that happened early in the morning on the southbound tide of tennant avenue. that's where we find christie smith. >> reporter: we, officials have been out here all morning because of some of the gasoline spilled. we finally have two of the three lanes open. what they're delling us is the third lane will stay closed for quite some time because they're dealing with all of that gas that leaked out. you can still smell it out here this morning. they have to do remediation and remove it after a tanger carrying 8500 gallons of gasoline turned over. for a time it shut down all southbound lane. first we heard that 4000 galloned filled and now we're hearing it's closer to 1700. a 23-year-old man was traveling too fast and lost control. it ran into a gas tanker that lost control and rolled off of the shoulder. 1700 galloned spilled. some of it went into the dirt and some went to the a storm drain. >> we're looking for sheen, impacts to wildlife. if there is any endangers wildli -- endangered wi endangered wildlife we want to take care of it. >> have you seen any? >> no.

if you were to get behind that and behind the chief so that the tennants can form building safety committees without fear of retaliation from unscrupulous landlords, it would be extremely helpful. people want to be safe including those who are in the criminal element. i have said before, when the criminal element start to feel unsafe, the rest of us don't stand a chance. they need to know the crime, because they have crimes perpetrated against them. what they can do to get that crime reported. because a lot of these people don't live in the best shelters, they don't live in door ways. they live in so-called supportive housing, public housing. they need to know, we need to know what can be done. so if there is someway that the commission can come up with something to help us out that would be really really wonderful if you can agendaized, i don't like the word hearing. but agendaized and open sort of thing so people from the public can come and share with you what sorts of things we like to see happen. that would be very very helpful and would help make san francisco even more responsive and

i still take care of my tennants. thank you for your time. >> my name is elisa. i live on hill street across from 1050 valencia. our single most important goal over the past 5 years is to get this development to respect the community. this very small project situated primarily on hill street has attracted a great deal of attention quite out of proportion to its size. there have been many voices to added opinions and applied pressure to this board. both the historic preservation commission and planning commission voiced the need to scale down this building. the coalition of san francisco neighborhoods, a citywide eight neighborhood organizations joins us tonight to urge the commissioners to keep this building at four floors. this historic part of the mission is special and we want to preserve it. this building diminishes neighborhood character. it is incompatible with the historic architecture and now will add more unaffordable condos to a community that is already reeling from this type of development. over 800 condos are being built within 3 blocks of this site.
