and it was in the 1934, 1935, 1936 time period when the growth of the uaw, the growth of the teamsters union in detroit really kind of changed attitudes within the plant. the big strikes or the flint sit down and there were some others in chrysler and floored being -- ford being the last one to go was really quite a contentious change. these were not happy times. union workers were fighting very hard against the automobile management that didn't want to give up any kind of control within the plant. they wanted worker bees to get paid, and go home, and not talk back. and the union guys thought that they had a pretty good feel for what was wrong with some of the manufacturing, both from the injury standpoint, from the pay standpoint, and just ways of doing things better. and these things turned into battles. they turned into fights that involved clubs. we've had a couple of clubs that were loaned to us from the walter ruth library across the street. these were basically automobile parts that were co-opted to be weapons. and these were the things the guys, the union guys, who were fightin

we've been blocked by everyone from law enforcement to my friends at the teamsters, and that proposal has not seen success in sacramento. at our last meeting, i called on the san francisco police officers association to call for a carve out for the city of san francisco and i am happy to say that they responded in the affirmative, and i am hopeful that this moves forward in sacramento. if sacramento does not get it done, it would not be a san francisco first, mr. givner, if we went our own way. we did that in same sex marriage. we did that back in the day as it related to needle exchange which was not legal under state law. we declared an emergency and did it any way. to that end, if san francisco cannot get it done, i will be asking the city attorney to draft some policy ideas, even if they are accompanied by a cautionary memo as to how we can moderate discretionary speed enforcement, law be dammed. finally, i would like to adjourn this meeting in memory of ronnie sawyer, passed away this sunday in north beach of pancreatic cancer. ronald was the best of what north beach has to offer
