tara moriarty is joining us live. what is the latest, tara? >> reporter: talk about a mystery. this call came in as a medical. they thought these victims were suffering from sort of virus but they probably had headaches, stomach ache, nashua, and these symptoms can be confused with carbon monoxide poisoning. half a dozen people were sick. two had to be hospitalized and four were treated here at the scene. we believe all of the victims were flight attendants with singapore airlines. the health department was here on scene where they did find elevated levels of carbon monoxide. they cannot figure out where the gas was coming from. we are told the incident happened on the fourth floor. we went and took a look inside of the hotel and based on the fire report these two rooms are across the hall from each other. carbon monoxide is a odorless, colorless gas so it's particularly dangerous when it cuts you off guard. we do not know the source of where the fumes with ever coming from. we're here live in san francisco tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, tara, thank you. >>> w

i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> all right. thank you, tara. oakland police this morning released the identity of a man officers shot and killed following a drive-by shooting and a high speed chase yesterday afternoon. the chase ended with a violent crash at 85th avenue and san leandro street just before 4:00 p.m. officers say that the driver, 24-year-old jeremy brown, took off running but he was soon captured. while the passenger, 19-year- old martin refused to surrender. >> he was armed with two guns. the officer engaged the suspect. he did not follow the officers commands at which time the officers did fire. >> oakland police say they did have some problems talking to the dispatch center by radio during the initial call. and that delayed both the police and medical response. >>> once again, golden gate bridge is considering going all electronic at its toll plaza. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us now to explain what's happening today that could bring that one step closer to reality. good afternoon, jade. >> reporter: good afternoon. we watched

tara moriarty just spoke with a neighbor about this shocking discovery. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. we did speak to a neighbor just a few minutes ago and he says that the last time he saw berry bingham was alive was last weekful he says that the man was walking down the street. friendly guy. waved, said hello and walked into his townhouse here off of henry street. he also mentioned that police did remove bingham's car which was parked right in front of his home. now bingham's son knew something was wrong yesterday when he couldn't get a hold of his father for quite some time. he called his dad's office and had some co-workers check out his home. they found the door open. they knocked. but no answer. around 11:30 yesterday morning police found the body of the 64- year-old which has suffered trauma. authorities will not say at this point how bingham was killed. bingham was a jamaican native. he was the political director of 1021 which represents public workers in the city of oakland, alameda county and bart employees. he was a deacon at hi

tara moriarty has been following the case all foreigning. -- all morning. where does the investigation stand at this hour? >> reporter: well, right now, police are reviewing surveillance video. if you take a look behind me you can see the charred marks. that's where the burning car was found. but just down street down the corner, there are four surveillance cameras and police are hoping that they provide some clues. just after 3:00 this morning, fire crews found a car engulfed by flames. >> i heard a horn from a car going off. it had been a few minutes. >> reporter: moses lives across the street. he rushed outside and took pictures with his cell phone. >> at that point, the flames in the car were probably above our heads. >> reporter: then firefighters made a grim discovery, the body of a woman inside. >> homicide investigators along with arson investigators are working together to determine exactly what happened. >> reporter: investigators r emoved the entire car with the flatbed truck and took it to a crime lab for further analysis. this happened on a sid

ktvu's tara moriarty is at sfo right now with the very latest. i know you're talking to some stranded passengers. how is it out there now, tara? >> reporter: well, they're pretty ed. some people have been here spending the night everyone in the airport for the past two days. they are trying to get back east but they have been unable to do so. now there are no canceled flight signs here but the airport duty manager told us earlier this morning that jfk and newark airports are closed. so these folks unfortunately may be told at the last minute they will have to eightieth longer. from midnight until 3:15 this morning nearly 20 flights into sfo were canceled because of bad weather. people trying to get here basically stuck in washington d.c., philadelphia, boston and new york. storm has dumped an icy mix of snow and rain back east hitting hard in d.c., new york, philadelphia and boston and it's taking a toll on passengers. >> yesterday they told us it was delayed until 6:00 p.m. so we left the airport because they said it was going to be canceled. we

tara moriarty joins us from san francisco with the story. good morning tara. >> reporter: good morning. investigators are blaming carbon monoxide poisoning. two were rushed to the hospital, four were treated here at the scene. it happened just before 11:00 last night. we spoke to fire officials this morning and they say the car came in as a yellow. it was issued a yellow alert meaning mass casualty. here is the head scratcher. authorities cannot figure out where the carbon monoxide was coming from. they tested two floors of the hotel. we are told the incident happened on the fourth floor. as far as the source, we do not know at this point. we put calls into the public health department and we have not received word yet. the victims we believe are flight attendants from singapore headlines. the corporate office will be releasing a statement later this morning and there will be a manager not available for another hour. hopefully we can talk to them and see what they have to say about the incident. that is the latest here in san francisco i'm ta

ktvu tara moriarty is live out there right now with new details. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we are hearing from published reports the victim was not a customer inside of the coffee shop but he had been running from the suspect and ducked inside the cafe to try to hide. we are here in front of city hall which is a few blocks from where it happened. police need witnesses to step forward to crack this case. the shooting happened in broad daylight around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. investigators say someone entered the cafe and opened fire shooting and killing a 25- year-old man. detectives say the victim was shot several times and some reports indicate he was shot in the head. he was pronounced dead at the scene. police are not sure what sparked the shooting. the victim was targeted. the suspect ran away after firing his weapon. just to give you an idea of the neighborhood we're talking about. it is actually located the cafe on the backside of a very popular movie complex located on banous avenue. it's on the border of a safe an

ktvu tara moriarty is joining us live. she is in belmont with the very latest. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. we talked to the chief this morning he rarely covers fires where people are jumping from balconies to save their lives. this was one of those fires. two dozen people have been evacuated from the scene. they have been brought here. if we take a look at the video we can show you where flames are lapping up around the balcony of this apartment building. six people were hurt. they had to be take ton the hospital. four were treated for smoke inhalation. two suffered from broken bones from jumping from their balcony. luckily everyone is okay including lance woo. he said he smelled smoke, saw it, and grabbed his cat who was scared and hidden under the bed. >> i literally flipped my bed over to grab her. i got her and ran out to the balcony and waited there and firemen came with a ladder and i handed my cat off to the fireman that went down with the cat and i climbed down the ladder. >> reporter: again about 25 people were evacuated and those fol

ktvu tara moriarty is also on the scene this morning with the latest information. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. we are told one person jumped from the balcony here at the apartment complex so some very dramatic moments. this all unfolded shortly after 3:00 this morning. this is a one-way street. there is about dozen emergency vehicles on this road. this street has been blocked off. you can see flames shooting out of the second story balcony. crews are still fighting that fire right now. >> we've got a working fire this three-story apartment complex. there were about four people injured so far that were transported to local hospitals. none of the firefighters or police officers were injured. the entire building had to be evacuated. we have 25-30 people that have been displaced. >> reporter: investigators believe the fire started on the second floor but do not know the cause right now. all of the tenants are now being picked up by a bus and will be taken to city hall or a community center. red cross is on the scene. we are waiting to talk to the batta

tara moriarty join us live from san francisco with more on the story. >> reporter: good morning. starting today, you will no longer be able to catch a cable car up and down california street here. now, construction crews are standing by. you can see them in the parking lot. at 99:00, they will be b reaking -- at 9:00, they they will be replacing and dig up and start to rebuild and repave the concrete streets. it's part of the $24 million by the department of public works to upgrade the cable car system. the line that runs along california and the embarcadero system will be shut down in j uly. in order to ease congestion, a muni bus will run. >> it's okay. but much better. >> reporter: you think it's okay because you can take the bus instead? >> yeah, it's okay. for me, it's okay. >> reporter: we spoke to the driver who says that it's a lot warmer for passengers on the bus than on the cable cars. so that's a positive. the shuttles have been operating for the past week anyway because of a cable line that snapped. officials want to make sure that folks can still get to where they ne

tara moriarty joins us live. >> reporter: good morning. fire crews just spoke us around the back side of the building to show us all of the damage. if you take a look behind me, there's the stairwell. you did see -- you can see where they started from. that's where the fire started. we know three people jumped from little balconies or windows -- from their balconies or windows. we're at the apartment complex where the fire broke out. you can see flames shooting out of the second story. dozens of people had to be evacuated. six people were taken to hospitals. >> i've only seen this type of thing happen a few times. but that type of fire 57 intensity, you want to get out of the building. people can't get out through the normal means, they are gonna get out any way they can. >> reporter: here's video we shot of the damage. the fire started from the second floor. you can see where flames lapped up to the third floor. crews estimate about a million in damage. an investigation is underway to determine how it started. now, again, luckily everyone

check in now on ktvu's tara moriarty who is following the story.ood morning, tara. >> reporter: well, oakland police have had their hands full over the past 24 hours. the most recent in a string of shootings happened last night off international boulevard. police say two men, one armed with a gun, tried to kidnap a woman right off of the street just after 11:00 on the 3100 block of international. the woman was shot and taken to a local hospital where she is recovering. police are still searching for those suspects, but we have no description of them. now this is the fourth shooting that shook oakland on martin luther king, jr. day including one in east oakland around 4:00 last night that left one man dead. that incident also happened off international and 80th. three other people were injured. now just one hour later another man was shot at 14th and east 27th street. then at 8:00 two more people shot in the 5700 block of east 17th. police say it is too early to tell if any of these shootings are related. if you have any information about any of the

ktvu tara moriarty spoke to the family members this morning on how they are doing. good morning tara. >> reporter: good morning. the family members are just loading up into cars right now. they are getting ready to go to a place the red cross has provided for them. you can see all of the rubble stacked up on the sidewalk. chunks of the ceiling and the roof that fire crews had to chop out of the way when they were attacking this fire. you can also take a look where the attic this is where the fire was started. this fire could have been smoldering for hours, weeks, or months. there is a deep char indicating this fire has been burning for quite some time. now a mother and children are left wondering where they will live. around 3:00 in the morning chambers smelled smoke. she says she has not been sleeping well lately because her father and grandmother recently died and now more tragedy has struck but is thankful everyone got out alive. >> i thank god we are alive. other than that thus is material. they will be mad for losing their video games, all of their clothes. i me

ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty is live at markham elementary school. what happened and where was the teacher? >> reporter: at this point we don't know where the teacher was exactly inside of the classroom or if he or she saw anything. we don't know either where the two students were inside of the classroom. i'm sure these are the questions that parents will be asking when they drop their kids off at school here in a couple of hours. now parents did receive notices from the principal yesterday afternoon telling them that initial findings confirm two second graders had oral sex inside the classroom last week. there was another incident in the same classroom last week with several students with at least partially undressing. >> no. >> i don't know how it can happen. >> they are imitating what they are seeing. they didn't learn it at school. >> reporter: ktvu first broke this story yesterday. a spokesman with the oakland unified school district said it all came to light when students told a teachers aid who told the school principal. district officials wil

ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live with the details. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, dave. you know martin luther king, jr. day is typically a day symbolically known for peaceful activism. but yesterday the streets of oakland were marred by violence. we had four shootings over just about a seven hour period. now, here's a look at where the most recent in a string of shootings happened last night off international boulevard. authorities say two people, one armed with a gun, tried to kidnap a woman off the street just after 11:00. that woman was shot and taken to a local hospital where she is recovering. now police are still searching for the suspects but we have no description of them at this point. this is the fourth shooting to ripple through oakland on martin luther king, jr. day including one in east oakland around 4:00 last night that left one man dead. that incident also happened off international. three other people were injured. now within the next four hours there were two more shootings that left three people shot

ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live. she knows all the details. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, dave. well, of course the good news is that there are less people out on the roadways, but the bad news is that that may be attributed to more people being out of work. now the drop in congestion is steep. and another reason for that officials say may be because of improvement projects like this one off 880 and high street. the corridor improvement project. which are helping ease traffic. statistics are out by the urban mobility report and they rank the san francisco area as the sixth worst traffic area in the nation. we usually rank fifth. at least that's been the case for the past 28 years. we asked some commuters what they make of this study. >> may have to do with car pool lanes, but most likely i think it has to do with the economy. nobody is working a lot. 40 hours like they used to. some working three days a week. >> reporter: now if you're wondering which cities top the list for worst traffic, washington d.c. and chicago. bottom li

tara moriarty joins us now with details of this investigation. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. when berry's son was unable to reach his father he called his dad's office. workers from the union came here to his townhouse located off henry street. they noticed his car was parked in the street. when they walked up to the door they noticed it was open. and they knocked and there was no answer. now the co-workers then called police who went into the house around 11:30 yesterday morning and made a gruesome discovery. they found the body of the 64- year-old which had suffered trauma. authorities won't say at this point how he was killed but they are treating this case as a homicide. bingham was the political director of the local 1021 which represents public workers including those in the city of oakland, alameda county and bart employees. he was a deacon at his church, the first african-american elected to the alameda school board. he was divorced with three children. now, a union leader spoke to ktvu and said bingham's life "was dedicat

tara moriarty is live at the restaurant to show us why some people are upset about this. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. the man of this pizza parlor wanted this paint job to match his soccer jersey. they are saying it's too distracting. if you take a look up and down the street a lot are brick, they are very historic looking. the color of this building, well, it's very yellow. as you can see. now many folks are complaining about its vibrant feature. san rafael has no specific requirements for downtown structures. the design review board is supposed to give the green light to any questionable hue whether it's a significant change from the original color or outside of what we normally know as acceptable. the name of the restaurant also raising a few eyebrows. the city says it does not regulate names. we will be talking to a few folks to find out what they think of it. we don't know if this will go before the design review board. so we will definitely let you know as soon as we find out. we are here live in san rafael. dave and pam, what do you think? >> it's

ktvu's tara moriarti talked to one bay area politician who says this is not the america he knows. >>orter: today's violent rampage on congresswoman gabrielle giffords and her constituents in front of the safeway store has stunned politicians. >> what in the world is america coming to? what is happening here? >> reporter: the former lieutenant governor and current congressman says over the passed 27 years says he has been threatened from everything from an ax to a gun. >> a farmer, i don't know, 15 feet ahead of me on the podium stood up and had a 45 automatic pointed at me and saying: i want to kill you, you sob, you've ruined my farm. >> reporter: he reports any letters, e-mails or phone calls and has been known to wear a bullet proof vest. this is her last tweet before the shooting. it reads. mr. politicians now use faceback or twitter to make themselves more accessible to the public, to draw them out to meet them in person. but are some of them making themselves too available? capitol police are now asking members of congress to be more vigilant about security. he isn't surprised.

tara moriarty is live at the scene now with the very latest. hi tara. >> reporter: homicide detectives arrived on the scene just after we did. they finished walking through a bunch of evidence. we saw them with their flashlights they were pointing at markers. we don't know what the evidence markers were. san leandro police have not released much information as of yet. this is being investigated as a homicide. we can see one body bag lying in the street. the cross is 148th. this is where shots were fired around 320 this morning. >> when officers initially responded to the scene, they found the body of a male in the general area fire and paramedics responded to the scene and later pronounced that person dead. >> reporter: now the coroner will be arriving later this morning. for now investigator again have sifted through everything to try to figure out how this crime went down. as we mentioned we are here on east 14th. behind me it's hard to see. it is so foggy. but they have blocked off the street down there. it stretches for two entire city block

tara moriarty just talked to the family. one of the families that has been displaced. good morning tara. >> good morning. fire officials say it's lucky they got out alive. crews are starting to wrap up everything here. there are a lot of items out in front of the yard there. there were working smoke detectors in the house by they didn't go off. that's because the fire started in the attic and smoke detectors wouldn't have sounded. a mother lives here with her three children. she happened to be watching tv. she smelled smoke around 3:00 this morning and called 911. now fire crews immediatelier to out the ceiling to found the flames and had to remove half of the roof. chambers that lives here said she only had one thing on her mind when she smelled the smoke. >> getting them out of the house. before anything bad happened. >> reporter: now pg&e has secured the gas and electric after crews turned them off when they first arrived. fire chief told ktvu there is $75,000 worth of damage. her kids are devastated. it's after christmas so all of the toys, toys, and video games wil
