ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live from oakland where there are still a lot of questions surrounding this protest and the police response. tara? >> reporter: well, a lot of people that we spoke to said they didn't see any police out here. we did put a call into the oakland police department. but we've not heard back yet. these anti-war protesters went on a rampage. this is the oakland tribune building where they smashed paint balls and they broke some windows and then as we sort of pan over here to the left. these are the offices for the berkeley lab and there is a surveillance camera perched up here where vandals struck and police will be taking a look at that video. now, this morning, crews power sprayed the paint off the tribune building but the other two windows on the be as easy to fix. we're told it will cost $6,000 to replace them. this began at 6:00 last night. about 200 people gathered at frank ogawa plaza in the evening. they timed this to the estart of the war in afghanistan. the demonstrators went on a march. and when they circled back to city hall, they struck three bank

tara moriarty is live now with information on the condition of the shooting victim and tara, you say there may be a connection to another exchange of gunfire in that area? >> reporter: that is right. that just happened only two days ago. so police are trying to put the puzzle pieces the pieces of the puzzle together right now. we're standing in front of police headquarters where we understand two witnesses to the shooting were brought in for questioning. we don't have all of the details about how exactly this shooting unfolded but what we do know is around quartzer to 2:00 this morning gunfire erupted in the area south of market street on sixth and stevenson. police believe there was a shootout between at least two people. we don't know how many casing were found on the ground but two different types of them were discovered at the scene. one matching bullet found in the victims body. the other matching the ones found in the victims pockets. now that victim was driven to san francisco general hospital by a friend at the scene and we understand he has under gone surgery and listed in c

tara moriarty it live on the latest of a manhunt of the suspect. what do we know? >> reporter: one woman is in custody here at the mission police station and two male suspects are still on the loose. all three left behind a car, a gun and a cell phone that was dropped on the sidewalk as they were trying to run away. the trio was driving on 101 northbound. they shot at an under cover inspector driving an unmarked compact car. that car now has two bullet holes in it. one striking very close to where the officer was sitting. luckily he wasn't hurt. it all happened around 1:30 this morning as we said the inspector driving northbound near the cesar chavez exit he noticed a gray sedan looked suspicious. he ran a license plate, the people inside of that car fired at him. >> he wasn't injured thankfully. >> how many shots did they fire at the officer? >> he said there were multiple rounds fired at him. >> reporter: the sergeant, the inspector did not return fire. he alert other units. it ended at bryant where three suspects jumped out and running. even though the officer w

let's go to tara moriarty who joins us live with a look at the firefight still underway. tara? >> reporter: cau -- claudine, this is a really stubborn fire. crews have been battling this for two hours. you can see the roof collapsed. as a result, all muni lines through west portal are shut down, the k, l and m. that's going to cause a traffic nightmare this morning. more than 100 firefighters are on the scene fighting these flames. the call came in from a passerby at 5:00 a.m. we're in front of the west portal union station. it started at the gobble restaurant and spread to an orthodontist's office. we'll have to wait for arson investigators to figure out what happened. crews cut walls out to let the fire breathe so they could attack it from up above. >> it seems like it got out of control at one point. was it? >> accessing it was difficult. and then it extended to a greater alarm, a third alarm. >> reporter: this is actually the chief neighborhood for police and firefighters. they are all kind of shaking their heads because this is where they come. no trains going through the

ktvu tara moriarty is out there at city hall this morning.several buildings and businesses that were vandalized last night. >> reporter: a lot of damage but no arrests. this protest didn't last very long so police weren't able to call in for mutual aid and make any arrests. you can see the damage on city hall the front doors the holes in the glass there still not boarded up. around 7:15 last night demonstrators started throwing paint balls and smashing windows not only at city hall but the oakland tribune office, the berkeley national lab office, and three banks. the group of about 200 people gathered earlier in the evening and timed the rally to coincide with the 11th anniversary of the war in afghanistan. the group went on a march. two luxury cars were vandalized and their owners tell us protestors are taking their anger out on the wrong people. >> i could understand at some point, but this is wrong. >> it's wrong what they are doing. >> reporter: again no arrests were made. but police could have some leads. we'll keep you posted on that. a
