there is always hope in democratic hearts about unseating ted cruz in the senate.us an honest assessment where you think the race is. what is happening with the democratic majority in texas that has not yet come to fruition. texas went from 2012, to barack obama losing it by 16 points to 2020 joe biden losing it to donald trump by 5.5 points. in trump's first midterm, 2018, allred and fletcher took two swing districts in the dfw and houston area in the state house democrats gained 12 seats and two state senate seats and it is basically held constant since then. so, texas very much has been moving to the middle. now, in this race, colin allred is three to four points behind according to the polling but i think he has a legitimate shot. i will tell you why, ted cruz is probably the least likeable statewide politician maybe other than the attorney general paxton. so, i think he is the most vulnerable. and a few years ago republicans did away with straight ticket voting in texas. that means, you know, where you can go in and say no, i am just voting all republican. now

paul: why is ted cruz having such a tough race in texas?d by 4 or 5 points. >> the ted cruz campaign feels they have challenge with can suburban voters some of whom are the women who are unsure about whether they want to vote for somebody so closely affiliated as ted cruz is with donald trump and somehow has to bring them across. my sense is that the election is moving in the direction of the republicans, even in the direction of trump and if that is the case, ted cruz is almost certainly going to pull it across the goal line in texas. it will be close but hard to imagine ted cruz losing that race. paul: let's look at the overall senate. do you think the republicans are pretty well assured of a majority, 51, and could you see as many as 55? how do you handicap it right now? >> they could get 54, 53, they will win west virginia unless a meteor hits that state. they have a good shot to win montana. i would say that race might be over and republicans get it, that's 51. ohio is a good shot for them and put these other races up, pennsylvania, wi

colin allred has raised millions of dollars in this race against ted cruz.of error. it is very close. it's still going to be difficult for allred to overcome what has been a red state for many, many decades. polls show that donald trump at the top of the ticket is leading kamala harris by anywhere between 5 to 7 points. colin allred would have to close that gap and get people to vote for donald trump at the top of the ticket and then vote for him further down ballot, which is a difficult proposition in a presidential election year. still, allred's team believes they have a shot. they're running a coordinated, statewide campaign. it's the first time the texas democrats have been able to do this in a federal race. they believe that allred presents a more moderate offering, a moderate alternative to ted cruz than perhaps some of the other candidates, like beto o'rourke, who ran against ted cruz in 2018. still, this remains a white whale for democrats. the it'll be a surprise if we wake up the day after te the election and allred is the democrat who won the seat

i could never vote for ted cruz.in allred will restore a woman's right to make her own medical decisions. >> so jeremy, we know the impact that this is already having on the presidential race. but will it have an impact on the texas senate race? >> yeah, absolutely it will. look, the senate race was really close the last time around. ted cruz won his re-election last time, but only by 2.6 percentage points in 2018. the problem for him is that we have added over 3 million voters since that time to the voter rolls. that's a lot of independents out there. these messages that are going out now from the colin allred campaign is aimed at trying to get those suburban independents out to vote for him. so he sees the play there to try to get them on his side because they know ted cruz's numbers with independents particularly is really bad right now. and that's his opportunity to kind of seize that middle, and that could have an additional effect on the presidential race as well. >> basil just mentioned gotv, and that is the m
