"today in the bay's" marla tellez with a case making its way through the u.s. sdrikt court in san francisco. nothing short of a disturbing situation. >> good morning. the arrest of these two guys not only freed a 15-year-old girl but also broke up a large drug operation that federal agents say funneled significant amounts of marijuana into northern california. officials say 30 yoord ryan balletto and 24-year-old patrick pearman raped a girl and held her captive. the criminal complaint filed in san francisco says balletto kidnapped the teen in los angeles, brought her to his clearlake home where the two men would look her in a four foot by two foot by two foot metal box. investigators say the girl would live in the box for up to three days at a time and breathe through air holes drilled in the box. our nbc station in sacramento spoke to locals in lake county who aren't necessarily shocked by the marijuana grow, but the other details, well, that's a different story. >> pot is one thing, but sexual abuse is very bad, obviously. that's absolutely wrong. >>> the u.s

marla tellez live at west oakland b.a.r.t. station. last time we checked in with you one person was in line waiting for a ride. any more commuters now? >> reporter: yes, within the last 60 seconds, the first chartered bus for san francisco left and there were 25 people on that bus. now there are no commuters in line and there's about eight buses i think i've counted out here waiting for commuters to arrive. i talked to a person who worked with b.a.r.t. and tell me that 51 people have left the el cerrito station, still under 100 commuters, still early on wednesday morning commute. west oakland hub is the hub for this chartered bus service. if you can't make it here directly you can go to one of four other east bay stations and then take a bus here and then take noon san francisco. that's how it works. those stations are fremont, el cerrito, walnut creek and dublin/pleasanton. now yesterday, though, the buss of service hit a serious sflag. so many commuters that the service from the stations stopped running more than an hour early. suppo

i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. police spent most of the night at this home on wilson avenue just across from interstate 580, from fruitvale elementary school. today in the bay's christie smith is outside children's hospital in oakland where the two other children are being treated. she joins us now on the phone. christie, at this point what have you learned? >> reporter: good morning. i can tell you we're outside of children's hospital in oakland where we aren't seeing much activity in terms of family members coming and going, but what a horrible story. a grandmother and three young children shot, as you said, one of them has died. oakland police are telling us they got a call of shots fired activation around is 1:15. that's the system that alerts them of gunfire. they also got neighborhood calls of gunfire in the 3400 block of wilson avenue. that's the lower diamond neighborhood. police say when they arrived they found a grandmother and two 7-year-old girls shot, also a 4-year-old boy was hit. all of the children

marla tellez live with where more than a dozen of the rapes happened. this happened more than 25 years ago. >> reporter: good morning. back in the late '70s, early '80 that's christopher evans hubbart terrorized women in the bay area. people as you forgotten raped most of the victims here in sunnyvale and also women in san jose and san francisco. hubbart was known as the pillowcase rapist because he'd put a pillowcase over his victims' head. prior to go on his raping spree here in sunnyvale, people didn't realize he raped 25 other women in the los angeles area. that was in the early to mid-70s. he was arrested and locked up only to be released in 1990, and that's when he struck again. this time he attacked a woman at monroe middle school in san jose. since then he spent most of his time in state hospitals. his fate is set to change after a santa clara county judge granted him conditional release in may which mean his could be a free man sometime this year. that horrifies people here in sunnyvale especially who will never forget him. >> i remember when h

exactly what happened to a couple of guys not too far from the bay area. >> to dma the bay's marla tellez the action all caught on tamara. >> one of these drivers happened to be rolling as two buddies almost ended up in the belly of a humpback. not a good place to be. this happened at pismo beach about 2 1/2 miles offshore. here is a map to give you a little perspective. i want you to meet sean stamback. he says he and his diver friends set out to see if they could hear the whales sing. they didn't hear any music, but definitely got more than they bargained for. you can see sean and another guy in the water there. out of nowhere, here comes the two giant humpback whales, mouths wide open within feet of them. we'll show you again in slow motion to give you a better look of it. sean says he was right above one of the whale's tail and thought for sure he was going to get whacked or even worse considering the sheer size of the massive mammals. >> you see pictures, representations of how big a humpback whale is compared to a bus, to a jet. when you see one in person that close, they are giant.

marla tellez has the day off. >>> the hunt is on right now for vandals in the east bay this morning.olice believe they literally hit a radio tower, knocking it right on its side. nbc bay area's christie smith joining us live in castro valley with exactly how long this will likely take to get the tower back up and running. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. east bay regional park police are asking for the public's help this morning in finding whoever did this. it looks like someone had vandalized the guy wires, possibly cut them right off and the tower toppled right over t isn't small. we are talking 75 feet tall near the danville, san ramon border. it was damaged overnight monday, according to east bay regional park police. it's used to transmit a variety of signals, including those for emergencies, rocky ridge at loss trampos park and along a very steep trail that's at least 20 minutes to get to from the nearest road by foot. access sent easy, protected by multiple gates. why someone would know this, we don't know. public safety communication wasn't compromise

"today in the bay's" marla tellez joins us live in the newsroom with new details on the investigationura? >> reporter: that runway reopened less than two hours ago just before 5:00 a.m. our time. we have new video of the southwest plane slowly being hauled away to a hangar at laguardia very early this morning. laguardia closed for more than an hour yesterday. the plane spending the night on that runway where it made that hard landing yesterday afternoon. this exclusive video shows ther sparks and all as the nose gear fails as flight 345 attempted to make a smooth landing. that, of course, didn't happen. instead, the front end of that jet came crashing down. about 150 people were on board that plane that originated in nashville. officials say ten people were treated at the scene. another six were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. the faa and now the ntsb are investigating here in the bay area. we're very familiar with the ntsb after the deadly asiana airlines plane crash at sfo. that was just 17 days ago. the latest story out of new york hitting very close to home. laura an

"today in the bay's" marla tellez live in newsroom.ue crews say it's possible the death toll could go higher. >> we have a lot of new information coming into our newsroom. first off, the u.s. embassy in madrid confirms at least five americans are among the injured, the extent of their injuries is not known yet. what we've just learned is of the 141 people who are hurt, 36 are in critical condition, four of them are children. within the past couple hours, the security cam video was released showing the crash itself as the train tries to pass underneath an overpass and around the bend. spanish officials confirmed the speed limit in this area is 50 miles per hour. at least two spanish media outlets are reporting the train was traveling closer to 120 miles per hour, so more than twice the limit. all this information will be vital as investigators work to determine an exact cause. here is a look at the map. the train left madrid bound for the city of ferrol in northwestern region, crashed about 60 miles shy on the eve of a major religious c

marla tellez joins us in our newsroom with new details and new video just in. it's just devastating. >> it is scary to watch. i just spoke with an official with the ventura county fire department and he tells me the scene has been cleared but investigators will be back out at this community park in just a couple of hours where this all happened just outside of los angeles. now, this whole thing was caught on camera, including the very moment disaster struck. take a listen. >> oh! oh! oh, my god! oh, oh! run! run! run, run, run! run. >> reporter: you can hear the man here frantically telling people to run. this happened just before 9:30 in simi valley at an annual fireworks show. home video showing just a few minutes into the show the fireworks began exploding on the ground and into the crowd. the launcher that sends these fireworks into the sky actually tipped over. 28 people in all are hurt, 20 were rushed to the hospital. most with mild to moderate injuries, but ventura county fire says four people are recovering from severe injuries. none, however, said to b

marla tellez is joining us from our newsroom. marla, everyone wondering why did they launch sideways instead of up in the air. >> reporter: investigators say they don't know why one of the launching stations tipped over, but it most certainly did. they say foul play is not suspected. they're calling this one an industrial accident. if you haven't seen this complete home video yet, here it is. just a few minutes into the show when everything goes terribly wrong. >> oh! oh! oh, my god! oh, oh! run! run, run! >> reporter: no matter how many times you see this, it still scares you. the fireworks started to shoot into the crowd of some 10,000 people. this happened about 9:20 last night at the rotary club's fireworks show in simi valley, which is about 40 miles northwest of los angeles. in all 28 people are hurt, most with mild injuries. ventura county fire says four people are severely hurt. their injuries consistent with shrapnel and projectile-type injuries. one woman says she's just so grateful she and her young son were not sittin

. >> tellez with that is? >> that would be a fire sprinkler pipe. >> we have a bunch of different types. this is fire sprinkler pipe. they hang this from the ceiling somehow, run the fire sprinkler line through here. about all the inserts and all the fittings, there is a lot of pre planning and coordination. you cannot drill into the slab. all the guys are up there nailing inserts from the top on the layout, all the walls laid out. there is a threaded insert ready for this. >> they did not go below and drill a hole. >> no, you see the spray painted lines? they basically give as a guideline so we know where the tendons are. >> all this is figured out before you pour the slab. then the wall is going out. the walls are, what are the call? what is this made of? >> they are framed with light gauge steel studs, which are typically 25 gauge. on this project, because it is a high-rise, they tend to be heavier due to the acceleration forces on the upper floors. typically one, too, or more layers of drywall over that. >

. >> good morning, i'm marla tell tellez. >>> a police car on the pen nen sill la is brewing a popular debate in our country right now, privacy versus security. while lawmakers are figuring out whether the government can tap your phones, palo alto police have a new piece of equipment raising similar privacy concerns. nbc bay area's bob redell is live in palo alto with a look at the patrol car that can automatically read your license plate. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla not only read your license plate but store the information on where and when your car was spotted. hence, the privacy concerns. on tuesday the palo alto police department joined the list of at least 30 other bay area law enforcement agencies who now use this automatic license plate reader, which in palo alto's case is four cameras mounted on top of just one patrol car. as that car drives around town, those cameras scan and read every license plate within roughly 30 feet and alerts the officer if hearn has come across a stolen vehicle or a car, lemon say, registered to someone with an outstanding war
