ktvu tara moriarty is live in the oakland hills. and tara, there is a red flag warning up there. >> reporter: that is right. we are hearing that oakland hills -- we are here in the oakland hills. cars are having to navigate around these two fallen limbs. there is toppled trees up and down this street. city worker showed up a half hour ago. he said it may be some time before crews get to these branches. now for spotlights above 1,000 feet in the east bay hills and diablo range we have that red flag warning in effect. just down the road northbound the planes are completely blocked by a large fallen tree. crews will be here chopping it up and taking it away. they are trying to get it clear before classes start. firefighters were busy overnight. high winds toppled trees. pg&e had to cut power while fire crews snuffed out the flames. now fire officials say they want people to call 911 immediately if you see smoke. if something sparks it could go up quickly. the wind gusts are supposed to be in the opposite direction of where they are nor

live from oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >>> there is no strike for now but many commuters following through with their alternate plans they made just in case. alex savidge at the ferry terminal with that part of the story. >> reporter: potentially it could be more crowded because of the uncertainty surrounding this labor dispute. a lot of people made other plans, backup plans on how they were going to get into san fransisco. you have to imagine people might stick with those plans even though the trains are running this morning. ferry's a popular option as we saw during the last strike. could potentially see more people than normal taking those ferries even today into the city. ferries will be operating on a normal schedule today. that's the word because there is no b.a.r.t. strike. during the last strike in july, the ferry was a popular option. commuters lined up early. and if a strike does happen, the system will be trying to accommodate a lot more commuters. 200,000 people who use b.a.r.t. every day would need to find other ways to get into the city and the ferry would b

ktvu's alex savage covering the special charter buses. first let's go to tara moriarty covering the striking workers and the failed negotiations. >> reporter: we're 7 hours into the strike and we know a lot of b.a.r.t. riders are extremely frustrated by this strike. but we have heard a lot of people driving by here at the lake merritt b.a.r.t. station honking in support of the workers here. picketers frustrated with the way talks broke down. after six months of negotiations and a cool down period, no negotiation. and a federal mediator announced his job was done and he could not get the two sides to agree to a contract. the union says they agreed on pay, health and benefits but not work rules. the union said b.a.r.t. presented the switch in the final minutes of talks. b.a.r.t. defended its actions. >> this contract, this labor negotiation is all about the long-term sustainability of b.a.r.t. and its contribution to the economy and the environment of the bay area. >> and i actually question the ability of the district to understand how to get a collective bargaining abil

ktvu's tara moriarty is live at the richmond b.a.r.t.tation to tell us about the new hope for a settlement. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. union leaders announced last night they will not be issuing a 72-hour strike notice and they've always done that in the past. a lot of people are thinking that perhaps this could mean that the two sides are closer to ironing out a deal. now, last night in oakland, both sides emerged very quietly from the building where they've been carrying on the negotiations. they are not saying much to the media because of a gag order issued by the mediator. experts say silence is usually an indication a deal is closer. although a gag order earlier this summer didn't make a difference at the bargaining table didn't make a difference. we asked passengers what they thought about the union's announcement. >> right. but -- i don't know. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. >>> 7:05. just hours ago, a san jose house was engulfed in flames. flames and smoke were shooting through the roof by the time firefighters got there. but everyone inside got out safely. now, ktvu's janine de la vega is live outside the home right now to show us the damage and also tell us what firefighters found inside. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. as you can see the home is still standing. much of the damage occurred in the attic where firefighters found a shrine with lights. there's damage to that room and all of the prayer items inside were destroyed. firefighters arrived and found flames coming out of the home near virginia. four people were inside the home when it started at 3:30 a.m. but were able to escape. the homeowner called 911 after hearing a crackling sound coming from the attic and seeing the fire. crews were able to knock down the flames within 2020 minutes and save the home -- 20 minutes and save the home. fire officials say it appears the fire started

live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >>> there's no strike for now. we may see more commuters exploring alternate options. alex savidge is live at the oakland ferry terminal with their story. i'm sure a lot of them are stressed out alex. >> reporter: they are certainly frustrated with the uncertainty of the situation. a lot of people probably made backup plans, made a plan to take the ferry today just in case there was a strike, and you have to imagine that some of those commuters may stick with those plans even though the trains are running this morning. the first ferry of the morning just left from the oakland terminal a half hour ago. a handful of people were on board as that boat headed off to san fransisco. we will have to see if the ferries become more crowded than usual as we move throughout the morning. during the last b.a.r.t. strike in july, the ferry was certainly a popular option with commuters who lined up early here at the oakland terminal and other terminals in the east bay. we know because of the fact that there will be no b.a.r.t. str
