marines killed in the battle of tarawa during world war ii.filmmaker steven barber, he is director of "until they are home." steve welcome into the war room. >> thank you very much. great to be here. >> great to have you. tell us who are the people searching for these remains? >> they are some of the greatest human beings, it is called jpac, and it is made up of our air force, navy, marines and all of our service people. they go around the world looking for our fallen. and 88,000 missing from world war ii. it's staggering. i got to be with them for 48 days in the battle site of tarawa. which is about the site of central park. so it is quite a challenge. >> the battle of tarawa is not one that many of us have heard about. how did you get involved in the project? >> i was the messenger. i'm an accidental filmmaker, you might remember -- not saying that you are old -- but eddie albert in a tv show called "green acres." >> sure. >> i interviewed him, and he told me about this battle that i never heard of, and he was on the cover of life magazine,

it took us five years to get to the first tarawa hour.will take less than 12 months to get to the next. to put that in context another way, the entire solar industry in the u.s. produced around 1.7 tarawa hours of electricity last year. this small company in partnership with really phenomenal large companies is having an impact that is approximately 2/3 of that, and we feel like we are just getting started. i feel confident that our ability to have an impact will grow strongly because of the partnerships that the mayor has highlighted, the partnership with facebook. the partnership with honeywell. to be imagine the thermostat. particularly the partnership we have with utilities like pg&e. i think there is someone here from the city of palo alto utilities, and we have worked with for a long time. utilities like back -- you guys are brave. utilities have had the same business model and the same basic delivery for a very long time. to recognize and appreciate that your customers could become real partners is a really brave thing to do in an

that's where many marines who fought on the island of tarawa never made it home.er: the documentary is entitled, until they are home. it's an incredible story about loyalty and patriotism and a 93-year-old veteran who simply refuses to give up. over three days in november, 1943 more than a thousand americans fell in what is known as the bloodiest battle in marine's history. >> i had landed, marines of the second division and saw the slaughter taking place. >> reporter: leon cooper was a navy ensign in the first american offensive in the theater in world war ii. we took the island and after d-day we left. the shoreline became covered with war debris and trash after we left. >> i went there with the objective of doing something about getting the garbage cleaned up. i learned during that visit the remains of possibly hundreds of americans still lay where they fell. >> reporter: more than 500 soldiers who fought in the battle are still unaccounted for. cooper made it his mission to bring every last one home but hit a dead-end. >> couldn't get the attention of any of t
