tara moriarty is there in the neighborhood where tara you talked to one of the people that lived in that house. >> reporter: the man that lives there says he had just gone to bed. he was woken up by the sounds of popping noise and yellowish light. when he looked out the window he saw that his garage was on fire. the fire broke out in the detached garage at the home off chase street. fire crews got the call around 3:15 this morning. firefighters arrived within four minutes. the four people that live in the main house were able to get out safely before they arrived. the fire did however gut the garage. it damaged two coarse and blew out windows in the house. >> through a bathroom i went to see what was going on. the shop was going pretty good. started hearing loud bangs. ran back in. put what i have on. grabbed a fire hose. >> reporter: now luckily no one was hurt. an interesting side note firefighters tell us this property was once part of the mansion and the area where the fire broke out was the servant quarters. an electrical fire destroyed the mansion in the 60s and state parks later a

tara moriarty is live in richmond as well. tara, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the man who was trying to break into this home has died. that is the word i received from police. he was trying to break into the building you see behind me here. this is a plumbing business. and someone lives in the back of it. the victim was shot a few times in the leg. he was alert when police arrived but his injuries were serious enough that he was actually air lifted to a hospital. and meantime there are more details that are unfolding about how this shooting exactly unfolded. police are describing it to me as a burglary in progress. they are basically saying the burglar was trying to break in, steal some things when the victim confronted him and shot him in the chest. gunfire was exchanged because the victim obviously also shot. so the suspect he was driven to a nearby hospital and the people who drove him to that hospital are now in custody. they are at the richmond police station. obviously a lot of details need to be sorted out. but some of the people that i've been audiocass

ktvu tara moriarty is joining us from the area where three separate incidents happened over night. tara. >> reporter: we are in the power tell low district where we saw a couple of officers leave about a half hour ago. they were investigating an incident with a car similar to this one. it was the third time that vandals struck this morning. this all started around 1:00 when a witness says a group of eight people came out of the dark and together lifted a smart car flipping it over. the first car targeted was in the bernal heights neighborhood. the second happened a couple blocks away on anderson and ogden. the last occurred here around 1:30. a witness says he saw a group walk up to his roommate's smart car. >> all of a sudden you see eight hooded figures walk out from the corner and walk up to the car. i thought they looked like they were up to no good and sure enough they walk up to this smart car right here. all huddle around it and just lift it up and set it on its hind legs. >> reporter: the car sustained quite a bit of damage. many had windows that were shattered. we did talk

tara moriarty is live at the scene, where, tara, two people have died. >> reporter: witnesses say that a woman jumped from the second story of the apartment building that you see behind me. there are some char marks there by the window. right after her, a man jumped out with a baby in his arms. there were two children with him in the room. but he could only grab one. sadly we've learned that that child left behind was a 3-year- old boy named santana who did not make it. his mother, renee, was found dead in the bathroom. the man and baby were rushed to the hospital. fire chief told us the fire broke out at 10:00 a.m. off brookdale avenue and was so intense when crews busted down the door it broke in half quite easily. we spoke with santana aaunt who only learned about the death minutes before. >> we don't know where santana is. so i called my brother and i told him that the house caught on fire and that the baby wasn't there. we didn't know know where the baby was. >> go get the baby out of the house. >> she was on drugs, it was a very, very unsafe place for a child to be. >> reporter:

tara moriarty live at palm drive hospital where patients, tara, they are being turned away.at's going on? >> reporter: well, the ambulance is here, the paramedics are on standby because no one is being allowed inside palm drive hospital. we want to mention that last night a heart attack patient came by here and emergency personnel say that he might not have survived if he had had to go all the way to santa rosa which is about a half-hour away. now, if we take a look at video that we shot inside the hospital just a few moments ago, the staff is devastated. they knew this day would come but it's still not easy. many expected palm drive to close before midnight. late yesterday the hospital's ceo moved the closure to noon since there were patients here at the time. right now there's no one. the board has voted for bankruptcy and closure. again, that ambulance is stationed outside to transport anyone who show ups at the closest hospitals in santa rosa. those are a half-hour aday. doctors here say they only had a couple of days' notice. do you feel a bit broadsided? >> yeah. that'
