we can talk now to our correspondent tania page who is live in the mozambiquian capitol. are a lot of international observers there to monitor how this event goes. how is voting going? are people turning out enthusiastically? >> reporter: they are, absolutely. but we're near the end of the voting day if you would like. polls close in just about 45 minutes, so the queue behind me as dwindled to a handful of people. a while ago i was talking to the leader you just mentioned and he said he heard one of the opposition strong holds that they had run out of ballot papers, which he thought was quite suspicious, so some concerns certainly there. but he did say because of the electoral reform he managed to force through this new peace deal we signed with the government last month, that he thought that this election had the best chance of any since independence of truly being free and fair. >> and you are mentioning the figure who has been prominent in mozambique's history since 1975, and his late appearance on to the scene has thrown a lot of the predict shuns. how does it look fo

tania page is in the mozambique can capitol. >> reporter: the end of the day here, and no widespread of irregularities, but the opposition leader was telling me that he had heard in a central province they had run out of ballots and some of the polling stations opened several hours late. he found that very suspicious. it's one of his strong holds, but he did say this election had the best chance possible of being truly free because of the electoral forms he had managed to squeeze out of the government in signing a new peace deal last year. he spent about 18 months in hiding, waging a low-level insurgency african selling the original peace deal. he has seen a resurgence in his popularity. but the governing party's candidate is still the favorite. he needs to achieve 51% in order to avoid a runoff and to avoid facing a united opposition vote. >>> now in the united states apple and facebook are offering to pay for its female staff to freeze their eggs if they want to. but there is doubt over whether this initiative is the best way to empower women in the workplace. roxana saberi reports

tania page joins us live from the capitol.s like it is going to be a fiercely contested election. how is the vote going so far then? >> reporter: well from what we're seeing it has been going well in the short while after the phones opened i spoke to the african union chief observer, she said all reports she was getting was it was quite smooth. in about an hour's time we're expecting an update from the election commission and they will give us a broader picture. much of the area is very remote, so there is more opportunity for manipulation. the governing party is tipped to win. he is the favorite, but he is facing a resurgent opposition, and then there is the wild-card that is very popular in the urban areas and with young people. and that will be a very important vote, that young vote. what will be critical, of course, is the final numbers. whoever wins needs at least 51% in order to avoid a -- runoff. they don't want to face a united opposition vote. >> mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world, yet has billion
