tara moriarty is at the crash scene. this is at the redwood road off ramp with more on what witnesses saw. tara. >> reporter: the chp says the victim was speeding for several miles starting all the way back in contra costa county. we are obviously in alameda county. if you take a look behind me here. you can see debris from the car, from the accident still in the median and glass in the roadway. we're at the redwood road off ramp where the road was shut down for two hours. the man was driving at high speeds. swerving all over the road. someone called # 911 after they spotted him on highway 24 westbound just minutes before this accident. and then around 1:00 this morning he hit the center divide and rolled for about 100 feet. officers say he was wearing a seat belt but he died on scene and luckily no other cars were involved in the accident. cars were diverted off the highway. at 3:00 this morning the car -- if we happen to get the identity of the person involved, whether pass it along to you. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2

tara moriarty is on 6th street in san francisco where a large puddle remains. tara?>> reporter: yeah, 6th street is pretty much a nightmare in the northbound direction as you are getting off 280 all the way up to market street. if you take a look behind me, you can see just how bad the gridlock is and there were police out here directing traffic but it looks like it's slowly starting to get back to normal. if we swing around to the right, if you follow me over here, i can show you exactly where the fire hydrant was. take a look right here. the hole is right there and that is where witnesses say that a truck driver was backing up his 18-wheeler and sheared that hydrant right off the sidewalk sending water spewing everywhere. we arrived before 8:00 just as fire crews were leaving. they put the fire hydrant on the back of the rig. that will obviously need to be replaced. we know that fire hydrants in order to get the parts and labor runs upwards of i think about 7,000. police are interviewing the driver of the 18-wheeler. they were interviewing him. they let him go. cit
