ted rowlands is in washington where this story is unfolding.understand, some of the people at the party are saying a date rape drug caused these overdoses. are police confirming that? >> well, police are confirming, randi, that absolutely somebody laced some liquor with some sort of drug and they believe it's one of the date rape drugs the ghb, something, but they don't have the toxicology back yet so they're hesitant to speculate on what it is. what they do know is that 12 young people between the ages of 18 and 21 were so intoxicated that they had to be hospitalized. as you alluded to, 11 of those victims were girls. they were in a house that police arrived at on friday night. they say they were shocked at what they saw. here is what some of the students at the party said what went on. >> people were having fun and then all of a sudden all the girls were puking everywhere. girls were outside like on their back and people were so drunk they didn't know what to do. >> they were falling down, their drinks were going everywhere andee were just pi

ted rowlands for us in washington where that story is unfolding. thank you, ted.eras keeping an eye on possible storms for today. what are you watching? >> we're watching the southern plains states today. we have an upper level disturbance or an upper level area of low pressure and you can see that swirl here on the map across parts of central nebraska and to go along with it we have a cold front trailing on down and we think things will trigger later this afternoon. at this hour we have showers and thunderstorms. some are heavy. you hear thunder and see lightning. you can see the thunderstorms across parts of kansas and oklahoma. further south of there we think conditions will be more favorable for large hail and damaging winds. can't rule out an isolated tornado but we don't think it will be a big tornado day. this is the area we're concerned with. it does include you in the oklahoma city area so we'll keep you up to date as those storms develop later on this afternoon. as we head into tomorrow, that front will advance toward the east. places like dallas-ft. wor

cnn's ted rowlands is was from los angeles with more.artels, but what is going on now? >> well, wolf, that would make sense if they make it legal then that business gets away are the mexican cartels and reduces the level of violence, but according to a new rand study, that may not be the case. >> reporter: of the estimated 3300 metric tons of pot consumed in the united states each year, as much as two/thirds of it comes from mexico at least from a study released by the rand corporation. but the study concludes that legalizing pot in california would barely impact the drug cartels. >> it is important to realize they have portfolios and not just marijuana, but heroin and methamphetamine, and cocaine and other services and generate revenue from a lot of sources, and exporting marijuana to california is only one of them. >> reporter: the study concludes that drug cartels would lose 2% to 4% of the export revenue if pot were legal in california, because californians grow so much of their own. legalizing pot say opponents won't hurt the cartel
