long and hard about ted cruz. that's the reputation he earned and he kept running the same way once he moved onto south carolina. very few things had fingerprints leading back to the ted cruz campaign but they pointed back to his direction. congressman trey gowdy endorsed marco rubio. a fake facebook page showed he switched his endorsement from marco rubio to ted cruz. that was fake but that's south carolina. there was this gem put together by the ted cruz campaign ahead of the south carolina primary. it proports to show the real marco rubio. it's fake marco rubio photo shopped making it look like he was grinning like a goon and shaking hands with president obama when he was not. after south carolina, there was this video. it was not created by the ted cruz campaign. it was created and up loaded by the student newspaper at the university of pennsylvania. the tape shows marco rubio having a chance encounter with ted cruz folks, including ted cruz dad. the paper indicated that when marco rubio saw this young man rea

ted cruz is now calling out donald trump over a threatened lawsuit. cruz saying trump's threat stems from a cruz tv ad. the ad uses comments trump made to nbc back in 1999 when he said, he was, quote, very pro choice. ted cruz's message to trump, sue me. >> donald's lawyer sent our campaign a cease and desist letter. and this letter, i will say, having practiced law for many, many years, this letter is one of the most remarkable letters i've ever read. mr. trump's lawyers contend that that advertisement you just saw is, quote, material -- is an attempt to materially mislead the public. and indeed provides more detail. he says that this attack ad, is what he calls it, is, quote, not only completely disingenuous, but replete with lies, false, defamatory and destructive statements and down right fabrications. mr. trump's lawyer's letter goes on to say, the ad, quote, blatantly misrepresents to the public that mr. trump is pro choice. and nothing could be further from the truth. and the letter concludes, by threatening if we will not pull down the ad, that

we have been talking so much about ted cruz, his performance in this state tonight. what that campaign can expect in the days ahead. let's ask our correspondent who covers the cruz effort, haley jackson. are they ready for what's coming? >> reporter: yeah, tuesday is a huge day, it's a big day. you can expect donald trump will continue attacking cruz like he's been attacking him on these issues of being a liar, on issues of quote/unquote dirty tricks, you might say. a couple things stood out to me from cruz's remarks, he talked about the most important night of the campaign being one week from tonight. not the expectations game you might expect but the campaign, i can tell you, is feeling confident about how they will do specifically in texas. you heard the senator say he's ready to get home to texas. when he asked the campaign about how they're feeling about the fact cruz at least from our entrance polling has lost evangelicals, lost very conservatives to donald trump, the campaign, an aide telling me that that person is not losing sleep over it, talk to them on tues

ted cruz had 12,000 volunteers to get the cruz crew. they were organized on the ground. that matters in iowa. the fact that the donald trump campaign had virtually no organization on the ground. it is reported they did not pay for the infrastructure. volunteers did not know where to go or what to tell the supporters which precincts to go. that did not help donald trump. i think it is another part of the story here that it was ted cruz who benefitted. possibly marco rubio. ted cruz benefitted from the record turnout. >> no one can take away that trump can fill a room or stadium. that doesn't mean though that you have any type of actual ground game in the states moving forward. if what we know, iowa's first. if he doesn't do better when it comes to actual campaign on the ground, you have to do more than fly in and say 20,000 people show up and i'm going to give you 45-minute speech. it is easy to go to one of those. if you don't have the workers and volunteers that know what we are doing on the ground. this brings in the issue with the campaign staff. he had a lot of peopl

ted cruz is doing the same thing, but he's doing it differently. evangelicals in a different way than trump. there's no question that the gop establishment has no interest in a cruz nomination or a cruz presidency. in fact there's been a lot of debate among republicans in washington over who they fear more, a president trump or president cruz. so that's sort of -- despite the fact that cruz is neck and neck with rubio for second place position and he's promising to go on and go the distance, it's very hard to see how cruz does that if the establishment is rallying behind rubio and if trump has assumed the role as the anti-establishment candidate. >> let's talk about this incredible win of donald trump it has most certainly emboldened him in investigate anevada and people are saying he's unstoppable, this must be sending the anti-establishment crazy. will they rally around him or do they have a plan for down the track? >> that's a great question and what they're starting to do is give rubio the endorsements and money, a lot of money that used to go t

ted cruz, a pretty big winner tonight at least in these results showing up out of benton county. cruz followed by donald trump, marco rubio trailing in that benton county race. so that's a pretty interesting situation now in benton. the democratic side, they have 84% of their precincts reporting is so close on the democratic side. clinton and sanders in a slightly ahead. our kwwl political analyst is the associate professor of political science at the university of northern iowa. dr. chris larimer joins us with reaction tonight. chris, let's talk about the big ahead. >> dr. larimer: certainly the totals, obviously ted cruz, and thinking about ted cruz in context of what's happened over the last two caucus cycles is quite interesting. we had 2008 with mike huckabee, 2012 with rick santorum. most people say both of them the conservative he haveevangelical candidate winning, and it was interesting who came in third. we talk about marco rubio coming in just stiefr or six points behind ted cruz, but 14 points ahead of ben carson, who is in fourth place. going forward, there were questi

now, this year, here's ted cruz. these are the latest financial figures disclosed by each of the republican candidates and their respective superpacs. senator ted cruz sitting on $50 million, that's more than mitt romney had in 2012. that's double what any of the other candidates have with the exception of jeb bush. that's it. so, yes, senator cruz is a really, really hard right religious conservative who just won iowa, but he is a different kind of cat than the usual really hard right religious conservatives who just want iowa then they peter out soon thereafter. on the strength of money, alone, and money is not everything, just ask jeb bush, but on the strength of money, alone, it may be fair to expect ted cruz to be a more formidable challenger for the rest of the primary than other iowa winners have been in the recent past. so, yes, common wisdom's told us the winner of iowa won't win the nomination but this time around, buyer beware. joining now is robert costa, national political reporter for the "washington po

ted cruz was first. donald trump finished second, but the real big showing of the night and probably what donald trump is most upset about is that marco rubio finished right on his heels. it was a very strong third place finish for marco rubio. just a short time ago, we heard from both rubio and donald trump. donald trump: we will go on to get the republican nomination and we will go on to easely the hell they throw up there. iowa we love you and thank you. ted cruz: tonight here in iowa, after seven years of barack obama, we are not waiting any longer to take our country back! phil: we are still watching the ted cruz campaign headquarters, people want to hear from ted cruz tonight. he is taking his time coming down to declare the victory. he is the clear winner. on the democratic side, hillary clinton and bernie sanders still entirely too close to call even at this hour in this state, we're talking less than a percentage point right now. remember, there are 1,600 plus precincts in this state, 99 counts.

ted cruz needs it. donald trump is going at ted cruz right there and ted cruz fighting back.ll this out. come back out to the map. why is this so important because if you take a look at this round one in iowa it went to ted cruz. a healthy evangelical population, especially in the caucus environment. south carolina is next. you can tell obviously it's a huge evangelical community, but most of march is down here. the color speaks for itself. this is evangelical bible belt for ted cruz who unlike huckabee and santorum who won iowa he has an organization, he has money. so now you have a essentially he goes at it with trump in south carolina. the question is kasich will come in with a little momentum. can he play here. the bush family now. this was critical to george bush after john mccain beat him. it will be interesting to see jeb bush on the road with his brother, but jeb bush can't afford to come in third or fourth again. he needs a break through moment. so the evangelicals are critical for ted cruz and a slice is important to marco rubio. >> remind our viewers what happened

even the ted cruz was the winner. now ted cruz has come in third in new hampshire.any sense of frustration that he is not getting more credit for that? haley: absolutely. is more like a chip on the shoulder. they never expected given that they believe the media is against them that they would get a lot of attention for a third-place finish. they pointed out that that is kind of unexpected for them. new hampshire is not a state where you would've thought they would've played well. the campaign is feeling confident of where they are going in south carolina. you can probably see heidi crews over my shoulder. being a surrogate for him. ted cruz will be back in this state tomorrow. pushing forward and doing a number of things. talking about their organization. they have just opened a second ted cruz camp to put in additional volunteers. adding to the 9800 total so far. doing twice 5000 phone calls. they are feeling good about the organization. this big wallm is called donald trump that could stop the right in their tracks. after seeing a little bit of a pause on the poli

and nothing that ted cruz said today was new. ing was mind-blowing or headlining, except what is headlining this morning is the fact that cruz has some major issues across the country, but in south carolina. and is losing in most polls. and when you sit there and go through all the points that ted cruz makes about him supporting democrats or that he's pro choice, well, one minor issue. that's not the truth. because mr. trump has supported democrats and republicans, including ted cruz back in 2014 when he contributed, maxed out $5500 to ted cruz's super pac for a senate campaign. it's amazing the details that ted cruz is choosing to point out that are convenient to his story. like i said, there was nothing new in that press conference that he has not tried to sell before. and people are calling out every fact for the falsehood and the truth of everything he said. >> one more reminder for our viewers that at the top of the hour, we're going to get a response to ted cruz from the trump campaign manager. i want to go to phil mattingly

you see for ted cruz? people thought he might come out of south carolina with a trump-cruz two-person race. what does the poll have to say about where ted cruz currently stands, and what he may have to worry about? al: he has to worry primarily by not finishing second. if trump wins and ted cruz is a clear second, i still think he is well-positioned in march 1. if he should finish third or, heaven help them, fourth, that really dilutes whatever strength they put together in the so-called sec primary in march 1. he has to finish a credible second to parlay that into something on march 1. john: let me ask you, last question real quick here, is there anything in this poll to make john kasich happy? al: no, not really. i suppose he could -- there is some hope he could beat jeb bush . but he will be in massachusetts on saturday night. but i don't think the stakes are quite as high because the expectations were not as high. he could finish fifth in south carolina and still go on and then go to michigan and ohio.

and of course, marco rubio, of course, ted cruz has. s awful and he's fired him. >> this is a lot. >> okay. so first to you, matt. you say the cruz campaign may need a reboot. this being one of the reasons. was cruz asking for his spokesman's resignation? was that enough to change the narrative here? >> i think he is trying to make the point that these charges with maybe they've been having some kind of rogue campaign tactics won't be second by the candidate. he has to do something to set the stage and kind of reboot, as i said. i think that's what ted is trying to do and i think this is the right step to try to get that done. >> let's show how marco rubio reacted to the campaign's initial apology. here it is. >> for them to take a video and to transcribe words on it that are the complete opposite of what i said. it is incredibly disturbing. you have to be seeing this, every single day something come out of the cruz campaign that's deceptive and untrue. >> so matt lewis, you defended ted cruz after the campaign and implied that dr. carso

let's go now to ted cruz's campaign co-chair. let me start off here with a very basic question here. did the cruz campaign do something wrong? >> well, i'm a major surrogate for the cruz campaign, especially in iowa and at the awe ka caucuses iowa, i never made a statement about carson getting out of the race. i don't know one voter in iowa who has come out and said i heard this message and so therefore i changed my vote. rush limbaugh is saying that marco rubio's campaign was pushing it. cnn made a report. it is big news when a presidential candidate says i'm not leaving iowa to go to new hampshire and south carolina. i'm going back to florida. cnn did report that. he's been very open to the public. he said, listen, i apologize for not clarifying or having the campaign clarify that he's just making a pit stop in florida. but this has been blown out of proportion because donald trump lost the race. three candidates -- >> hold on one second. before we get to the donald trump part of it -- i know we have a bit of a delay. bob, let m

donald trump almost wants ted cruz to win texas. if donald trump can win everything else, if cruz wins texas, he'll stay in the race. if you're marco rubio, you might want to try to knock ted cruz down some tonight. it's an odd game of pool and chess, but if you're marco rubio, you want cruz to lose texas. so rubio's not going to win texas. so then do you want to -- if you take cruz down -- if you're marco rubio, you actually want donald trump to have a great next tuesday, so that cruz is gone when you get to florida, the tuesday after -- two tuesdays after that. that's the problem for marco rubio. it's, you know, they're all in this game now where they're so far behind, they're trying come up with these fantasy football scores to come back. >> even if cruz does win the state of texas, still the path forward, it doesn't really necessarily change the path forward. >> and that's why if i were trump, i would want trump to win. it's poerproportional. so let cruz win a little bit, and then let him get some delegates, and keep him in the r

you say ted cruz understands part of it. you have endorsed ted cruz.comes in tonight with donald trump and marco rubio criticizing his morality and ethics. >> this guy ted cruz is the single biggest liar i have ever dealt with in my life. i mean it. he will lie about anything. >> he's been lying. if you say something that's not true and you say it over and over again, then there's no other word for it. >> are these attacks having an impact? >> if you say something over and over again, it has an impact. it grew with marco rubio. ted cruz isn't a liar. if there's one person in this race who is telling the truth about washington, d.c. and about what needs to happen and has the intellect to be able to make a difference, it is ted cruz. listen, donald trump gives a whole new meaning to the word bombastic. that's fine. that's entertaining. the fact is we do need to hear the truth and we hear the truth from ted cruz. >> all right. you hear the truth from ted cruz. something changed for you yesterday. charges against you for abuse of power have been dropped. t

[applause] now is the time for texans to stand together. mark: cruz talked about how happy he was back to be in texas, but texas may not be the saving grace that he needs. and you pull out today, cruz and trump are basically tied. it shows ted cruz at 29% and trump at 28%. al, you said before something that not everyone agreed with, but i do want you to talk about it. what is ted cruz's path to victory, and is it good for him if rubio stays in the race, or does he not have the same situation rubio has? al: i think it is a little bit different, although they want to both stay in for a while if you want to be trump. here's the ted cruz path. it is even harder to rubio's. he has to win texas but he can't win it by 29%, 28%. he needs to win big. he's got a win a bunch of those delegates. if you get more than 50% in any congressional district, you get all the delegates.

he's at the ted cruz rally in las vegas. now there are a whole bunch of issues swirling around, what are the people in the crowd talking about? >> reporter: well, they're waiting to hear from senator cruz who is, right now, not in the room yet. he's being, he'll be here shortly, but he is supposed to address the media about this latest controversy over charges of dirty tricks by the rubio campaign, as you said, liz. the cruz campaign distributed a video that was posted by a student newspaper yesterday that it said showed rubio dismissing the bible when he walked into a hotel lobby in south carolina and saw cruz's father and a staffer reading it together. rubio's comments, according to the subtitles of the to video, say that rubio told them, quote: got a good book there, not many answers in it. rubio's campaign tweeted out immediately that the comments were incorrect and that the actual comment was got a good book there, all of the answers are in it. a cruz spokesman apologized for the original posting and subtitle saying that

seemed to get more attention from ted cruz, even though ted cruz had one iowa.done very well in new hampshire. any sense of frustration in ted cruz world that he is not getting credit for that? reporter: absolutely. it is sort of a frustration like a chip on his shoulder. they never expected, given the media is against him, to get a lot of credit for a third-place finish. they feel good. unexpected, given new venture is not a state where they would have played well. it campaign is feeling well is going. you can probably see heidi crews over his shoulder. she is in his place speaking tonight, a surrogate for him. crews will be back in the state tomorrow, pushing for a few new things. they have pulled in the iowa director, a number of iowa staffers. they have opened a second ted cruz camp to put in additional volunteers, adding to the 9000 total. they are doing phone calls, door to door. the big problem in south carolina is donald trump, a good start them right in their tracks. they've seen a little bit of a pause on the policy attack of ted cruz and donald trump

and 32% say ted cruz, the others just in the single digits. one imagines those might be cruz supporters, might be the ones saying that about trump and trump supporters saying that about cruz. >> and maybe that's to their advantage. so far, looks like they're number one and two, at least they were going into this. so, you know, unfair campaigns are sort of the name of the game oftentimes in south carolina. what's interesting, i think, about rubio, he went into this race with all of the marks of the establishment, right? he got nikki haley, he had stim scott down there. he had trey gowdy, joe wilson has come out to support him in the 11th hour. so this was his most sort of establishment showing and kind of image. but yet we'll see how he's able to do. >> well, he will survive to fight another day. the difference between this event and the one we watched earlier today is bernie sanders is going to go on for a few of these contesttants, it's the first day of the rest of their lives. they're going to leave after tonight. jeb bush may be one of them.
