joining us now is nbc's tammy leitner. she is live at the scene. tammy, what is the latest there? lawrence, sorry, we were moving our shot because yet another person has been arrested. i would say at least a dozen people have been arrested at this point. we've been out here for an hour and a half. and we've seen probably 200 riot officers show up. they formed lines on both sides of the intersection. there were about 300 protesters when we got out here. they were breaking windows of businesses. they were kicking in police vehicles. we saw one police officer get hurt. and he was helped away by fellow comrades. as i mentioned, about 12 people arrested. one more person is being arrested right now. for the most part, protesters have walked up to the line of police officers and not gone any farther than that. but what we can see from our advantage point here is still about 100 protesters on our side. sorry, there is still tear gas in the air. they set off about 12 canisters since we've been here, as well as flash-bangs which are used to stun and disperse the crowd. lawrence? >> tammy, y

for the latest on the investigation and the evening commute, we are now joined by nbc's tammy leitner in hoboken, nnk. tammy? >> reporter: hey, melissa, investigators are out here right now and will likely be out here working throughout the evening and most likely for the next seven to ten days try to piece together what happened. this is what we do know. at 8:45 a.m., it was a busy morning, a commuter train came barreling through here, and it plowed through a barrier that was meant to stop it. on impact, passengers in the train were thrown. the train actually popped up on to a platform and that's when debris came crashing down. one woman, a local woman, a 34-year-old woman was killed. we're told passengers kicked out the emergency window and crawled out. other passengers were crawling on the ground. wires were hanging from the ceiling. there was twisted metal everywhere. people were crawling to safety. about 108 people were injured and transported to area hospitals. now, this is what the ntsb has ahead of them. they've recovered two data recorders from the front and the back of the t

joining me now, nbc's tammy leitner who is at the scene. tammy, good morning to you. what's the latest on this investigation? >> reporter: good morning, alex. still a very active crime scene. they've allowed cars now to go down fifth avenue, but the blocks behind me they're still investigating. i'm told residents aren't even allowed back in their homes and i'm here in a witness named jonathan avador. jonathan, you were across the street when the explosion went off. what happened? >> i was on south side of 23rd street. i was in my apartment. i have a patio and i had the patio door open, and a loud boom followed by the mirror crashing off my wall. it was startling and frightening. >> reporter: did you know immediately that an explosion was because of a bomb? >> it sounded and felt like everything that i thought a bomb would sound and feel like, but it was a little -- i was a little bit in disbelief because i thought to myself, who would plant the bomb on 23rd street between sixth and seventh avenue just given it's not a very crowded area where people are hanging out out

tammy leitner joins me from the site of the crash in hoboken. you tell us about what we expect to see? >> reporter: keep in mind this is the first full day investigators have been able to get in there and go through it. they recovered the black box from the rear of the train. there is another black box in the front car. they have not been able to get through the mangled mess of steel to retrieve it. they are going to tell them what speed the train was going, if the brakes were applied, if there was a mechanical error and the question of human error. we now know the engineer tommy gallagher, 48 years old, has been with the new jersey transit since he was 19. a lot of experience. ntsb will be interviewing him today. some of the things they are going to ask is how much sleep did you get the night before? are you on any medications? were you distracted? there are no red flags that would have alerted them to something but there is a lot of investigating to be done. hallie? >> thanks so much. in other news the oklahoma police officer charged in the sh
