we begin with ted greenberg live in ship bottom this afternoon. ted? >> reporter: well, jim, lifeguards tell me the surf isn't quite as rough today. but the risk of those dangerous rip currents is actually higher. on this red flag beach day in harvey seed ars, carol mckinney felt the force. >> pretty strong. >> reporter: people here and in other jersey shore communities found swimming restrictions today. no boogie boards and lifeguards kept folks from going in past their knees because of dangerous rip currents fueled by conflicting waves and wind. >> when these two elements collide, the surf coming from the east and the wind coming from the southeast makes rip currents happen a lot easier than they normally would. >> our kids are little. we depend on the lifeguards to keep them safe. so whatever they say, we do. >> reporter: gaston is expected to lessen in the next two days. but tropical storm hermine currently in the gulf of mexico could deliver even rougher and more dangerous conditions over labor day weekend. >> we don't go in after hours, swim near

here's jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg. >> reporter: with her swollen lips stitched up andken teeth, 9-year-old sienna eden doesn't want her face shown on television. >> it was so fast. one second it's off the bat. >> reporter: the next a foul ball hit by phillies shortstop freddy galvas hit her in the face. as they sat behind the dugout. galvas was clearly upset. >> i felt about how sad he probably was to hurt me. and i thought if i were him, i wouldn't be able to sleep at night. >> reporter: less than 24 hours later -- >> my bottom teeth are all chipped here. i have a crack through the top of my front tooth. >> reporter: a foul ball off the bat of a cardinals player hit aaron of eagleswood township. she was in the same part of the stadium with her 6-year-old daughter on her lap. >> i saw it coming right at us. i pushed her out of the way, and i literally felt it come and smack me right in the face. >> reporter: galvas later insistently told the reporters the phillies need to extend the safety netting surrounding the home plate area to further protect fans from foul balls.
