ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live from the city with the recent spike in pedestrian deaths there. >> reporter: we're here at octavia and market streets. the most dangerous intersection in the city according to the police chief. this is where the freeway empties into the street. recently the city has seen a spike in the number of pedestrian crashes. there were 21 deaths just last year. the most since 2007. yesterday, an elderly man was struck and killed in a crosswalk on sunset and yorba. the name of the driver is 71- year-old jenny ching. the chief says his department is going to work to curb accidents through sting operations and awareness programs. >> i think the one that got everyone's april tension was on new year's eve when sophia lui was killed in the crosswalk with her mother. i think the sign that people have spoken about that's at the site, pedestrians, bicycles and cars, please slow down. >> reporter: now, chief suhr says that pedestrian crashes are up 43% for the -- [no audio] >> reporter: that person is now in critical condition. the chief says that san francisco's popula

ktvu tara moriarty is there now. you just talked to police. >> reporter: that is right. we want to mention that vanness is now open. it was closed earlier between pacific as well as jackson but it has opened now just in time for the morning commute. i spoke to the inspector on the phone just a couple minutes ago and she did inform us that indeed the driver of the car has been arrested for vehicle manslaughter and felony hit and run as well. investigators are trying to figure out exactly where the driver struck the pedestrian. witness says he was driving as fast on vanness as he would on a freeway. this is the fourth deadly crash involving a pedestrian since the new year and the third one on vanness alone. police say at 1:00 this morning the driver of a silver compact hit the man. we're not sure if he was in the crosswalk but the force of the impact was pretty great because the windshield and the roof of the car sustained heavy damage. it's possible he carried the victim on the hood of his car for a block before stopping. a month ago a 38-year-old man was struck and kille

exactly what is burning at this point but we do have a crew on the way and right now, we have ktvu's tara moriarty on the phone with us right now. tara, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, i'm actually driving through the streets right now, sort of trying to get away from the fire. it's absolutely enormous. the billowing cloud of black smoke can be seen for miles. i actually spotted it on my way 101 southbound, and when i got a little close to the fire, i don't know if you have that video yet, i shot some video off my cell phone. but there were threes loud crackling noises. there's something very combustible in the warehouse. this is sort of like an industrial area. we're near mckinnon. i can't get a cross because, again, i'm driving but there is a lot of people that are being told to leave the area, a lot of fire crews here on scene. they were actually pulling up after i arrived. so they keep sending more and more. i haven't had a chance to talk with an official. a couple of police are cordoning off certain streets because they need to drag the hose lines, connect to the fire hydrants. so pe
