now, on the scene former homicide detective criminal defense attorney, and fox news contributor ted williamsu've been on the ground for us. what can you tell us tonight? >> lawrence i can tell you that it's like an emotional roller coaster here. emotions are very highs -- this is a small close knit college community, and everywhere i've gone today, i've seen women weeping, one woman told me these are not my children. but i love them like they were my children. and wanted to embrace them. as we throughout the day we've had law enforcement coming and going at the over my shoulder here. now flawrns i could let me just take you back to sunday morning about 1:45. at that time, all four victims are back in this house. now two entrances to this home, one through that front door that has a coated lock. we've learned that at times that coded lock would be left off because a lot of people would come to this location for parties. and then there's a sliding back door. and lawns there were two individuals in this home that was left untouched. somebody, the next day around nine hours after this incident w

joining us now criminal defense attorney former homicide detective fox news contributor ted williams.m glad you are in idaho, you had a question at press conference, i want our viewers to hear the question and answer. >> can you share with us why you believe they were targeted killings and do you know who if any of the victims were the actual targets? >> we believe they were targeted. because we take a totality of circumstances we're looking at. do we know any one person that was targeted. we're not able to say at-this-point in time due to our investigation. trey: ted, do they have a motive or do they have a list of suspects or just still kind of in the evidence gathering stage? >> you know, i think they are still in the evidence gathering stage. the reasons that i asked that question about the targeting since they put it out there, i think we all want to know what was the motive. so if you could clearly show us that there was information saying there was a target, then the question is, who was the target. this is in. information that the public wants to know. but i respect the fact.

homicide detective ted williams is live in moscow, idaho. you asked the question about the targeted killings. in the "new york times." the attack appeared to have been targeted. you asked the right question. the answer was somewhat not evasive but i would elusive. what did you learn from that? >> i thought the answer was rather vague, to be direct. i anticipated that they would have given us more about what they believe was a targeted killing because quite naturally we would have wanted to know who was actually the target? that has become significant because what you are trying to try to determine is what was the motive in this case? and that is certainly something that is -- we do not know at this stage. we do know that a large knife was used. we do know that at this crime scene here that two of the individuals were on the second floor and two of the individuals were on the third floor. but there are so many questions that have been left unanswered and i think that it has left the community here feeling very, very insecure. >> in fact, the

ted williams, a foreman d.c. homicide detective -- former d.c.ctive and fox news contributor joins us now. ted, investigators are ruling out a connection to those other stabbings. still, many unanswered questions. as a former homicide detective yourself, what did you glean when you were on the ground there, and what do you still want to know at this point? >> well, good afternoon, arthel. i can tell you law enforcement has a tremendous job to do there in moscow, idaho. on the scene you see it full in front of you that this house, house where the killer entered that primarily you want to determine where did he enter, through the front door or through one of the sliding glass doors on the second floor? i believe that he possibly or she, the perpetrator, came through that slide aring back door. my reason being is that the first floor is where the two surviving students would have stayed, lived. so if he came through the sliding glass door on the back side of the house, you're automatically on the second floor. bodies were found on the second and thi

police detective ted the williams also in moscow, idaho. he's joining us now, attorney and fox news contributor. ted, or what are you learning on the ground and your thoughts when you first arrived and saw the house and the surroundings? >> well, good afternoon, arthel. in the last few hours, family members have been here to what we define as the crime scene, and they passed out a flier, and her going door to door with this flier -- they are going door to door trying to seek help from the members of the community. now, when you look over my shoulder here, you see the home where these four victims died. this in and of itself is a crime scene. and so when you look at it, let me describe the first floor there -- well, the top floor, should i say. already two bedrooms up there. one bedroom you have an m. it can very well have been maddie's bedroom. we don't really know that. but down below is a second bedroom. and there is where, from what we've been told, some of the victims were either this third the floor bedroom or the second floor. but as w

fox news contributor ted williams is live on the ground outside the house where those four students were idaho. ted, good afternoon to you. >> good afternoon, trace. >> trace: i'm wondering if you can give us an idea. a lot of times -- i'm curious about the house behind you, the layout of it. there's been a lot of talk about the layout. three levels. who was on what level and why two of those roommates in the house were left unharmed. what to you make of that, ted? >> okay. trace, the crime scene that is over my shoulder, that home, is frozen in time. the first level, there were two surviving students on that level. the second level of the home, there were two students found dead. on the third level of this home, there were two students found dead. the medical examiner has come to the scene. the medical examiner has said that this scene, there was blood all over the place. so as a result of that, it is believable that there would have been blood all over the perpetrator or perpetrators. and as a result of that, you'd have to believe that they should be closer to maybe finding out who too

police detective ted williams joins us from moscow, defense attorney and fox news contributor.nytime you have stabbings, it's considered almost certainly a crime of passion many the murderer probably knew the victim or victims here. does that fit the pattern in this crime? >> i believe it does fit the pattern. it's no doubt the medical examiner who arrived on the scene said there was a great deal of blood. if there was a great deal of blood, that means the killer or killers have direct physical contact with the various vic victims. as a result, they should have a great deal of physical evidence they can work with in this case meaning authorities. i'm sure they are processing the evidence. jon: the police aren't saying much about the investigation which you have to applaud because it means whatever information they get is not going to be compromised and should be usable in court but also a lot of people are scared because they feel like the police don't have anything. how do you walk that line? >> it is a very fine line to walk. law enforcement clearly knows a great deal more th

if there was targeted d.n.a., as ted williams expressed.were there were not harmed. >> todd: in your experience, are police releasing so little information because they don't want to tip off the killer or killers that they are getting close to finding them or do they not have answers to questions we're raising on our show and other shows? >> very good question from you. traditionally, police don't like to release information or alert bad guys to what they know and don't know. the problem is that there is group sourcing what is going on, an awful lot of information are coming from people watching the show and see things or people who know some of the decedents or the parents, a lot of different sources coming out for information, one thing the press conference yesterday gave very little, but some information is not valid. in general, the police like to hold on to things, although one sees a week later, tire marks, there is concern, tire marks change in a week, weather conditions. also they came out with that other people were there before th

let's go to former fbi investigator and ted williams, former defense attorney.und interesting, there's a variety of charges that depape faces right now. among them attempted homicide, first degree burglarly, assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse. there's separate federal charges involved here for attempted kidnapping, assault with attempt to recallate against a federal official by threatening or injuring a family members. those are the ones that carry a sentence up to 50 years in prison. i'm told the federal charges are the reasons he is still in a county jail. that otherwise, if it was local ordinance, he would be out on bail or just out period. am i right? is that right? >> well, i think you're certainly accurate under california law, that he very well could be out based upon the state charges. but the attempted kidnapping is the charge that certainly i think is going to keep him in jail for some time to come. i will say he's lucky to be alive. when he raise that hammer, he could have been blasted to smithereens. >> neil: bill daily, what do you make ab

william: i1995, the pennsylvania legislature passed a law that directed prosecutors to directly file charges against young people 15 and over in adult court, if they commit tedlonies, especially if they're repeat offenders or used a deadly weapon. malik: pennsylvania was was not unique in this matter. there were a litany of states that were kind of enacting a lot of similar policies. there has recently been a movement to kind of draw back some of those policies and to recognize that youth are developmentally distinct from from adults. sen. bartolotta: you're not allowed to vote until you're 18. you can't drink until you're 21, but a young person who commits crimes they should have known better. william: republican state senator camera bartolotta co-chairs the criminal justice reform caucus in the pennsylvania legislature. in may, she introduced a bill that would end direct file in the state. sen. bartolotta: one of the worst things that happens when anyone has been incarcerated, especially a young person they , will face an uphill battle for years and years to come. william: ending direct file was one of more than 30 recommendations made by a bipartisan juve
