host: tara roberts. in your new autobiography, "written in the waters," you say you arrived in washington, d.c. in 2017 broke. what was the situation? guest: [laughter] yes. i have been running my own nonprofit for a number of years. running nonprofits are hard. [laughter] and yeah, it was time to close the nonprofit and to replenish my bank account. so, i took a job here in the city, and i came ready to rebuild all the things. and it was actually in 2016 when i got here. but, yeah, i came here ready to start anew and to rebuild from the past. host: where did you come from and what was the focus of the nonprofit? guest: so, i came from atlanta, and the nonprofit was focused on girls. it was a nonprofit that raised money for girl changemakers around the world. we wanted to empower girls to do great things in their communities. so, it was a great -- it was a great thing. but, this is one of the things i discovered once i got here. my true love and passion is really around storytelling and writing, and i st

host: tara roberts, you picked up that 100 pound phone, you said yes. what was your first experience in the water, putting on all the gear? guest: so, do you mean once i was certified? host: first time in your training. guest: i wasn't a scuba diver, didn't know anything about the ocean, but i loved the water. like, i grew up in pools, so i love to swim. when i put on the mask for the first time, i felt at home in the water. i was like, yes, i love this. and i get to stay down for a long period of time? i loved it. host: the breathing. that always freaks me out. [laughter] do you make yourself take a breath underwater? guest: yeah, it's tricky because your natural instinct is to breathe out of your nose. so, you do have to get used to it, which is why they train you in pools. so you're in shallow water. you can come right back up if you get nervous or if you get scared. but the more that you practice it, the easier it comes. and i will say that the club that i trained with, the underwater adventure seekers, which is the club that doc jones first found i
