. >> our ted rollins is live at o'hare airport in chicago. d, what does this stalemate mean for people where you are? >> reporter: well, these construction jobs, fredericka, there's 200 projects across the country, a couple of them here at o'hare that have been completely stopped while this impasse continues and while congress is out on their august break. so you're talking about not only hundreds of millions of dollars that aren't being spent and being put into local economies around the country, but you're talking about real problems from people who have lost their jobs, not only the faa workers but these 70,000-plus construction workers who are not going to work and are not getting paid. what we should point out for people who are planning to travel, you see the security line behind me here at o'hare airport, this is not affected and safety is not affected, according to the faa, the people in the air traffic control towers are maid from a different pool of money. so if you're traveling, you don't have to worry about delays or anything else.

. >> alison, i want to go to ted rollins at the chicago mercken tile exchange.ere? >> this is where the securities alison was talking about are bought and sold, and from the outset of the opening here in chicago, people were flocking to u.s. treasury bonds. there was a sense that after the downgrade, oh, no, we're going to have an interest rate hike, and money will cost more for cars and homes and etc. and etc., and that's just simply not happening, as alison said, there's nowhere to park your money. if you don't want to be in the stock market, u.s. treasuries are still the safest way to go. we're seeing that play out here today. analysts think that that will play out in the near future. the only issue is, like alison also mentioned, fanny, freddy and the other agencies tied to the fed, they are seeing a downgrade and you may see that at local levels, too. it could cost the local governments money. the bottom line, though, people are still flocking to the u.s. and spending money buying treasuri treasuries. >> thank you so much for putting this into perspective.
