials to a problem that may have been there. they will be interviewing him and asking him key questions like, did you sleep the night before? how much sleep did you get? were you taking any medication? were you distracted? let's talk about the injured. we know there a

i want to bring in nbc's tammy leitner. she was in the middle of the protests last night. wanted you to wake up early even though i saw you on tv very late last night because you were there in the thick of it. talk me through how tense it was. when you see the police in riot gear, it's scary. >> yeah, you know, stephanie, things escalated very quickly. this started as a vigil. a peaceful vigil at about 7:00, and the protesters then started walking. and they ended up about a third of a mime from where we are right now and around 8:30 is when things started escalating. you saw protesters throwing bottles. you saw them attacking vans, trying to break out the windows. destroying buildings, breaking the windows, actually, i'm standing in front of a broken window right now from last night's damage. >> tammy, when and how did that change happen? when do you go from a peaceful march to throwing bottles, breaking windows, and someone getting shot? >> you know, it escalated. it was very peaceful when they started marching, but when they got to the downtown area, which is about a thi

. >> and nbc's tammy leitner has been in hoboken all day. she joins us from there live. st tammy, they don't want to speculate about causes. what kind of evidence has emerged right now? what can you piece together so far, anything? >> reporter: hey, steve, as you heard the governor say, they don't want to speculate, but there is one person who can explain what happened on that train, and that is the engineer. we know the engineer was critically injured. he is still in the hospital. but he is answering questions and cooperating with law enforcement. also, one person who was killed, we learned, was a woman. she was on the platform, she was not on the train. she was hit with falling debris. also 108 people injured. most of them were on the train. taken to local hospitals, some by ambulance, some walked in. everybody that was on the train that we spoke to and on the platform described the train coming in at a high rate of speed to the platform, but passengers tell me they did not have enough time to brace for impact. we spoke with an 18-year-old college student who was on tha

nbc's tammy leitner is in charlotte.hat kind of response is the release of that cell phone video getting there? >> reporter: you know, francis, i think most of the people we spoke to, they have seen that video, but it raises more questions than answers for people. and therefore, people are still demanding to see the release of the police video. we're talking about the body cam and the dash cam. now about 600 to 700 protesters showed up last night for the fourth night. we were there marching with them the entire time. it was peaceful, there was no violence. they marched from the city center to the police department, through residential neighborhoods and finally on to interstate 277. they shut it down for a brief period. they walked for about a mile on there. last night was different than previous nights in that charlotte police were there walking with the protesters. there were bike cops out in the front, and there were actually uniformed police officers walking with the protesters. some of the protesters carried signs th

nbc's tammy leitner joins us live in charlotte outside the football stadium where these protests have. what's happening where you are? >> reporter: fans have been trickling out for about 20 minutes and it's fairly calm mostly because the protesters have left. they've moved down the road. i believe we have a live picture of them marching a short while ago. they went over to the omni hotel. there was a brief scuffle between protesters and police, things seemed to be heating up with some of the protesters, getting a little hot and agitated. but for the most part things have been calm. wim the deputy chief and she told me that they had a strategy today on how to keep everybody safe. it seemed to have worked. vicky foster, tell me about the strategy. >> our main goal obviously was for the safety of our fans and citizens as well as for our protesters. our plan today was just to have traffic going in two main directions so when our patrons came out, they knew exactly where to go, to have our protesters in an area where they could demonstrate and they were able to do that, and safely get them

i'm going back to tammy leitner live at the scene. we can't stress enough this is an ongoing situation. a search and rescue. estimated 250 people on the train. there are at least three confirmed fatalities. more than 100 people set to be injured. some of those critically injured. tammy is standing by in hoboken, new jersey. what can you tell us? >> reporter: tamron, as that person you were just speaking with mentioned, nobody saw this train slowing down. both passengers and rail workers in the station said the train was not slowing down at all. normally i'm told they go 3 to 4 miles per hour when approaching the station. there's also something called a steel gurney, essentially, a bumper that will block the train if something should happen and in this case, a rail worker who i spoke with that's been on the job for 34 years, he told me that this train plowed right through it. it did not slow down. as you heard from people who were there, a lot of screaming. a lot of people that were injured. there were people actually buried underneath

tammy leitner is here with more on this intrepid museum.ible as we look at this. you have some interesting context here. how is this ship involved in a space race? >> as many people don't know, a lot of famous astronauts involved in the space race early on were on board this ship. nasa engineers designed capsules that landed in the ocean. the intrepid was the recovery vehicle to go out and get those capsules and so the usa naughts, in turn, were on board here. the shuffle enterprise is downstairs. >> it's amazing to look around and walk around and see these historic planes and memorabilia on this ship that's now this museum. one of our analysts brings her son here every week because it's fascinating. >> it was essentially a floating city. they had 3,000 people on it. it would go out to sea for months. everything they need to sustain themselves for months. >> it must be fun to be hanging out here today. >> great assignment. >> i'm jealous. we're going to be here all day long getting ready for the forum at 8:00 eastern tonight. tammy leitner,

tammy leitner at the hoboken train station. can you tell us, there have been some conflicting reports about whether people were still trapped in that train or perhaps in rubble at the station. do we know whether that's true? >> reporter: we are hearing everybody is out of the station. the one thing we don't know is whether the station is structurally safe at this point. it's 100-year-old station. let me give you a live look, step out of the way so you can see all of the emergency crews working back there. now, keep in mind, we've spoken with people that were on the train. we've spoken with people on the platform as well as rail workers. all of them said the same thing. this train did not slow down. it came barrelling into this hoboken station here. normally a train would come into the station at 3 or 4 miles an hour. that was not the case this time. passengers on the train described a sudden impact that they did not have time to brace, even though it became apparent very quickly that the train was not going to stop. the roof co

for the latest on the investigation and the evening commute, we are now joined by nbc's tammy leitner in hoboken, nnk. tammy? >> reporter: hey, melissa, investigators are out here right now and will likely be out here working throughout the evening and most likely for the next seven to ten days try to piece together what happened. this is what we do know. at 8:45 a.m., it was a busy morning, a commuter train came barreling through here, and it plowed through a barrier that was meant to stop it. on impact, passengers in the train were thrown. the train actually popped up on to a platform and that's when debris came crashing down. one woman, a local woman, a 34-year-old woman was killed. we're told passengers kicked out the emergency window and crawled out. other passengers were crawling on the ground. wires were hanging from the ceiling. there was twisted metal everywhere. people were crawling to safety. about 108 people were injured and transported to area hospitals. now, this is what the ntsb has ahead of them. they've recovered two data recorders from the front and the back of the t

joining me now, nbc's tammy leitner who is at the scene. tammy, good morning to you. what's the latest on this investigation? >> reporter: good morning, alex. still a very active crime scene. they've allowed cars now to go down fifth avenue, but the blocks behind me they're still investigating. i'm told residents aren't even allowed back in their homes and i'm here in a witness named jonathan avador. jonathan, you were across the street when the explosion went off. what happened? >> i was on south side of 23rd street. i was in my apartment. i have a patio and i had the patio door open, and a loud boom followed by the mirror crashing off my wall. it was startling and frightening. >> reporter: did you know immediately that an explosion was because of a bomb? >> it sounded and felt like everything that i thought a bomb would sound and feel like, but it was a little -- i was a little bit in disbelief because i thought to myself, who would plant the bomb on 23rd street between sixth and seventh avenue just given it's not a very crowded area where people are hanging out out

tammy leitner joins me from the site of the crash in hoboken. you tell us about what we expect to see? >> reporter: keep in mind this is the first full day investigators have been able to get in there and go through it. they recovered the black box from the rear of the train. there is another black box in the front car. they have not been able to get through the mangled mess of steel to retrieve it. they are going to tell them what speed the train was going, if the brakes were applied, if there was a mechanical error and the question of human error. we now know the engineer tommy gallagher, 48 years old, has been with the new jersey transit since he was 19. a lot of experience. ntsb will be interviewing him today. some of the things they are going to ask is how much sleep did you get the night before? are you on any medications? were you distracted? there are no red flags that would have alerted them to something but there is a lot of investigating to be done. hallie? >> thanks so much. in other news the oklahoma police officer charged in the sh
