so indra petersons is in memphis, tennessee.t's a hard impact area right now as the storm continues to move. she's tracking it from there. indra, what do you see? >> it looks like it will be a tough weekend as two systems move through the same region, impacting them with catastrophic ice storms. memphis, temperatures above freezing. the line of storms has not moved in the area just yet. take a look at the radar. that's not been the case overnight as this ice storm started to make its way across the country. we've seen reports of ice from indiana stretching back even in through texas. farther to north around indiana and southern illinois they've seen about a quarter inch of ice. it's just around arkansas and tennessee where we're seeing some of the bigger impacts, seeing over an inch of ice already reported. so let's talk about this. there is an ice index, the national weather service, this is the first year they're doing it. right here in memphis, they are talking about this being a category 3. that means we could see power pote

a prison for women in tennessee now helping inmates use that time to earn their college degree.onathan martin reports. >> reporter: donna mccoy is serving a life sentence for first degree murder. for just a few hours she is able to swap her prison uniform for a cap and gown. >> i feel like i'm being redeemed. i'm being restored. >> reporter: it was the first graduation at the tennessee prison for women. eight inmates received associates degrees in in liberal arts. every wednesday night for the past seven years, professors have come here into the prison. teaching these women everything from history to physics. >> the classes were easy, so i felt like i really earned a degree. >> we were never looked down on as inmates. we were always considered students. >> reporter: each women had to earn 63 credit hours. >> there have been a lot of voices in their life that tell them that they don't matter and they don't count. and now they can illustrate that they are somebody, they can work hard and achieve success, and model that to their families, to their children, and to the larger societ

she drew the short straw and live in memphis, tennessee, this morning.ow do things look there, indra? >> right now, things are pretty mild. it's that calm before the storm but a few hours away, everything could change here in memphis. the national weather service with its new experimental, the first year we have an ice impact index. is calling the potential here in memphis to be a category 3. what does that mean? potential of over half an inch of freezing rain. you get that ice there, half an inch of ice on the power lines we talked about power outages could last as long as five days. let's take a look at the satellite. the radar show you where this system is. it's already done a ton of damage overnight. look at this. you see those dots, those are the storm reports. we have already seen freezing rain in these overnight hours so anywhere from indiana stretching back in through texas we have seen the system or this line move on through. farther to the north around southern illinois, we have only seen about a third of an inch of that ice accumulation. north

cold air is, you combine these two, that is where we pick up severe weather, making its way into tennessee and also portions of kentucky, tornadoes are spawned from this band of rain. from behind it we have not only heavy snow reported from kansas city, but the pink on the map there is very heavy ice iing, moving into the chicago area overnight tonight, and into tomorrow. so not only will we have flight delays in many of the new england areas, we'll also have delays on a lot of the holiday packages to be delivered, as well. good news is, a fast moving storm moving out of here in the next day. we'll look at the forecast coming up. >>> a deal is reached between bart and its two largest employee unions over a disputed clause that the agency says was signed by mistake. the agreement dropped the family leave clause that granted union members up to six weeks of paid leave. employees will instead get three weeks of bereavement. the deal means the strike is over, they will send the revised contract to their members for a vote. >>> new at 11:00, retailers are trying to attract the last-minute shopp

the big story is the ice storm and the people that are in arkansas and tennessee, they're losing powert this hour because of the tree limbs falling down. the storm yesterday rolled into oklahoma towards the tail end of the rush hour and it caused its trouble there. we had a lot of snow, we had a little sleet and then snowed on top of it. nothing worse than getting a little ice and snow on top. look at the map here, these are our warnings and watches and advisories. we have the big ice storm and snow from oklahoma city to dallas all the way up into areas of western new york. we had dangerous windchills all through the northern plains and a new winter storm that's going to move into california today which that one by the way could even bring snow to areas like philadelphia, d.c., new york, and washington, d.c. on sunday. not a significant event, but still, that's the next one in the wings. as far as the worst right now, overnight the icing has been really bad in arkansas and it tennessee where the trees are coming down this hour, roads closed, schools closed. snow in southern portions of
