tamron hall, "as the wicked watch."e a novel. why did you not go with a memoir or something current affairs driven? >> because it wasn't interesting to me. i thought about writing a mini memoir of when i first got fired from the "today" show or left the "today" show to building this talk show which include harvey weinstein and all the other stunning stories i encountered. i said, i'm not ready for all that. before all that drama happened, there were two stories, in 1997 when i was a recorder in dallas and chicago, within that year, i'd covered the deaths of two girls, both 11 years old, one white, one black. when you're a reporter and you get a picture of someone and the family says here's a picture for the news and you have this kid and you're studying them and start talking to friends and are outside the school or in the case of chicago you're in the neighborhood and people are telling you how adorable and wonderful she is, for me, the kind of person i am, i felt like i knew them, and from '97 unil even now, it would

tamron has written her debut novel "as the wicked watch."on, welcome to "gma." >> thank you. good to be here. >> you're a very busy woman. you're hosting your talk show. you're being a mom to moses. you write this novel, and by the way, we should mention it was just named in "usa today's" five books not to miss. how was the process? making it all happen. congratulations. >> oh, wow. the process, there's no plan. there's no process when you have a toddler, and i remember the advice george gave me about letting them sleep in the bed at night. he slept in the bed last night, and that's why i'm achy and breaky, and like the rest of you, we're juggling a lot of things like the people watching at home and this book has been, something that simmered inside of me for a long time. >> we're journalists and we have had decades' long careers and we're used to writing stories, but writing, how is this different? how does this compare to writing as a journalist versus writing as an author here? >> it was a very different experience. jordan manning. we men

but let's talk now with tamron taylor, the mother of the 10-year-old who was arrested and the taylorust tell us about your daughter's arrest and what preceded it. >> well, thank you. well, the day started out like any other normal day. we definitely did not expect for it to end as it did. but we woke up, prepared for school, prepared for work. i dropped her off to school. i went to work. eventually i received a call from the elementary explaining that the children were having a dispute, a drawing, and the possibility of police being called. and i said, no, don't do that. i'm on my way. but when i arrived at the school, the police were already there. it was hard to navigate the situation because the very first greeting to me from one of the officers was, sometimes some parents just take things out of proportion. from there we were led into a room i'm assuming to discuss the situation. however, what happened previous to lead up to where we were at that moment was never explained to me. so i really didn't know what was going on at that point in time. i did ask for the whereabouts of my
