that was ted rollins reporting for us. and as bad as it's been, conditions should be improving for the many firefighters risking their lives. let's get a forecast of california now. to the world weather center. ivan? >> yeah, errol. in fact, we continue to see improving weather conditions here. remember california and l.a. specifically we were at 100 degrees fahrenheit, upper 30s on thursday. a little better on friday, but not where we should be for this time of year which is about 23. that's where we're going later this afternoon and over the next couple of days. we're dealing with the drought here. this is still going to be an ongoing issue despite the fact that at least weather conditions for the time being will improve. we're going to go from this ridge pattern here where we've had the offshore winds, the santa ana winds bringing gusting conditions, humidity, and high temperatures. now we have a trough that's going to be digging in. that will return the marine layer. we're not going to be talking about rain here, but a

despite calming, reporter ted rollins joins us with the latest. >> good evening, taking a look behind me, this is one of the homes talked about that is completely devastated. more than two dozen homes look like this. firefighters have done an outstanding job here. they have been able to save thousands of homes. that said, escondido has new evacuations and will be all night. firefighters are battling a collection of wildfire that's burned 9,000 acres officials defloiing additional air tankers to the region. 120 sent to people in the county. >> we do have bad air quality. it's not just cars bad event. it's a regional events. so take good care of yourselves. >> there are forcing school closures. >> just terrifying. talking about my dogs and neighbors you know? just families down here. really bad. >> the raging fires are a product of months with little rainfall and above normal temperatures. common theme is that unprecedented number of fires and fire activity across the state. and 2 to 3 months earlier than normal. >> 10,000 acres still burning. firefighters have another long night ahead

ted rollins is standing by live for us in california. officials hoping cooler temperatures and calmer winds will help today. is the weather cooperating? >> it has throughout most of the day but within the last hour the winds have picked up, jake, which is bad news to put wind on those hot spots that are burning every where. because of the fires because of the firefighters efforts most of the fires are under control except for escondido. this is still a major concern. a wall of black smoke and flames were coming towards his house. >> the first flames i saw was a neighbor's tree. >> reporter: thinking he was about to lose his home he was getting ready to leave when firefighters pulled up in three engines. >> they were here. i opened up gates for them. the back gate area to make it easier for them. i said guys save my house if you can. and they did. >> reporter: the home beside him was lost. everyone got out okay. when you consider the wall of flames that consider those mini tornado-like spirals it's amazing more homes were not lost. those

let's begin with cnn ted rollins. he's been working the story for us. he's at the area of the coco fire in san marcos fire. it's doubled in size in the past 24 hours. what's the very latest? >> reporter: well, wolf, the winds have kicked up within the last few hours here which is grave concern for firefighters. they have been attacking this fire all day long. there are 11 fires, there were 11 fires total in southern california, all in san diego county. now it's down to five and three are of concern. this one here, we're in escondido, the san marcos fire and two fires burning in camp pendleton. all three of those are still out of control. this was only 10% here. they had a great day early on attacking from the air. but now the last two hours the within has picked up, this fire has increased in size. we've seen air drops throughout the day. they are trying to gate headway. mother nature should help out in the back end of this into tonight and tomorrow. this is a crucial time here with the winds picking up. >> ted stand by. i want to get right back to. but
