this week, the national black caucus of the teamsters union endorsed vice president kamala harris. its -- sean o'brien, who spoke at the republican convention, said the union plans -- after both parties convention. joining me joining me is james kirby. thank you for being with us tonight. let's start with this. why did you ultimately decide to endorse harris-walz ticket before the national teamsters have made their announcement of whatever they are going to do? >> you know, we made that decision on tuesday morning. we was less than 90 days before election, and we know that we cannot chance 45 to be re- elected. not after harris and biden championed the savior of our pension funds. not after they took a stand, president biden. the writers when they were on strike. tim being -- championing organizers across this country. all of our members that were affected by the pension cuts. we've got to take our hat off to vice president harris for helping us and being there for us whenever una -- nobody else was. >> teamster president sean o'brien angered some teamsters and others in the labor

the washington post is reporting that the teamsters president o'brien will not be speaking at the dnc, but the unionve a presence there . we know that o'brien did request a speaking slot, but has yet to receive a written response from the dnc. what can you tell us about what this teamsters representation might look at, look like at the dnc. >> i'm not totally sure what their representation will look like, but i know that there are leaders for the country and delegates, and it's a lot of delicates for here is that our in the leadership in the teamsters union. >> trump's comments on monday that i just kind of mentioned, praising elon musk for firing workers, it really comes as, you know, a slap in the face of o'brien, doesn't it? this was a guy was promoting and defending trump at the rnc, and he turned around and basically insulted those very same workers. >> i wrote a letter on january 31 reminding our leadership who this man was, and he actually proved me right, that he hasn't changed. he claimed that he changed, when he met with our leadership in washington, d.c. back in february, but like i say,

i began to think about trade union ism as queer or when i was working and started working on my new book, teamsters metropolis, which helps explain why unions became so large and so powerful during last upsurge in the 1950s. historians often described two distinct sexual geographies that defined mid-twentieth century u.s. eighties. we rightly argue acts of public sexual dissent often take place in one's sexual geography. one in the old neighborhoods of the central city where people on the margin because of their race, sexual desire or gender performance claimed space in a hostile world. the opposite of this formation was the dominant sexual geography of the era, a suburban landscape by the single family home state, enforced racial segregation and heterosexual domesticity. we often assume that the labor movement was the handmaiden for the second of these two geographies, both because unions were staunch advocates for the family wage, which gave us the husband breadwinner and the dependent wife. and because labor history is a field has so often over centered the stories of conservative white, male, i

i know there's a lot of teamsters leaders who are begging the union head to make an endorsement. what's going on with them? >> there's a lot going on. the head of the teamsters, sean o'brien, just the other day had a really stark critique of donald trump's appearance with elon musk. right, and where they were sort of joking about firing workers. and so the union actually had some very critical statements on social media about trump. that's a big deal. because i think they are starting to delineate there. the other thing is the black caucus of the teamsters, a substantial portion of the membership, just stepped out and endorsed kamala harris. obviously that doesn't speak for the whole union, but that speaks for a portion there. i think there's a lot of movement here. the question, of course, is, you know, when do you get kamala harris talking to the teamsters leadership directly? when does she go to talk to them? when perhaps does the teamsters leader come to this convention in chicago and speak? we don't know where that stands. that's the point where the things could come together
