what do you make of this news with regard to teamsters, and potentially uber drivers forming a union?this is sort of an emerging market space. there is a natural give-and-take. i think the announcement today, the settlement is a win-win, a good step in the right direction. uber saying, we'll do more to self-regulate. i do think the market has fits and starts, but this is an overall win for uber. emily: uber and travis kalanik said that drivers but you flex ability despite this lawsuit. but a lawyer for the drivers said that no court had decided whether uber drivers are employers or independent contractors, and the debate will not end here. sternse stands as a warning to companies that play fast and loose with classifying their workers as independent contractors who do not receive protections. they had just settled this, but no court has made the decision here. professor, what do you make of the broader implications for the sharing economy and uber going forward? >> well, as far as uber is concerned this is a big win for them. as you pointed out, uber's biggest source of valuation risk

there are over 270,000, a quarter million, teamster retirees alone across our country who are being affected and of course some of them were with us today. over the last year, i heard extensively from retirees who will see their pensions dramatically reduced, dramatically reduced, if in fact these cuts are proved by the u.s. treasury department. these americans did everything our country asked them to do as productive citizens. they went to work. they worked for decades. they worked for companies that matched that money and they thought they would have a secure retirement guaranteed. the law says their retirement income will be guaranteed. but now it is a promise not being kept. and they are facing a stark reality. these workers earned their benefits. no one has the right to take them away. imagine working for 30 years as a truck driver, where your work takes you away on long trips for weeks at a time, time away from your family, time away from your community, countless missed family gatherings and life moments you'll never get back, but you're a good worker so you do it. it's a good job. wi

i recently met with teamsters and union workers and retirees in bismarck and in fargo. their stories quite honestly were heartbreaking. they couldn't understand how if they did everything right why was their retirement being taken away from them. they can't live in a country that just enables these workers and retirees to be left behind. they can't understand who is fighting for them. they and we must stand up and say this is wrong. we must stand up for hard work. and we must protect their pensions and make sure all north dakotaians have a secure retirement. so i want to tell just a few of their stories today. i'm going to start with dennis gainsforth from jamestown. he worked for u.s.p. for 31 years -- unchtsz p.s. for 31 years. he needs surgery on one of his knees because ever decades as a night mechanic. he's also helping financially to take care of his son who had a stroke and his wife who needs back surgery. under the proposed cuts, his pension would be slashed by 50% as a result dennis who is 72 years old is now back at work driving a public bus in jamestown. tina
