tara mori arcy if -- tara moriarty is there. you know what the victim's friend is saying. n, tara? >> reporter: well, there are a lot of questions for the alameda police. we did speak to the victim's friend. he said they were pulled over by alameda police and after that things got worse. if you take a look behind me you can see the street is blocked off at doolittle at harborway. you can see the windshield of a silver lexus that's smashed in. that's where police say the driver struck and killed a pedestrian around 6:00 this morning. police are interviewing that male driver. we don't know howfs he was going but from what we can see in our aerial shot, the body, covered by the yellow tarp, and the car are about 100 yards away from peach other -- from each other. here's the victim's friend. >> we got pulled over. the police -- alameda police pulled us over. we got towed. we was walking. my friend knocked over a guy. he was dead. we were just a few feet ahead of him. he had bad knees. he was walking slow and i heard somebody yell and i seen the guy pull ulbehind us with a crack

ktvu tara moriarty joins us now with an update from the scene. tara. >> reporter: we just spoke to police. they say this particular suspect has been changing up his hiding spot here along the cliff you see behind me. for more than 12 hours now. police say he broke into an apartment at the top of the hill. slid down the cliff and keeps trying to sneak back up. that is why there are officers stationed at the top and bottom. they have been searching for the suspect. they are also staked out at the bottom near chestnut street. a woman living in an apartment off of run bar told police a suspect stole her ring and escaped over the balcony and down the cliff where fire crews are shining a suspect of where they believe he is hiding. >> it's pretty cliffy. brush is pretty thick. 10-20 feet gh. apparently burglarized an apartment on the hill. when he was confronted by the building manager, he ran into the hillside and came down. basically almost to the bottom of the hill. >> reporter: every now and then they will see the bushes moving and the suspect will y

tara moriarty is out there in san jose this morning and she just spoke with firefighters, tara? >> well we had a lot of heroes this morning and there are a lot in this area that help a lot of these people get out safely because the initial reports were that some people were trapped inside. if we look here, you can see how extensive the damage is here. it is a senior apartment complex located off of madden avenue and joining me, we got here very early this morning and this fire i understand quickly escalated to a 3 alarm. >> yes. on the scene a heavy fire many floors multiple floors and a roof was involved. it was a senior center and they were concerned there were people inside so we upgraded it to a three alarm very quickly. >> reporter: with the other people they didn't necessarily have fire related injuries? >> yes, that is correct, we transported five people from this event and you can only imagine waking up in the middle of the night, elderly and waking up with your house on fire. we are just glad nobody else was hurt. >> reporter: was the fire on the exterior when you arriv

ktvu tara moriarty joins us now from the scene with information about men who are being detained. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. we are here off of ninth street. we are just off of central freeway where police had to shut down one of the off ramps here. while they search for the gunman. where they were was in that apartment building. that you see right there. they were firing off their guns and jumped a couple of rooftops until they were all the matily found. came down the fire escape of that building. police were able to arrest the two men around 1:00 this morning. that is after two hours of trying to find them. the chp blocked off the freeway and had a helicopter here. but backed off because of the fact shots were still being fired when police arrived. a swat team was here. tactical units and fire department. they quarantined off several blocks. established a perimeter and told people to stay in place. >> shots were fired off. i heard about three shots. and then kept walking a little further. about four more rounds go up. cops told me to go back inside the store.

tara moriarty has more reaction. we just pulled up and protesters basically blocked up this intersection here. we pan over here to our left. you can see on the move, once again, they are making their way up california street. and the protesters earlier had sort of cornered officer on their motorcycles, we noticed and then police took off and came back in force. within minute, there was a scuffle between protesters and police and we saw some protesters actually push police officers and even strike them. others chained themselves to the entrance of wells fargo. more officers came in on foot and patrol cars suited up and -- people suited up in riot gear to try to get a handling on the situation. we spoke to some people who work here in the financial district. some were annoyed by the demonstrations and others are amused. >> if they stay out of my way, that's final i commute. i also understand they have a right to speak and do what they want to do. >> reporter: this protest was time to coins side with the two- year anniv

tara moriarty is live to explain what's expected to happen once the hearing begins. >> reporter: prosecutors would not speak to us this morning. but details are emerging that could make this a difficult case for -- for joseph naso to fight. he's representing himself. he's charged with killing four northern california women with matching initials in the 1970s and '90. one of them car men colognes who -- carmen cologne whose body was -- was found in 197 in contra costa county. investigators say the dna under her fingernails could match naso. and we spoke to some women to came to the -- came to the courtroom today. we want the court to take violence against women and other seriously. we do feel the illegal status makes it looks like he's getting attention for the violence he's done. >> reporter: now according to a probable cause statement naso may have used his then-wife's -- then-wife's pantyhose to strangle a woman whose body was found in fairfax in 1977. a hearing will get underway in an hour. it if the evidence stacks out this case will go to trial. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> n

[ sirens ] >> reporter: this morning firefighters received a call for an apartment complex off of madden avenue and the video shows how crews had to move quickly because the second story was gloved. 40 peopleee -- engulfed. 40 people were evacuated. they upgraded to a three-alarm fire which means 60 firefighters were battling this blaze. >>> it was a heavy fire multiple floors of the apartment complex and we know there is a lot of residence who live in this -- residents who live in this facility. >> reporter: only one person had injury from the fire and the rest was stress related. this is a senior apartment complex so you can imagine how scary it was. neighbors lent a helping hand. no word on how this fire started or even which room is started in. back here live investigators were on the scene and the flam

ktvu tara moriarty joins us now with what police are doing this morning and why they are having a tough time catching the suspect. tara. >> reporter: this is a pretty stubborn burglar. we are here at the near chestnut and this is a cop car you can see here. there are five officers that are staking out this guy. if we pan up we can see where we are. this is the landmark. this is coyte tower you see right there. this light that is shining that is where police believe the suspect is hiding. you can see where the big ladder truck. a big fire truck and those lights are shining right on the area where they believe he is hiding. if we pan up to the top of the hill, you can see a house with a light on. that is where police say the man broke in and stole a ring. a woman saw him called 911 and when the building manager appeared authorities say the suspect pushed him and jumped over a balcony and down a sheer cliff. >> if you look at the hillside, it's pretty treacherous. the brush is pretty? tough there. we're not going to risk someone's life going after a burglar suspect now. we'll wait until da

ktvu tara moriarty has arrived to the scene of a shooting in richmond. what can you tell us at this point? >> reporter: we are told they are searching for the gunman right now. i don't know if you can see the tail end of the train. it just pulled out of the intersection where we are standing right here. now the train was stopped for about an hour and a half as police continue to comb the area. they are not talking to us right now. from what we can gather of the freight train. it was on its way from oakland to richmond when the operator spotted a man lying in the ground next to the tracks over there to the right hand side. we will step out of the way here. because there is people here. if you can pan off in the distance here you can see the building over there. they are thinking there was a gunman perched on top of that building that may have shot a bicyclist in the legs we are told. he was lying on the train tracks right next to the tracks actually on the ground when the train operator came through, noticed him stopped the train and called police. we are

tara moriarty joins us with more on what the neighbors are saying, tara?this jack in the box has not been open since december 6th and that's because of an incident involving a cal firefighter. he got into a brawl with another customers at 2:30 thanksgiving morning. police say that customer then followed the man to a nearby gas station and ran him over with his suv. single father and former marine and call firefighter has been in critical condition and they have discovered jack in the box has been working without a permit. now the owner is trying to get that permit but some local her chance are trying to fight it. they say it is a magnet for drunken brawls and they are planning a meeting at 6:30 at city hall. a lot of the businesses are not open just yet but we plan on getting reaction from them about this jack in the box. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >>> they are calling for all airbus planes to be grounded because of the discovery of cracks on the wings. they say the cracks can be fixed during the routine maintenance checks and they say the cracks w

we're live in berkeley i'm tara moriarty. >>> time 6:35. some pretty tense moments. a private pilot flying from southern california to here in the bay area was intercepted by two u.s. fighter jets. that is after air traffic controllers lost radio contact with the 172. now when the air traffic controllers couldn't talk with the pilots as he neared month ray a pair of f-16s were sent out to intercept that plane. radio contact was reestablished. the private plane did land safely. >>> 6:35. emergency responders in san jose were kept busy this new years because of a string of violence. several stabbings and shootings happened on new years eve. one was stabbed at midnight. then on ridge glen ray gunfire wounded a man and juvenile. on skull drive a fight broke out among teenagers and six of them went to the hospital with stab wounds. >> i have been here more than 15 years. and it's not like that. it's not like that. maybe it's people that come and decide to make parties and it happens. >> three more incidents happened in the early morning hours. police call the violence unf

tara moriarty is here with the details.nderstand there's new information about the domestic violence trial in in case as well. >> reporter: that's right. you know what? jim hammer, a former prosecutor for the d. anklth's office will be meet be with -- meeting with us to sort of weigh in on this new -- weigh in on this new information. the information that we've obtained about this woman is that she will file some type of complaint, not sure if it will be with police or the d.a.'s's office but it will -- d.a.'s office but it will allege abuse, possibly physical during her relationship with the sheriff. now, the sheriff has said through his attorney he has never physically abused anyone. mayor lee met with the sheriff to see if he will step aside during the trial. he said he will not. he will not take pay and he will not handle any disciplinary actions within the department for the time being. the sheriff is due back tomorrow to try to get a court order modified. some of his supporters will be rallying here in the afternoon o

tara moriarty joins us now. we understand neighbors say this restaurant has been a magnet for violence. >> reporter: that's true. neighbors say this is one of the only places to eat when the bars let out at 1:00, 2:00 in the morning and therefore, a lot of people come here inebriated. this area is pretty small inside and outside as well. there's a lot of tension, people say, in this area. if you come in here and you -- over here and you look at this sign, it will show you that this particular jack in the box has been shut down since december 6th. that's on the heels of an incident involving a cal firefighter here. 29-year-old albert bartel got into a brawl with another customer at 2:30, thanksgiving morning at the jack in the box off 11th and geary. police say that customer followed bartel to a nearby gas station and ran him over with his suv. bartel a former marine and single father has been in critical condition with a traumatic brain injury ever since at a bay area hospital. on his facebook support page his m

tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >>> well classes will not resume until tomorrow at one san francisco school. however the students thought they would be going back today but everything changed because of a damaging fire just before christmas. kraig debro is joining us live from the creative arts charter school. kraig? >> reporter: kids are not too broken up about the extra day of vacation. but you may recall december 22nd, this is one of the three buildings that burned in the fire. you can see some of the boarded up window frames but in the back you don't see the tall window chimney which was teaterring about ready to fall onto the school. this school was already under reservation -- renovation but because of the chimney damage they suffered, they are deciding to push back the start of the school day because of renovations. now according to the school principal, $25,000 worth of damage was caused to the school and you can see the construction stuff is still in the parking lot. they are still continuing to work on the school, but what they will do until they can remedy the situation, i

live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> time is 5:34. arraignment will continue today for the man accused of three sexual assaults in san francisco's mission district. 32-year-old frederick dozier is facing 26 felony charges for the assaults which happened between june and december of last year. the charges include attempted murder, robbery and sexual assault. police say dozier admitted to taking part in the crimes. >>> well some new details about the serial murder case against 78-year-old joseph naso. the retired photographer is accused of killing 24 women between 1977 and 1994. a preliminary hearing is underway in marin county. the independent journal reports during the testimony yesterday, a nevada state investigator talked about a diary found in naso's home in reno. in that diary, the investigator says naso wrote about raping women. but naso told the court that raping in his culture means making out or scoring. naso has pled not guilty. >>> outrage is pouring in from across the world. coming up at 5:45. what the pentagon is now sayin

ktvu tara moriarty joins us now with what police have been doing now for hours and why they have not been able to make a move. tara. >> reporter: police have established a perimeter around the suspect. we're here at the base of telegraph here near coit tower. we have a patrol car that is stationed at the bottom of the hill. there is one at the top of the hill. the suspect may be difficult to catch because he may be familiar with this territory. police just told us they found a sweatshirt, water bottles, and other items that indicate someone may have been in this brush before. police say around 5:00 last night the man broke into the apartment building on the top of the hill where the deck light is on. the man stole jewelry. when the man was caught by a woman she called 911. the building manager appeared and had a confrontation with the woman. police say he has been hiding in the brush along the cliff right where the big light is shining for about 12 hours now. but officers are not giving up. >> the fact it's nighttime doesn't help. it's thfactthis is a very sheer cliff with very thick

. >>> ktvu channel 2 news' tara moriarty joins us from the scene with information about the people who live there, tara? >> reporter: we are here a block or two away from where this fire broke out and we can see a couple of ambulances and some emergency crews and we have been trying to gather some information about what happened. the fires started at a scene your apartment complex off madden avenue at quarter to 2:00 this morning and that call came in and within 12 minutes it went to a second alarm and a few minutes after that a third alarm was called. one person suffered burns to their feet. we spoke it a police officer at the scene and he tells me 20 - 30 people have been displaced by the fire so we will get in there and talk to some firefighters and find out more information and bring it to you as it becomes available to us. >>> a fire in san francisco started shortly after 1:00 a.m. at an apartment house in chinatown. one man was taken to the hospital for burns and smoke inhalation. his condition is not known at this point. the fire forced more than 50 people out of their homes and

live from berkeley tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >>> police are looking for a 22- year-old man suspected of stabbing his mother. police say the woman was stabbed and beaten at her home. when a roommate intervened, the woman was able to escape to a nearby neighbor's home. when police arrived they were not able to locate the woman's son. the woman is expected to recover. >>> a hit-and-run of a pedestrian. perfect medics -- paramedics treated her and was taken to the hospital where we are waiting to hear about her condition. the car that hit her is a white honda accord and we do not have a description for the driver. >>> jury selection is set to begin in the trial of edwin ramos. he is facing three counts of murder in the killing of a father and two of his sons. he killed tony and his sons in june of 2008 thinking they were rival gang members. the family was just returning from a picnic at the time. >>> a five-year-old was shot and killed at his father's taco truck. they are calling for an end to the violence. gabriel martinez was shot shortly before 9:00 friday night. the shooter was a man

ktvu tara moriarty will is a live report from the crash scene coming up in our next half hour. >>> crews are still on the scene following a huge fire in san francisco. it started shortly after 8:00 last night on the sonic avenue near hate street. knd joins us live with what firefighters are saying about the cause. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is a couple blocks south of hate at waller. you can look at one of the houses that was effected by the fire. christmas tree still in the window. look at the stairs a lot of lines going in. we talked to a firefighter this morning. she said they are on fire watch. they are making sure there are no flair ups. investigators say they warned a second alarm because the fire was so intensely between the two homes. they got the call shortly after 8:00 last night. battalion chief told us the flames burned between the two fires. homes that were effected kept a close watch from their windows. homes in the city are tough so close together they touch each other. people in the path of the fire say fire crews quickly gave them the order to evacuate

tara moriarty joins us live. you have just spoke in to en to a family member, what do they say? >> reporter: i spoke to a sister of one of the victims, she says she has received many phone calls, it turns out the victim is a prominent member of the asian community and lives here, many believe the suspect did not randomly pick this house to rob. ambulances whisked away two women stabbed with a knife and bludgeoned with a hammer by a home intruder. >> shocking. >> one of those women 76-year- old rose chung, who she says is a fixture in this neighborhood. >> everybody loved her. she is very cheerful. everybody here knows that she is well off, owning many restaurants but she lives in this modest house and somebody must have known this fact. >> police say the suspect an asian male broke into the home, brutally attacked her and rifled through drawers. >> the second victims, a 56- year-old asian was delivering food when she interrupted this home invasion and was also attacked by the suspect. >> that victim works at this icebox, a restaurant owned by chung, you could see a trail of bloo

ktvu's tara moriarty arrived on the scene a few minutes ago, right? >> reporter: that's right. the folks who live here string lights every holiday and a lot of folks come and look at them. so they are really upset and devastated for the family. this fire, you can sort of feel it in your lungs. it's so cold. it's sort of lingering on the ground. one family member was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. all made it out okay when the fire broke out. >> as the water is starting to run down the hill, it's freezing. it's approximately 28 degrees. we're having the freeze and the ice and that's creating danger for our firefighters and residents in the area. >> reporter: some firefighters have slipped already. the salt trucks have arrived. this house is a complete loss. fire officials believe it started in the living room where the family had their wood stove burning. back here live you can see the water is still pouring down the street. one neighbor experienced flooding in their garage. so crews are sandbagging that graunkg. also still fighting this fire here here
