tara mergener is in washington, good morning, tara. what is the latest on this political tug-of-war? >> good morning, betty. the august 2nd deadline to raise the government's borrowing authority is fast approaching, and republicans are now hinting they may at least be willing to talk about taxes, something the president insists on. >> the debt ceiling should not be something that is used as a gun against the heads of the american people to extract tax breaks for corporate jet owners or oil and gas companies that are making billions of dollars because the price of gasoline has gone up so high. >> reporter: the president wants to end existing tax breaks for owners of corporate jets and subsidies for energy companies. republicans appear ready to talk. house republican leader eric cantor said yesterday that if the president wants to talk about loopholes, we'll be glad to talk. while adding that eliminating corporate tax breaks should be coupled with spending cuts elsewhere. that may mean cuts in medicare and social security, something demo

what's going on, tara? >> reporter: well caltrans engineers are supposed to be arriving shortly, within the half hour and chp arrived on scene. they told us we are going to be moving because it's not very safe in this area. but if you take a look down here you can see the sinkhole is pretty big, about 30 feet across and you can actually put your hand underneath the median there and it will come out on the other side. it is -- it has forced crews to shut down one lane of highway 87 southbound in the alma avenue on-ramp. caltrans discovered the problem tuesday, they came out, they poured some gravel and then last night they compressed that gravel and found that it sunk about a foot below the earth's surface and you can see where that concrete is exposed, all the cracks there. so they shut down some lanes on the freeway at 9:00 last night. we are close to west virginia street just to give you an idea of where we are on 87, and again one southbound lane is closed as is the alma avenue off-ramp. but the on-ramp

tara. >> reporter: good morning. it's still pretty windy out here, dave. as you can see still pretty dry. and if we take a look across the street we're here off port chicago way and driftwood we're getting a better look at the damage that was done by last night's fire. it's all charred black and embers were actually still falling from the trees when we arrived around 3:30 this morning. now this fire began around 9:30 last night. crews from contra costa county fire and several other agencies battled the flames until after midnight. firefighters were chasing quite a few wild fires last night. at least three of them spread out over a mile in different directions. one fire even threatened some buildings off of port chicago highway. now no word on exactly officially what sparked these fires but witnesses tell us there was a lot of illegal firework activity in the area last night. >> there are a lot of fireworks out. our fire marshals are out trying to determine what the cause of the fires are. but we don't have safe and s

good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. police are now reviewing surveillance video hoping it will provide clues to what happened. we are here at the civic center station. below us is where they shot and killed a man last night. around 9:45 an ambulance rushed the suspect to a hospital. the initial 911 call came in at 9:30. police say the suspect was on the civic center station platform appearing intoxicated. two bart officers arrived at 9:45 and within one minute three shots were fired. at least two bullets striking the suspect. now initial reports indicate the suspect may have thrown a bottle at officers. one officer did suffer cuts to his arm. >> there is evidence at the scene. broken glass on the platform area. two open knives. that will be further investigated. at this point in time we have two credible witnesses we interviewing right now. >> reporter: since the oscar grant shooting on january 1st, 2009 bart says it has doubled its training for officers. now all we know about the suspect is that he is a white male betw

tara. >> reporter: the manager of the u-haul business showed up 15 minutes ago. they said they had problems in the past with people stealing fuel from the facility. so they have parked a bunch of u-haul trucks in this pathway to block access and that ended up costing firefighters valuable time this morning. you can see that the police have actually quarantined off this area. this is again where eight trucks were burned. arson investigators tell us once it's light out which is about now they will be bringing the dogs out here to sniff for accelerant. the deputy fire marshal has not said if it's suspicious. flames broke out just past midnight between the trucks which are parked in the lot in the middle of a hotel and a tire store. there are propane tanks on the lot. >> we set up a ladder operation off of 237 just as a precaution. we didn't end up using them at all. just as a safety net because they had pretty good it could have pulled a lot of water in there. >> reporter: all of the evacwees are become inside safe and sound. officials tell us they will probably be

tara moriarty is in our newsroom now. they have all details of this. >> reporter: survivors grabbed ice chests, life jackets, and life rafts to help them swim to shore. when they reached inside of the coolers, that is where they found hersheys kisses and melted ice. it helped them stay alive for 16 hours in the waters. 35 crew members and passengers were able to swim to shore or get rescued by the mexican navy. now survivors worry that some of the missing may not have made it out of the boat since the storm struck so suddenly and hard at 1:30 in the morning on sunday while most people were sleeping. we spoke to may lee of san ramon who's husband's done is still missing. he called her before boarding the boat. >> he said i just wanted to hear your voice before we got on the ship because we are getting on in a few minutes. so i just wanted to hear you again. hear your voice before i left. this is the last chance i will speak to you in a few days. i said okay and i said thank you and that was it. >> reporter: lee shared to u

good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. you know they're not giving us a time line just yet, but if you take a look behind me you can see east bay med has been back hire. they dug a really deep hole and they're going down there with the ladder to inspect the pipe that burst. crews tell us this is an eight inch cast iron water main break. what they'll do is remove that section of line that ruptured and replace it so they can turn the water back on. as we mentioned about 100 people in the area around mt. diablo boulevard and village center drive now without water. it happened around 10:30 last night. the water flooded in nearby office building and flowed down the street into a garage. the homeowner just moved here from seattle and all his moving boxes are water logged. >> i threw my shoes on and looked out the sliding glass door and the backyard was probably five inches deep of water. >> reporter: again, these workers will be out here until they get the pipe fixed. you can tell they're pumping out some water right now. hopefu

live in san jose, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> tara, time now 5:32. >>> investigations happening right now after a dangerous device was found at a bay area bus stop, so-called soda bomb was found there. ktvu's jade hernandez is in marin county. what do you know? >> reporter: someone is filling bottles like these with a concoction that explodes in the hands of anyone who picks them up. sheriff's deputies found a device similar to that right here at the marin city bus stop. deputies found the device before 2:00 yesterday afternoon. no one was hurt but what could have happened is what worries county authorities. the mixture of common cleaners and aluminum foil placed inside of the bottle result in a gas built-up and then an eventual explosion. we have a youtube video which shows devices being detonated. back in may police warned residents about these devices. e-mail sent out to all schools since a few months before police had arrested a group of teenagers setting off drano bombs in an open space in january. we checked with the marin county sheriff's office, they haven't ar

in mountain view, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> police are look for four people who tried to set fire to a neighborhood. nicknamed the toilet paper arsonist, they were caught ton surveillance cam today, lighting roll -- camera, lighting the rolls. the video was taken on july 4th by a neighborhood camera along a bell-used walking -- well- used talking trail. but it was kids who alerted the father about this. >> i got over here and found different areas of toilet paper rolls over here on fire. i could not get this one put out. it was already the size of my front yard. >> firefighter the arrived in time to -- firefighter the arrived in time to put that fire out. homeowners posted fliers along the trail about the fires. but for some reason most of those fliers were torn down. >>> sheriff deputies in san mateo county are looking for the burglars who broke into a church rec room. it happened earlier this month on the village church. the thieves pried open a side door and made off with thousands of dollars worth of electronic equipment. they also stole a dvd player and a hand if ful

tara. >> reporter: neighbors tell us 24 people had to be evacuated because of propane tanks that are stored in this lot where the u-haul trucks are stored. you can see the foam here on the ground where the firefighters were and the damaged truck seem to be over in that general direction. as far as the propane tanks the one that firefighters had the most concern was the big tall white one. flames broke out around midnight between trucks which are parked in a lot in the middle of a hotel. people in the hotel and a row of houses that border the lot tell us to get out. luckily fire crews were able to protect the tanks. eight u-haul trucks were damaged and it was a tough fire to get to. >> the access was a definite difficulty for us. we had to stretch multiple two and a half inch lines probably 250-400 feet back there which is pretty long ways back in there for us. >> reporter: now there was a slight pop that you could actually hear from the gas tank exploding on one of the trucks. that is according to fire officials. all of the evacwees are safe and sound. we will hear from one man that

good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. we've just learned that crews are actually searching the land near the san francisco international airport. we'll explain the reason for that in just a minute. first we want to mention that the main focus of this search is taking place out on the water. we're here just north of the san mateo bridge. and this is where we believe kathy left last night around 5:00 to go wind surfing with her husband. she was only supposed to be gone for about half an hour. he says he lost sight of her and she still has not been found. now right now the coast guard has expanded its search to hunters point in san francisco, along the shoreline and in the marina as well. rescue crews have been scouring the bay for the 61-year-old wind surfer since her husband reported her missing about 7:00 last night. crews have night vision goggles and they are studying the drift patterns of the bay to try to find her. >> concentrating mainly in the main shipping channel of the bay. the tide was going out. so we kind of k

tara. >> reporter: that is right. we spoke to the deputy fire marshal and he's actually keeping us out of the area of the parking lot because he's going to bring in dogs later to sniff for excel rant. the police are also here as you can see behind me. they have roped off this area. we are not allowed back in. they won't say if this fire is suspicious or not they believe it will take time to figure out the cause. flames broke out around midnight which are parked in a lot. two dozen people were told toe vacuate. >> my brother lives do downstairs and so he's disabled. the first thought was to get him out of his room. >> reporter: the pop you just heard was most likely from a gas tank on one of the trucks exploding. that is according to fire officials. officials were most concerned about some propane tanks in the lot exploding and that is why they ordered the evacuation. all of the evacwees are back inside safe and sound. damage estimates should be high on this they tell me. we are live in mountain view i'm tara moriarty.

tara moriarty is joining us in the newsroom with the details of the amazing survival stories. >> reporter: some survey veries drank melted ice and ate hierarchy kisses to -- hershey kisses to stay alive. many passengers and crew members were in the water for 16 hours before they were rescued or reached land. some of the 35 crew members and passengers who made it were able to grab life jackets but u.s. coast guard and mexican navy are still looking for the seven u.s. tourists that have not been found. search teams are expected to dive down to the boat to see if they got caught on board. now we recently spoke to may lee wife of fisherman donald lee who is clinging to hope her husband will be found alive. he just put his daughters through college and excited to take a vacation. >> it was more about the camaraderie and being with his friends. all yearlong he would look forward to this. >> reporter: lee shared with us this video of a similar fishing trip her husband organized last year. this was the third time he took the trip aboard. now lee is in a group photo right here on the far right han
