ktvu tara moriarty is at an apartment building where one williamwoman there is being called a hero. good morning, tara. >> reporter: at least half a dozen people of e are out of their homes after an early morning apartment fire. it happened down this corridor and to the right is where the actual building is located. one of the people that have been displaced a woman that carried an elderly man out of the building. we will get to her in a minute. this fire broke out around 12:30 this morning. it started in the outside stairwell of the second floor. in order to get out people had to escape through the back door. it was a pretty tricky fire for fie righters because -- for firefighters because the building is sandwiched between several buildings. they had some difficulties with ladders. about 60 firefighters were here. they evacuated nearly two dozen people. one of them lia h gee. >> i cared him down because he was in the top floor. and the door could not open. i saw the smoke and the fire then i carry him up to the back stair. that time i almost fell because the smoke gave me a lot of h

tara moriarty is outside the courthouse in san francisco. so tara, what can we expect today? >> reporter: well, barry bonds should be arriving here shortly. if you take a look behind me, you can see the normal group of photographers that sort of hover in front of the courthouse waiting for bonds to arrive to get that shot. now, this morning, the prosecution's last witness will finish up, the doctor, doctor catlin -- dr. catlin will finish up. bonds told the grand jury back in 2003 what he -- that he never knowingly used steroids and then the defense will begin its case and right now, legal analysts are saying that the defense has the upper hand here. that's because one of the prosecution's witnesses. dr.ting, went south on them. ting was bonds' orthopedic surgeon and hurt the prosecution because he repeatedly contradicted. star witness. now, hoskins told the jury that the doctor said that bonds's 1999 elbow injury was caused by steroid use but ting actually denied that. so a lot of twist and turns in this case. we will, of course, give you an update and keep you posted on wha

reporting live from san rafael i'm tara moriarty. >>> there is another critical decision late last night that may give way to new developments and jobs on treasure island. coming up what is developer want to build and why some are opposing their plan. >>> also this morning police are looking for suspects in an overnight shooting at an oakland gas station. it happened just before midnight at 73rd and bancroft. at least one gunman opened fire at the gas station wounding two people. both victims are expected to survive. witnesses spotted several young men running from the scene. so far police have not made any arrests. >>> a huge fire at a warehouse and now it could be sunday before it's completely out. that fire has been burning since wednesday afternoon. firefighters are soaking the building using ladder trucks, piles of burned products can be seen through open doorways. the martin family stored its juices and cider at that warehouse. they expect shortages in the summer and fall. >> we lost 6,000 bins of apples that was in this cold storage last night too. there is no way to replace that

ktvu's tara moriarty is in redwood city now with more on how they got out safe. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. firefighters say this was an extremely close call. they say they were very lucky they didn't have six people dead from this fire. luckily that was not the case. but if you take a look behind me here you can see where crews were actually inside of this mobile home. they were checking for hot spots. and they are not going to be walking on the floor at all because it's about to give way. they have to be very careful about the way that they approach it. if you take a look over here, this is the mobile home next door. you can see just how intense these flames were as it melted the paneling right off. now it happened just after 2:00 in the morning here in the harbor village mobile home park off bay shore road in redwood city. here's how it unfolded. a mother was sleeping inside. she woke up not sure if she smelled smoke or she was having a bad dream. but she started to look around. she saw some flames near her drier. now she tried to run back to

ktvu's tara moriarty tells us the vote came late last night after a lively debate. tara. >> reporter: well, after four hours of some heated public comments, the city council made a unanimous decision to pursue the hybrid model of redwood city. we're here at the belmont fire station breaking up this fall. last night police pushed anover flow crowd into the hallways when more than 150 people showed up at the council meeting. at times the mayor had to pound his gavel to keep the noise down. most people said they did not want the city to give the job of fighting fires to a private company called waken hut. >> a low bid contractor, what happens if they fail? will any of you guarantee that they can save my house in a fire? >> reporter: the mayor has said that his city needs to trim the budget and the hybrid option will save the city of san carlos about $1.5 million a year. >> redwood city and san carlos will share management and the fire chief, the training, the fire marshals, but the rank and file firefighters in this situation will belong to san carlos. >> reporter: san

ktvu's tara moriarty telling us it's their latest response to last september's pipeline disaster. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. folks seemed very surprised when we told them that less than a mile from here we're in the downtown area is a high risk pipeline. anyone who lives within a couple of blocks of one of these spots will be receiving a warning letter in the mail from pg&e. now there are a hundred spots that top the list. here's a look at some of them. we're actually in the second most dangerous. there are actually six cities that rank in the top ten here in the bay area. there are four hot spots around the livermore area and fremont. another in antioch. and a high risk line that runs right underneath stanford university in palo alto. customers say it's about time pg&e took some action. >> it would seem to me that pg&e could do a better job at disclosing information. i don't know why they don't frankly. >> reporter: pg&e has said that for security reasons it does not disclose the information. now the company came under fire after the san bruno pipeline disaster

ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live to tell us what led to that rescue. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. there's an actual fire department here at san quentin state prison. it consistents of some inmates as well as one staff member. they were the first ones to respond to people that have been stranded by a boating accident here off of the shoreline. it happened just after 1:00 this morning right where the land juts out near the prison. >> as officer was in his post tonight, he heard faint sounds emanating from the water. and of course being observant he looked out and saw two individuals out in the water. and they were definitely in distress. >> reporter: now that guard phoned for help and then the inmates swung into action. they got into the water and pulled the man out. crews from the san raphael fire department arrived and then used a rope rescue to save the woman. apparently the pair had left harbor earlier that night and they had engine trouble. and when the man tried to restart the engine he fell overboard and the boat flipped. he

ktvu's tara moriarty joins us now from the newsroom and tells us one woman died in one of those shootings. tara. >> well, that's right. this morning police are investigating this incident because two people dropped a dying woman off at the hospital. and police aren't sure if those men actually knew the woman, if they were involved in the shooting or if they were simply good samaritans. around 10:00 last night they brought the victim bleeding from gunshot wounds to the medical center. hospital staff performed cpr but were unable to save her. when police questioned the men who brought them to the hospital it led to an area several blocks away to poplar park just south of i-80. officers scoured the street with flashlights for any evidence. they heard more than a dozen shots just before 10:00. then early this morning just after 1:00 police responded to another shooting on 45th and international boulevard. officials say one male was shot but is expected to survive. police do have a suspect in custody. now we put in a call to oakland police to find out more about the victims and what led up to

tara moriarty explains how a guard and inmate played critical role in the rescue effort. >> reporter: it was an alert guard in a lookout tower that noticed a man and woman strand in chilly bay waters near the prison. >> as the officer was at his post tonight, he heard something emanating from the water and looked down and saw two individuals out in the water and they were definitely in distress. >> reporter: around 1:15 a.m., the guard called for help and that's when inmates here at san quentin prison sprang into action. they're part of a fire department and jumped into the water to help try to save the couple. when firefighters arrived just minutes later, inmates were administering cpr to the man, who had gone into cardiac arrest. >> the second victim was still down on the shore. we had a rope rescue. >> reporter: the pair left the dock around 10:00 last night and ran into mechanical trouble. >> the boat capsized somewhere in the bay and from what we have been told, they actually were out in the water for about an hour to an hour and a half and the current led them to our shoreline.

ktvu's tara moriarty joins us now from livermore to tell us what's going out to millions of homes and businesses. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, pg&e is starting to send out letters to folks who live near high risk gas lines. and a portion of livermore ranks number two on the list. now we're in the downtown area, but about a mile from here on a southern outskirts of town is a pipeline in question. and anyone who lives within 2,000 feet of that area will be receiving something in the mailbox soon. now pg&e came under intense fire after the san bruno pipeline disaster last september. and after intense pressure from customers and legislators, it released its top 100 list of sections that needed inspected, repaired or replaced. the mailers which are being sent out over the next couple of weeks will offer advice on what to do if a person wants to learn a location of the pipelines or detect the rotten egg smell of a gas leak and hears hissing, whistling or roaring sounds coming from underground. the four criteria for getting on the list, the potential for  third party damage. like

ktvu's tara moriarty joins us now from our newsroom. she tells us that the killing was just one of two overnight shootings in oakland. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, pam. police are trying to piece together how a woman was shot and killed on a playground. two people dropped the victim off. she was bleeding from two gunshot wounds. medics performed cpr but unable to save her. when police questioned the people who brought her to the hospital it led them to an area near poplar park. late last night officers scoured the streets with flashlights looking for clues near 30th and union. witnesses say they heard more than a dozen shots just before 10:00. now inspectors are still unclear as to whether the victim knew the people who dropped her off at the emergency room or not. then early this morning just after 1:00 police responded to yet another shooting on 45th and international boulevard. one male was shot. he is expected to survive. and police say they do have a suspect in custody. we will continue to monitor these shootings a

ktvu tara moriarty tells us the robbers seem to have one specific target. good morning, tara. >> reporter: we are here at villages in err kid yeah park. as you take a look behind me the security has been beefed up here. there is a truck and the surveillance cameras on the top of this pole. this is to protect this construction zone. police say these are targeting construction workers who work inside of homes like this one. authorities say the robbers are armed and have been walking into unsecured homes and out oaf public view. they pull out handguns and demand wallets and money from contractors. police are trying to get the word out if you live on a block where contractors are doing work alert them. remind them to lock their door behind them and do not carry a large amount of cash. if you do see anything suspicious contact police. >>> new details are emerging about the events that lead up to the san bruno explosion that killed eight people. the national transportation board is investigating the cause of that explosion. now it has sent the repair crew causing

ktvu's tara moriarty is on the scene of a rescue that took place just a few hours ago. what happened, tara? >> reporter: well, a prison guard and some inmates may be considered some heros this morning. happened less than four hours ago. a couple out on the bay their boat had capsized and they drifted here to shore. if you take a look behind me it's pretty dark, but that is where it happened on the bay right here where the land juts out at san quentin. again, a couple in a boat that flipped over. according to san quentin officials they left the dock earlier in the evening and started to have engine trouble. when the man tried to restart the engine he fell off the boat and it flipped over. the man and woman drifted in the cold waters for up to an hour and a half until they hit the shoreline here at san quentin. >> one of our officers was in one of our exterior towers heard sounds of someone calling for help. and actually observed two individuals out in the water. >> reporter: now there is a fire crew consistenting of inmates here. and they are the ones that got into the wa

ktvu's tara moriarty live with details of an early morning water rescue right near san quentin prison. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. one of the prison guards who keeps watch in the towers here along the shoreline heard some faint cries for help around 1:15 this morning. when he looked out on to the water he noticed two people who appeared to be drowning. i know it happened behind us here along the shoreline where the land juts out there along the prison near the prison. the guard quickly radioed for help and according to officials here the couple left last night to go boating they started to have engine trouble. when the man tried to restart the boat, that's when he fell overboard. the boat flipped. he was not wearing a life jacket. but the woman was. >> somewhere out in the bay got in some trouble. and their boat capsized, turned over out in the bay. for approximately about an hour to an hour and a half they were out in the bay. and the currents took them over here to our shoreline here at san quentin. >> reporter: now here at the prison there is a fire department co

ktvu's tara moriarty has exclusive copy of the tape and new details on the investigation. tara? >> reporter: police say this is where the body of 21-year-old dawan taylor was found. if you take a look over here, those are surveillance cameras right there on the corner of the fast food place and they may bring police one step closer to his killer. let's take an exclusive look at video that may help police. you see a man walk through. taylor's family has seen this video and they identify him as dawan. and you see a car pull up next to the man. it appears there is some sort of conversation, argument programs and then the driver jumps back into the car. it appears that taylor suffered several gunshot wounds. they won't know for sure until the coroner reports. they say it was a possibility he was stabbed. no one reported hearing gunshots in the area early this morning. now, we talked to dawan's mother this morning. she and her daughters were obviously distraught. she had just identified her son at the coroner's office. police say they did not find a wallet on taylor. he does spend a

tara moriarty is live on the scene. she tells us what the officers are finding out. >> reporter: the alameda county coroner van pulled up ten minutes ago and we did see them taking pictures of the body and they loaded that body on a stretcher and into the van. there are no bullet casings in the street. police tell us the victim suffered several gunshot wounds. either the suspect has good aims or this body was dumped here. another detail authorities released no one reported any gunshots fired. we are here off of international boulevard where the call came in at 3:45 this morning. someone driving by shotted a body lying in the gutter on the north side of the roadway. right now they are trying to figure out who he is. this is a very busy thorough fare so chances are he was not there for very belong. rush hour should be starting momentarily. you might want to avoid this area. it looks like they will be clearing the scene soon. we will keep you posted about that. >>> later this morning a local native american group will hold

tara moriarty tells us about accident and the dramatic rescue that followed. we were told by people at the scene when this happened that the male victim, not in good shape. we're work on that for you. here's the interesting part of the story. the people who assisted in the rescue efforts were inmates here at san quentin. they are part of a fire department here and they along with an alert guard in a watch tower were able to save a stranded couple out on the water. >> the officer heard feint sounds. he look the out and saw two individuals in distress. >> reporter: a guard called for help and that's when the inmates and staff member jumped into the water to rescue couple. they were able to save the man and the crews arrived. the couple had left the harbor sometime last night and ran into mechanical problems. >> the boat capsized somewhere out in the bray -- out in the bay. >> reporter: officials say the man not wearing a life jacket went into cardiac arrest -- cardiac arrest and they performed cpr on him. the boating accident was considered a breach of security.

ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live now with the details of all of this. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, some folks who live about a mile from downtown livermore where we're standing will probably be receiving those letters very soon. that's because pg&e began its mass mailout to folks who live near high risk gas lines. and a section of livermore ranks number two on that list. now pg&e came under fire after the san bruno pipeline disaster last september. and after intense pressure from customers and legislators it released its top 100 list of sections of pipe that needed inspected, repaired or replaced. now the mailers which are being sent out over the next couple of weeks will offer advice on what to do if a person wants to learn a location of the pipeline or detect a rotten egg smell of a gas leak or hears hissing, whistling or roaring sounds coming from underground. we spoke to one man from livermore who says that pg&e shouldn't have with held to begin with. >> i think it's work they need to do that maybe they just don't prioritize or something li

ktvu's tara moriarty joins us now from our newsroom and tells us one woman died in those shootings. tara. >> well, police aren't sure what to make of two people who dropped that dying woman off at an oakland hospital. around 10:00 last night they brought the victim suffering from gunshot wounds to summit medical center. medical workers performed cpr but were unable to save her. when police questioned the people who brought her to the hospital, it led them to an area near poplar park just south of interstate 580. officers combed the streets with flashlights looking for clues near 30th and union. witnesses say they heard more than a dozen shots just before 10:00. investigators are still unclear as to whether the victim knew the people who dropped her off at the emergency room or if they just happened to come across her. then early this morning less than four hoursing a police responded to yet another shooting at 45th and international boulevard. officials say one male was shot and is expected to survive. police do have a suspect in custody. we have put in a call to oakland police to fi

ktvu's tara moriarty is in san francisco. she tells us about a secretly recorded audiotape and some other new surprises. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. you know the jury was actually dismissed yesterday because one juror called in sick because of kidney stones. he's a 60-year-old from antioch and he is expected to return this morning. but in case he doesn't an alternate will then step in. now the other big news was the revelation of this secret tape. now yesterday when bonds arrived here at the courthouse he appeared relaxed, very confident. but minutes later he along with everyone else discovered that prosecutors had this unexpected piece of evidence. and if admitted it could be a big blow for bonds' defense team. bonds' former business manager had been missing this tape for six to seven years, but apparently found it sunday. he says it was on side b of a microcassette. basically it's a secretly recorded conversation that he had with bonds' orthopedic surgeon dr. ting. ting says he never talked about bonds usi

ktvu's tara moriarty is live outside the federal courthouse in san francisco right now to tell us what happens next now that the verdict is in. tara. >> reporter: well, claudine, the u.s. district attorney's office has said it will try to decide as soon as possible whether to retry bonds on the counts that the jury was deadlocked upon. most legal experts agree that a retrial is most unlikely. the jury found bonds guilty of one obstruction of justice charge but hung on the three perjury charges regarding steroid use. bonds' attorney says he will try to get the guilty charge thrown out. now although he was smiling, bonds said quietly that he had nothing to celebrate. six of the 12 jurors did speak after the verdict. and when asked if bonds' demeanor or perception of arrogance hurt him, the jurors replied yes. >> in his grand jury testimony i think it did. he was evasive and didn't answer the question clearly. we used that against him. that was our evidence. >> reporter: in front of the grand jury bonds was repeatedly asked a yes or no question but would only give his first name, fred. bo
